Good news regarding Wine and patent threats
There's a groklaw article summarizing recent discussion about the impact
of the Bilski case on software patents:

"The judge says this kind of cloning could be done without infringing
Microsoft's copyrights, but how about its patents? Prior to Bilski, one
might give one answer. Now, one might give another."

SCO & R
I apologize if this has been addressed before;
recently
I read an article in Forbes which discussed how SCO
was going after companies that have been using Linux.
The article made the point that the ideas behind GPL
are under attack precisely because no one is making
sure
that the code being put into the freely avail.

isn't owned by someone else.
Here's my question: Is R

Been there, done that. Samba 2.2 was built into the base release,

Video interview with Eben Moglen.
Hi all,
Hope this isn't off-topic, but I thought the lists
might be interested in a video interview I did with Eben
Moglen, the head of the Software Freedom Law Center. Eben
has given legal advice and help for Samba for many years,
and is a very interesting person to listen to.
Hope people find this enjoyable:

Hi Fred.
Appreciate your response.
Maybe in my explanation I have some red and green apples, but I can
agree that my understanding is as you explained it. ๐
The point is that if I can successfully stream mp4 with H.264 and AAC
encoding without any issues to icecast, I can then use ffmpeg to
turn it into HLS which then solves my iOS support issue. The CPU
cost of repackaging MP4 into HLS

HTTP parse error due to an extra percent sign
If you append an extra percent sign to a URL that gets passed to
mongrel, it will return a Bad Request error. Kind of odd that
"http://localhost/%" causes a "Bad Request" instead of a "Not Found"
error.
Here is the error from the mongrel log:
HTTP parse error, malformed request (127.0.0.1):
#<Mongrel::HttpParserError: Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails.>

FXO/FXS card
Hi, I thought I remember seeing somewhere on the Asterisk website a card
that had 16 ports fxo or fxs, that was user selectable with straps on the
card. Am I going crazy, I can't seem to find it now.

Best method of grabbing Now Playing metadata with PHP?
Hi...
Can someone do me the favour of pointing us at a routine, library,
script or technique that will grab Now Playing metadata (Title, Artist,
Album) remotely (ie from another machine) from an Icecast 2.4.x server
reliably for logging purposes, preferably using PHP?
Ideally we would grab the metadata when it changes - all the methods
we've tried so far require us to poll the server so

Printers Icon
I have installed Samba2.2.7a on an Ultra5 Solaris 8 Operating System. The
smb.conf file has been configured and all appears to work fine. However,
along with my shared resource, I am seeing the Printers icon. I only want
to use Samba to share resources, and not for printing. Is there a way to
make the Printers Icon invisible? I already tried the hide files, and
veto files parameters in

Mapstraction Sandbox & V2 push
Greetings from the day of rest after a week of Where. It was a great
time out here - and there is a lot of interest in the community around
Mapstraction.
The new Sandbox (http://mapstraction.appspot.com) made surprisingly
quick rounds and lots of kudos. It will be a great place to demo
Mapstraction and encourage developers.
We had a very good discussion about Mapstraction at WhereCamp. Pamela

[LLVMdev] [cfe-dev] [ADVERTISEMENT] open positions in Apple's Swift compiler team
Either you're being disingenuous are truly looking to confuse a
situation only someone ignorant of what LLVM could ever misconstrue.
Why would Apple dump hundreds of millions in R&D with Clang/LLVM,
create Swift and introduce it to everyone and the press for WWDC 2014,
followed up by posting on the LLVM list only to be moving away from LLVM?
More importantly, who appointed you e-mail
