How hist() decides breaks?
Hi Folks, I'd like to know how hist() decides how many cells to use when it ignores my "suggestion" to use say 'hist(...,breaks=50)'. More specifically, I have the results of 10000 simulations, each returning an 8-vector, therefore 8 variables each with 10000 values. Some of these 8 have somewhat skew distributions. Say one of these 8 variables is X. I ask for H <-

Request for help (reference details)
I referred in my reply to a paper by Diaconis and Sturmfels. The exact reference is: Diaconis and Sturmfels, Algebraic algorithms for sampling from conditional distributions, Ann. Stat 26 (1998) 363-397. They cite the following: Besag and Clifford, Generalized Monte Carlo significance tests, Biometrika 76 (1989) 633-42. which actually contains your problem (section 3, Testing the Rasch model)

Probabilities greather than 1 in HIST
Dear all, I am a newbie in R and could not find help on this problem. I am trying to plot an histogram with probabilities in the y axis. This is the code I am using: #TLC uniform n=30 mi=1; mx=6 nrep=1000 xbar=rep(0,nrep) for (i in 1:nrep) {xbar[i]=mean(runif(n,min=mi,max=mx))} hist(xbar,prob=TRUE,breaks="Sturges",xlim=c(1,6),main=paste("n =",n), xlab="Média",

[External] Suggested Patch: Library returns matching installed packages when typo present
Thanks for the suggestion. However I don't think it is the right way to go. I also don't care for what install.packages() does. Signaling a warning and then an error means someone has to catch both the error and the warning, or suppress the warning, in order to handle the error programmatically. Now that library() signals a structured error there are other options. One possibility, at

Histograms and Sturges rule
Dear All, According to the Sturges rule, the number of classes of a histogram is the closest integer to 1 + logb(n,base=2) where n is the number of observations. The function hist(), by default, uses the Sturges rule. However, the code x <- 1:200 hist(x) produces a histogram with 10 classes and not 9 classes as determined by the Sturges rule. What am I missing? Thanks in advance, Paul

Contingency tables from data.frames
Dear list, I'm trying to do a set of generic functions do make contingency tables from data.frames. It is just running "nice" (I'm learning R), but I think it can be better. I would like to filter the data.frame, i.e, eliminate all not numeric variables. And I don't know how to make it: please, help me. Below one of the my functions ('er' is a mention to EasieR,

Tables: Invitation to make a collective package
Hi All, I would like to make an invitation to make a collective package with all functions related to TABLES. I know that there are many packages with these functions, the original idea is collect all this functions and to make a single package, because is arduous for the user know all this functions broadcast in many packages. So, I think that the original packages can continue with its

Rounding multinomial proportions
I present you with a function that solves a problem that has bugged me for many years. I think the problem may be general enough to at least consider adding this function, or a revamped version of it, to the 'stats' package, with the other multinomial functions reside. I'm using R to export data to text files, which are input data for an external model written in C++. Parts of the

hist() and density
There were some questions about hist() a couple of days ago which triggered this post. My question/suggestion is about the y-axis in hist. There are reasons to prefer making the y-axis density=relative frequency/bin width. One reason is that the height of the plot does not depend on the bin width; another is that if your histogram is in density then you can easily superimpose a smooth theoretical

(no subject)
Hi Group, I've a vector of 1000 numeric values for which I want to draw a histogram. I've read this vector into R with no variable name.I mean only the 1000 values, which makes V1 the name of the variable by default?? Then I tried > hist(V1, breaks = "Sturges", +      freq = NULL, probability = !freq, +      include.lowest = TRUE, right = TRUE, +      density = NULL, angle =

Problem with edit()
Since installing R 2.14.0 on my Mac (a Mac Pro running 10.6.8) an issue has arisen when using the vi editor in conjunction with the edit() command. More specifically, commented lines disappear from edited functions when using [functionname.R] <- edit(). That is, if you have created a function called “test.func” as such: function () { # This is a test ex _ 4 duh <- seq(1, 10) fuh

fill in area between 2 lines with a color
Hi - I'd like to have the area between 2 lines on a x-y plot be filled with grey, but I haven't had any luck using polygon or rect. (In reality, I'd like to do this for twice - once for a low group and once for a high group - and then I'd like to plot a set of data points for a 'normal' group together with these 2 grey areas.) Here's a simple example of the 2 lines:

Problem with postscript graphics device driver
I recently installed R version 2.01 for OS X (version 10.3.6). I now get the following error message when I try to use the postscript function: Error in get(name.opt, envir = envir) : Object ".PSenv" not found This did not happen in previous versions of R (i.e. 1.9). I do not get this error message when using the pdf graphics device driver. Thanks, Jeff Freedman

apply, lapply and data.frame in R 2.5
Hello everyone, A recent (in 2.5 I suspect) change in R is giving me trouble. I want to apply a function (tolower) to all the columns of a data.frame and get a data.frame in return. Currently, on a data.frame, both apply (for arrays) and lapply (for lists) work, but each returns its native class (resp. matrix and list): apply(mydat,2,tolower) # gives a matrix lapply(mydat,tolower) # gives
