tapply() and barplot() help files for 1.8.1
Hi,
I've just upgraded to 1.9.0 and one of my Sweave files that produces a
number of barplots in a standard manner now produces them in a
different way. I have made a couple of small changes to my code to
get the back the output I was getting before upgrading and now (mostly
out of curiosity) would like to understand what has changed.
I *think* I've tracked it down to tapply() and/or

Barplot errors in MASS script
Reading "Modern Applied Statististics with S" and trying the corresponding
examples both in the book and in ../lib/R/library/MASS/script, I'm now trying
chapter 4 plotting bars with the following code on a linux box with R 1.8.1:

library(lattice)

lung.deaths <- aggregate(ts.union(mdeaths, fdeaths), 1)

barplot() does not draw bars correctly in R 1.9.0 (PR#6776)
Bars are not stacked, but superimposed. This happens even with the first

tN <- table(Ni <- rpois(100, lambda=5))
r <- barplot(tN, col='gray')

barplot
I??ve tried version 1.9.0 barplot with these (and others) example from the
help page:
tN <- table(Ni <- rpois(100, lambda=5))
r <- barplot(tN, col='gray')
I get :
<<...OLE_Obj...>>
Same example with version 1.8.1 gives the following result:
<<...OLE_Obj...>>
What is wrong with v.1.9.0?
Thanks,

tapply/barplot (PR#6983)
Hello,
there seems to be a bug in tapply or barplot in R 1.9.0 that was not in =
earlier versions. The following code creates two nice barplots in 1.7.0, =
but the first one is bad in 1.9.0:
par(mfrow=3Dc(1,2))
x <- rep(1:10,10)
y <- runif(100,1,100)
z <- tapply(y,x,mean)
barplot(z)
barplot(as.numeric(z))
although is.numeric(z) returns TRUE!

barplot fill patterns
Dear R-helpers,
I will like to know if there is a way to generate a stacked column
graph using both patterns and colors to fill the bars. I have many
categories for the number of color available in R, so I will like R to
start with solid colors and then use patterns an colors. I have been
using barplot and some code that I found in the archives, but I am
still having bars with the

barplot & plot together
Dear colleges,
I'm trying to combine a barplot and a plot in a single figure as follows:
data <- 1:6
t <- barplot(data, axes=F)
par(new= T)
plot(t, data, type="b")
However, as you can see in the example, the dots of the second plot do
not fall in the midpoint of the bars in the first. Any trick for setting
the 2 plots at the same scale?
I have unsuccessfully tried:
plot(t,

barplot default colors
Dear R-help,
Can some one explain why barplot() uses changing colors in the bars by
default? I should think that most of the time when people draw barplots,
they want the bars to be in the same color. (At least that's what I'd
expect. The first time I used barplot() in R, I was shocked to see the
colors.) As an example, one example in ?layout draws a scatterplot with
histograms drawn

Putting legend *outside* plotting area
Is there a simple way to put a legend outside the plot area for a simple
plot?
I found... (at http://www.harding.edu/fmccown/R/)
# Expand right side of clipping rect to make room for the legend
*par(xpd=T, mar=par()$mar+c(0,0,0,4))*
# Graph autos (transposing the matrix) using heat colors,
# put 10% of the space between each bar, and make labels
# smaller with horizontal y-axis labels

trouble positioning legends on barplot written to a file
I'm trying to generate some plots for print publication and I'm having trouble
getting them the way I want. I get a plot with a legend that overlaps the bars
and looks bad. Also, I'm saving this as PDF file (whatever happened to the
"png" function to save as PNG format, in r 1.4.1?)
I've tried a number of things, which produce a number of questions.

R 1.9.1 is released
I've rolled up R-1.9.1.tgz a short while ago. This is a maintenance
version mainly to fix a number of minor bugs and issues (the most
annoying one seems to have been the change to barplots of tables) and
some installation issues.
Because of the relocation the CVS archives, there is no direct access
to the files until they show up on the CRAN master site. You can then

How to add marker in Stacked bar plot?
Hi,
I am working on stacked bar plot and want to add marker(arrow) in stacked
bar plot.
DF=data.frame(names=c("tomato", "potato", "cabbage", "sukuma-wiki",
"terere"), freq=c(7,4,5,8,20))
barplot(as.matrix(DF[,2]), col=heat.colors(length(DF[,2])), legend=DF[,1],
xlim=c(0,9), width=2)

Re: Bar plot with variable width (down a drill hole) - now missing intervals?
Hi again,
Thanks Ted and Marc its works. But of course after pulling in in some
real life data I discoverd one hitch. Often there are missing
intervals. For example:
from <- c(0, 1.2, 4.0, 4.2, 5.0, 25.0, 30.1, 45)
to <- c(1.2, 4.0, 4.2, 5.0, 25, 30.1, 36.2, 50)
intensity <- c(0, 1, 3, 2, 1, 0, 2, 5)
barplot(intensity, width = -(to - from),
space = 0, horiz = TRUE, ylim =

Barplot and R 1.9.0
I would like to preface this by saying that I have not been using R for long, and consider myself a beginner. But the more I use and learn R, the more impressed I am with both the 'product' itself, and the efforts of those developing it.
It has been noted (eg Duncan Murdoch, 15 April), that the barplot function in R 1.9.0, when used on a tabulated single factor, produces a plot only one

In ".../Bundle.Rcheck/" the packages of the bundle are "merged" into a single
