reducing redundant work in methods package
Doing it like this: genericForPrimitive <- function(f, where = topenv(parent.frame()), mustFind = TRUE) { ans = .BasicFunsList[[f]] ## this element may not exist (yet, during loading), dom't test null if(mustFind && identical(ans, FALSE)) stop(gettextf("methods may not be defined for primitive function %s in this version of R",

reducing redundant work in methods package
Hi all, The function call series genericForPrimitive -> .findBasicFuns -> .findAll happens 4400 times while the GenomicRanges package is loading. Each time .findAll follows a chain of environments to determine that the methods namespace is the only one that holds a variable called .BasicFunsList. This accounts for ~10% of package loading time. I'm sure there is some history to that

Sys.sleep() burns up CPU on Solaris 8
I noticed that R was burning up 100% of a CPU when a call to Sys.sleep() was made. Upon investigation, I discovered that R_checkActivityEx() in src/unix/sys-std.c was putting the entire timeout (in usec) into the struct timeval tv_usec member, leaving tv_sec set to 0. I don't know about other unix variants, but Solaris requires that the timeout value be normalized (i.e. 0 <= tv_usec

S4 group "Math", "getGroupMembers", "genericForPrimitive"
Hi, I found the following on Windows 2000/NT R Version 1.9.1 (2004-06-21) (also Version 1.9.0): The S4 group "Math" doesn't work as documented; i.e., "log", "log10", "gamma" and "lgamma" are included in the documentation but don't work. See example code below. Moreover, what about 'genericForPrimitive' which is used in

reducing redundant work in methods package
I also just noticed that there is a bug: identical(ans, FALSE) should be is.null(ans). So no error is thrown: > methods:::genericForPrimitive("foo") NULL Will fix. reducing redundant work in methods package
Note that setMethod() resolves .BasicFunsList in the methods namespace directly when setting a method on a primitive. Somehow there should be consistency between genericForPrimitive() and the check in setMethod(). Also, we can probably step away from the use of elNamed(), given that [[ now uses exact matching. Have you tried patching methods to use .BasicFunsList directly as in setMethod? On

isGeneric() can return an error
Hi, I wonder if this is a feature or a bug: > isGeneric("&&") Error in genericForPrimitive(f) : methods may not be defined for primitive function ?&&? in this version of R > isGeneric(":") Error in genericForPrimitive(f) : methods may not be defined for primitive function ?:? in this version of R According to the man page:

rsynd-2.5.1 / batch.c patch
Platform: Compaq OpenVMS Alpha 7.3 Compiler: Compaq C T6.5 The following patch is an update to a previous patch that I submitted. The only change from the previous patch is that the const qualifier has been added to write_batch_*() routines to improve compiler efficiency. Because the gdiff -u was done against the distribution it includes the previous patch. The functions with no parameters

RE: [R] as.character methods
Thank you for your replies. I greatly appreciate the wealth of documentation on this subject and the time spent by the John Chambers and the R Core Team making object-orient programming in R a reality. I hope to be able to give code (not just bug reports) back to the R community as my projects advance. I hoping to generalize my as.character question to a real-life as.character / print method

Off-Topic Mambo Vulnerabilities & Patches
On the Mambo CMS site there are vulnerabilities found. Whilst this is not a CentOS problem, people rent/deploy servers (CentOS) on the net with Mambo. A guy in one of the user forums on the net, had his Mambo 4.5.2 server hacked and they installed some interesting stuff in /tmp . When a server is hacked it gives bad PR for the underlying OS. <----announcement on

OT: Asterisk and Mambo - help wanted
Hello everyone, So, this isn't exactly what it seems. I am not looking to integrate Asterisk and Mambo. I am the maintainer/creator of AstLinux, and I have recently decided that I should really have a better web site for it. I would like to use Mambo so that I can do updates easily, from anywhere, without having to waste time learning PHP/HTML/etc. Mambo CMS seems the best and most

Undocumented 'use.names' argument to c()

From July 30, 1998, is where do_c got split into do_c and do_unlist. With the implementation of 'c.Date' in R devel r71350, an argument named 'use.names' is

How do I get a flash plugin to work with firefox? I thought that I installed it correctly, but I have yet to see any flash videos through firefox. I keep being told that I need an additional plugin. When I folow directions, I'm told I already have it? At least once, I was told I needed to upgrade. In case it helps, here is the output of yum provides '*flash*' | grep -e lash -e dobe
