boxplot() confuses x- and y-axes (PR#10345)
Full_Name: Bob O'Hara
Version: 2.6.0
OS: Windows XP
Submission from: (NULL) (88.112.20.250)
Using horizontal=TRUE with boxplot() confuses it as to what is an x- or y-axis.
At least, xlim= and ylim= are the wrong way round, log="x" (or "y") and xaxt=
work as expected, I haven't looked at anything else.
Some code to see if you can reproduce the bug (or discover

error : unused argument(s) when boxplot
Dear all,
I am a total beginner in R, so sorry if this is the wrong place. I am using R 2.10.1 on a Mac (Mac OS 10.6.2).
I have this small dataset :
growth sugar
75 C
72 C
73 C
61 F
67 F
64 F
62 S
63 S
I have no problem reading the table, or getting the summary, but if I try boxplot(growth~sugar, ylab="growth", xlab="sugar", data=Dataset), I have the following error :

Line over Boxplot
Very much a rookie at R, and have only recently started using it again so
pardon the simple question. I am trying to produce a box plot from one data
set and then overlay a line plot from another data set. The box plot data
set is made up of 20 sets of 30 data points, or 600 total data points. The
line has only 30 total data points. The box plot is plotting fine, but for
some reason, the line plot

asp=1 and aspect ratio
Hi everyone
I want a square scatterplot with abline(0,1) going exactly through the
SW and NE corners. By "square" I mean that the plotting region is
exactly square, and that the axis limits are identical.
x <- 1:20
y <- x+rep(c(-1,1),10)
lims <- range(c(x,y))
None of the following do this:
plot(x,y) ; abline(0,1) #not square
plot(x,y,asp=1);abline(0,1) #diagonal

need help with axis ticks
hi,
i am using par(mrow=c(6,6)) function to get 6x6 plots on one screen. the
problem that i am having is that the axis tick labels are far away from the
ticks and going into previous plots (see attached figure). i need to know
how can i reduce the distance between the ticks and their values (y axis
values).the part of the code that i am using (after reading in the data) to
create the top row is:

Small inconsistency with boxplot
Dear R-core team,
I think I found a small inconsistency in the boxplot function. I don't want to post it as a bug since I'm not sure this might be considered as one according to the FAQ --- and this is not a major problem. Don't hesitate to tell me if I'm wrong.
If you try to do a boxplot on a matrix and set the "at" argument to some vector different from 1:n, n is the

I would like to distinguish my plots using colors but I got error message. How do I correct that?

parameter yaxs / function hist (graphics)
Dear R users,
The parameters xaxs and yaxs (function par, package graphics)
seem not to work with the function hist (package graphics),
even when the parameters xlim and ylim are defined.
Is there any way to make yaxs="i" and xaxs="i" work properly
with the function hist, mainly to produce histograms that
"touch" the horizontal axis? The R documentation and the

Boxplot issues
Boxplot and bxp seem to have changed behaviour a bit of late (R 2.4.1). Or maybe I am mis-remembering.
An annoying feature is that while at=3:6 will work, there is no way of overriding the default xlim of 0.5 to n+0.5. That prevents plotting boxes on, for example, interval scales - a useful thing to do at times. I really can see no good reason for bxp to hard-core the xlim=c(0.5, n+0.5) in the

setting xlim and ylim with asp=1
In plot(), when using option asp=1 the xlim and ylim have no effect because
they are changed
changed in order to fill the whole plot region. Is there a way to
automatically set
xlim and ylim when asp has been set to 1?
For example:
#This is a box of the plot ranges I want:
boxxy=rbind(c(-1,2),c(-1,-1),c(1,-1),c(1,2),c(-1,2))
#Without asp=1 I get what I want (i.e. I can't see the box because it

adding a curve with xaxs="i"
I want the curve to touch the y axis like the curve touches the upper boundary.
How can I eliminate the margin between axis and curve on the left side?

x2 <- c(2,4,6,8,10)
mod <- lm (x2~x1)
hm <- function (x) (mod$coe[1]+x*mod$coe[2])

scatterplot3d: fractionary xrange
Dear all,
I'm plotting this and I need x range = (-2.5, 2.5).
require(scatterplot3d)
scatterplot3d(1,1,1, pch=19, xlim=c(-2.5, 2.5), zlim=c(0,2),
ylim=c(0,3), xaxs="i", yaxs="i")
In any case, it seems that in the drawing range for x is (-3,3).
I guessed I could have this kind of behaviour for ranges:
plot(1,1, pch=19, xlim=c(-2.5, 2.5), ylim=c(0,3),

overlap cdf plots and add colors and etc
Hi r-users,
I would like to overlap 2 ecdf plots.
I tried this below and it gives me two plots of ecdf but just both just in
black.
par(mar=c(4,4,2,1.2),oma=c(0,0,0,0),xaxs="i", yaxs="i")
plot(ecdf(datobs))
lines(ecdf(gam_sum_gen))
Then I try to add colors etc and also the legend but fail.
par(mar=c(4,4,2,1.2),oma=c(0,0,0,0),xaxs="i", yaxs="i")

moving text labels in plot
Hi R users
I need to specify some parameter input in plot code to move Y text label to
left.
plot(temp, develo_rate, xlab = expression(paste("Temperature (C"^o,")")),
ylab = expression(paste("Development rate (d"^-1,")")),las=1,pch=19,
xlim=c(0,32),ylim=c(0,0.03),xaxs = "i", yaxs = "i")
Plot result is added.
any help?

overplots - fixing scientific vs normal notation in output
Moving from S-plus to R I encountered many great features and a much
more stable system.
Currently, I am left with 2 problems that are handled differently:
1) I did lots of "overplots" in S-Plus using
par(new=T,xaxs='d',yaxs='d') to fix the axes
->What is the workaround in R ?
2) In S-Plus I could fix "scientific notation" or "normal notation" in

Changing x-axis on boxplot
Dear List,
?
I am creating a boxplot with two subsets, very similar to the example by Roger
Bivand at ?boxplot (reproduced below).? I am trying to change the labels on the
x-axis to have one number to cover both subsets.? I can do this in other plots
by using axis=FALSE followed by a separate axis() command.? I have also tried
variations in the names= argument but can't get it to work.?
