Latent flaw in SEXPREC definition

Calling C++ from R
Hi All, I am new to this area and use Rcpp to call C++ from R and try to build the package under Windows 7. I use Rtools and R 2.10.1 32bit. Setting up a windows system for rcpp
I am running into a wall getting my system to work with rcpp and inline. Following Dirk's advice on stackoverflow, I hope someone is able to help me. Any idea why CHAR(asChar(STRING_ELT( produces NA whereas CHAR(STRING_ELT( gets a pointer to a string? It's generally expected that STRING_ELT should already be a character, but why the coercion does not work? CentOS 5: comment swap in fstab
I'm not sure what gave me this idea, but I decided to comment out the swap partition in /etc/fstab and reboot my laptop. I did not run swapoff directly at any time. I'm running more things now than I would ever dream of to hammer my 500MB of memory, but I still notice NO slowdown. This is the best desktop experience I've ever had for any OS on any hardware! Crash in the latest release
I found this by accident yesterday. The program that crashes is the first two lines of the example from the help page for nlmer. That example hasn't changed in a long time, so I assumed that it is an R-devel issue. It could also be a long latent nlmer bug. The second run with valgrind is puzzling. Basic Question regarding PROTECT
Hello, Suppose I have the function SEXP foo(){ SEXP s; PROTECT(s=allocVector(...)) .... UNPROTECT(1); return(s) } y=foo() // foo is a recusrive call Q: Am i correct in understanding that one does not need to write PROTECT(y=foo()) ?(and a corresponding unprotect later on) since it is the object that is protected , SEXP is an alias for SEXPREC* and allocVector probably does some memory
