LMS estimation for lmsqreg package
Hello, I'm trying to create birth centile charts from about 90000 birth weights using the package lmsqreg. As this is not a CRAN package I have problems finding any examples, which explain how to estimate the LMS parameters needed for the equivalent degrees of freedom. (I only have some basic understanding of statistics, I roughly understand the formulas, but then I don't know how to

LC_TIME not set correctly by Sys.setlocale() ?
Related to the following question on Stackoverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44723690/unexpected-behavior-of-sys-setlocale#44723690 It appears as if Sys.setlocale() does not update LC_TIME correctly for use in date formatting. Although R reports that LC_TIME is changed to the new setting after use of Sys.setlocale(), as.Date() still uses the old settings. The only way to update this is

error calling Winbugs using R2WinBugs to run a multi-level model
Dear all, I'm calling Winbugs (1.4.3) through R2WinBugs (2.1-18 coda_0.14-7) to fit a switching random walk model, but come up with an instant trap with the log only displaying 'check('. I will paste the trap with session info below; I'd be very grateful for any ideas. Couple of leads: 1. I presume the problem relates to the r package itself or the way I call bugs(), because I

Running R at a specific time - alternative to Sys.sleep() ?
Dear R-Help, Is it possible to set R up to run a particular script at specific times of the day? trivial example: If the time is now 8:59:55am and I wish to run a function at 9am, I do the following: my.function <- function(x) { p1 <- proc.time() Sys.sleep(x) print('Hello R-Help!') proc.time() - p1 } my.function (5) [1] "Hello R-Help!" user system

a^b when a is large and b < 1 (64bit R on windows 7)
Hi, I'm getting some strange behaviour when trying to use the power operator (a^b) when a is large and b is less than one: big <- .Machine$double.xmax big big^0.5 sqrt(big) > big <- 1.797693134862315708384e+308 > big^0.5 [1] Inf > sqrt(big) [1] 1.340781e+154 I'm guessing that this behaviour is not expected, or am I missing something about ^? identify.hclust() doesn't cut tree at the vertical position of the mouse pointer
Dear All According to the identify.hclust documentation the function "cuts the tree at the vertical position of the pointer and highlights the cluster containing the horizontal position of the pointer". When I carry out this, the tree isn't cut where I click - in fact, there seems to be a limit below which I cannot go. Consider the following code: mat <- matrix(rnorm(5000),

CRAN task views work only once per session (PR#9330)
Cran task views seems to be a "once-per-session" process -- the first attempt to access views in a (RGui for Windows) session works, but subsequent attempts fail. There is a noticeably long pause before the failing call returns. Example session with two calls to "available.views" follows, but similar effects have been observed with two calls to "install.views" and

unable to get "R CMD" to work as expected on a 64 bit windows machine
Hi, I've just downloaded and installed R 2.14.0 using the windows binary on a 64bit windows machine running windows 7. Rterm / RGui work as expected, as does R CMD --help and R CMD BATCH --help however R CMD check --help returns no information and I seem to be unable to check a package. Various other options also seem to not be working as expected, i.e. R CMD REMOVE aa (where aa is

sqlFetch (RODBC) question
Dear all, I've used RODBC a lot to read in files created in MS excel and access but found a strange problem today: a variable in my data file contained both numbers and text; sqlFetch would set text within a row of numbers to NA; but if first 5 or 6 rows would be text then all numbers would be read in as NA. con<-odbcConnectExcel("xample.xls") #the file is attached or at

Identify does sort the locations
Hi, Using identify function, I think I should get the index of the selected points in the order I clicked them. This is what I read in the help. But I feel they are ordered. Please let me know what I missed. In the following example, I clicked on the points labelled 7, 5 and 1, but I get 1, 5, 7 as output. > set.seed(0); x = rnorm(10); y = rnorm(10); plot(x,y); text(x, y, > seq(x));

"strange" behaviour: recognition of decimal numbers by 'which'
It is a strange behaviour in that I did not expect it... but I am sure there is a simple explanation for it and it'll have to do with the way numbers are stored in R, but it's caught me by surprise and I don't find it obvious. Here's a simplified example reproducing the behaviour I encountered: I create an empty vector, and I fill it with a sequence of numbers: 0, 0.005,

How should a SelfStart function handle illegal parameter values?
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to write selfStart non-linear models for use with nls. In these models some combinations of parameter values are illegal; the function value is undefined. That's OK when calling the function directly [e.g. SSmodel(x, pars...)]; I return an appropriate non-value such as NA or Inf. However, when called from nls [e.g. nls(y~SSmodel(x, pars...), ...)] those

Memory in R on windows running 64bit XP
Hi I'm running 32-bit R on Windows XP 64bit and the machine has 16Gb of RAM. The help for memory.limit states: If 32-bit R is run on some 64-bit versions of Windows the maximum value of obtainable memory is just under 4GB. So, using the help which states the size parameter can go up to 4095: memory.limit(size=4095) When I run mclust I get: Error: cannot allocate vector of size 1.3 Gb So,
