mono fonts (was RE: RE: [R] SAS or R software)
Ah, I'm using Exceed Hummingbird 7.1 as the X server....
It does have fixed width fonts, and it is happy with variable width fonts up
to this extreme ....
A little more fiddling shows that this succeds with a linux based X11
server, and that even
plot(1,1)
par(family="mono",cex=8)
text(1,1,"foo")
segfaults.
I've tested values of cex. Anything above 2.1249

Yes, par(family="mono") would work, except that I get R segfaults from this
sequence:

Unfortunately, I haven't found any way to select fixed-width fonts, so I

FW: sas.get error
A couple of months ago, I asked Frank Harrell (fharrell@virginia.edu), the
author of the Hmisc S-Plus library, about the reason for his "No porting to
R" requirement. I may have previously posted his reply, but I don't see it
in the archives, so I'll send it again.
This is a edited version of our email conversation:

Deepayan, Paul:
Thanks very much for the very useful leads. I just spent some time this
afternoon implementing your suggestions and my early test results are very
encouraging.
Paul, I understand the potential device re-sizing issue with the convert
family of functions in grid, and will be in touch in case it becomes
problematic for my applications. I very much look forward to your upcoming

getGraphicsEvent() alternative for cairo graphics device?
Hi Paul,
No problem. Is it best if I post examples to the bug report 16951?
Kind regards,
Mark

Hi Paul,
Thanks for keeping me posted and letting me know what I should do.
Are there regression tests for other graphics functions in R? To me
that sounds a bit unnecessary. I think you get more testing from
people who use R; and having a good turnaround for applying patches
(some have been waiting 5 years) would invite better participation.
Thank you,
Frederick

Hi Paul,
OK I tried not to make the examples too fancy.
Please let me know what you think. They should probably be amended to
support the Windows platform, but I think that task would be much
easier for someone with access to Windows...
By the way I'm Cc'ing Mark O'Connell who shared with me some great
getGraphicsEvent examples - well, I found them useful, perhaps if
these are going

Mark, if you have any examples to share, they would also be gratefully
received.

Hi Paul,
Thank you, for some reason I didn't seem to get an email notification
for your bugzilla comment!
I will try to send you something shortly.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your efforts. Do you have an idea when my patch(es) might
be committed? Is there anything I can do to help move this along?
Thanks,
Frederick

RE: Does tcltk matter for the plot
Hi Paul,
I use executable codes of tex and latex from
http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/packages/tetex.html) and compile the
original R-1.9.1 source codes using C for AIX compiler V6.0 and Fortran
for AIX compiler 7.1.1 and generate 64 bit R environments. It works
well.

Categorizing Fonts using Statistical Methods
Dear list members,
Every "modern" OS comes with dozens of useless fonts, so that the
current font drop-down list in most programs is overcrowded with fonts
one never will use. Selecting a useful font becomes a nightmare.
In an attempt to ease the selection of useful fonts, I began looking
into sorting fonts using some statistical techniques. I summed my ideas

[FORGED] can't print ggplot with Chinese characters to pdf files
Hi,
Following Paul's instruction, I have installed the Cairo. I tried to run
the program, and there is no error message at all. I did see the Chinese
title in the plot if I ask my RStudio to show the plot (if I type "p1"),
but the pdf file shows the plots without the Chinese titles.
library(ggplot2)
library(gridExtra)
df1<-data.frame(x=1:2, y=3:4, z=5:6)
#p1<-ggplot(df1,

[FORGED] can't print ggplot with Chinese characters to pdf files
Hi,
Sorry to bother you with this question here.
I tried to install Macports on my Mac OS Sierra, and type "sudo port
install cairo", but it did not respond. I haven't seen any file name or app
called Macports, but one file called "port" which is located at
loca/bin/port"
How should I do it?
Thanks,
John

R-beta: New R Version for Unix
Version 0.60 of R for Unix is now available. Release of this version
has been delayed for a variety of reasons, but we hope that it will
provide a good deal more stability and functionality than previous
versions. However it should be regarded as of "alpha" quality for a
short shakedown period.
We would like user feedback to help us improve the quality of R.
