Thank you Luke. That is why I don't use Rf_inherits but INHERITS which does not allocate, provided in the email body. I cannot do similarly for S4 classes, thus asking for some API for that. S4 coercion
I am extending a DBI connection by setClass("TSPostgreSQLConnection", contains=c("PostgreSQLConnection","TSdbOptions")) but the first time I use this I am getting a warning when it tries to coerce the TSPostgreSQLConnection to a PostgreSQLConnection. After the first use the warning stops, but the first warning is causing me problems when I do automatic checks

understanding virtual classes and extensions thereof

efficiency and memory use of S4 data objects
I do lots of analyses on large microarray data sets so memory use and speed and both important issues for me. I have been trying to estimate the overheads associated with using formal S4 data objects instead of ordinary lists for large data objects. dispatching on group generics with more than one formal
