R 1.8.0 alpha
The countdown to R version 1.8.0 has begun. As a novelty, we now make preliminary source tarballs available somewhat earlier in the process. They will be found in http://cran.us.r-project.org/src/base with names of the form R-1.8.0alpha_2003-09-10.tar.gz The first one was created a moment ago; subsequent ones will be created by a cron job that runs at 05:00 local (Wisconsin) time. R 1.7.1 beta is out
I've wrapped up the first beta release of 1.7.1. It is available on http://cran.us.r-project.org/src/base/ Things are set up so that a new version should be generated every morning at 7am local time (Wisconsin), until the day of the final release. (And consequentially, although it will propagate to the rest of CRAN, it will most likely be out of date by then, so do get it from the above

R 1.1.0 going into feature freeze
The planned release of R 1.1.0 will be next Thursday. The development version is going into feature freeze tomorrow, meaning that we'll only do testing and fix simple bugs during the next week. Those of you who prefer to find bugs before releases instead of afterwards may want to try it out and tell us what crawls out. -- O__ ---- Peter Dalgaard Blegdamsvej 3 c/ /'_

Feature freeze on recommended packages coming up
As of 19:00 GMT we'll declare a feature freeze on the set of recommended packages. We will then have one week to ferret out as many problems as we can before final code freeze and platform testing. At the same time R-base is code-frozen, i.e. only critical bugs will be fixed. If you want to help making R 1.5.0 as bug-free as possible, it could be a good idea to install the set of

R 1.5.0 scheduled for April 29th, feature freeze April 8
The core team has decided to release R 1.5.0 on April 29th. Somewhat earlier than maybe expected, but we realized that we needed a phase-shift away from our usual cycle with main releases in June and December since it was placing feature freezes just when several members were in a creative phase due to end of teaching. The roadmap is as follows April 8 feature freeze on r-base April 15 code

Feature freeze for R-1.5.0
OK, so the feature freeze for 1.5.0 is on as of now. Basically this means that we will not add new features or API modifications before the release on April 29. The set of recommended packages will go into a similar feature freeze one week from now, when the base package will enter a hard code freeze (only critical bugs fixed), and a week further on, also the recommended packages will go into

R-1.7.0 beta available
I've set up for daily distribution builds of the current development version. These are available at http://cran.us.r-project.org/src/base/ The current one is R-1.7.0beta_2003-03-26.tar.gz (and it's pretty useless to wait for them to be mirrored elsewhere...) Notice that these are made using "make dist" (like the final release will be) and thus they may have

2.0.1 countdown
We plan to a patch release on Nov.15 to fix up various problems that cropped up after the release of R 2.0.0. Daily beta snapshots will be made available until the day of release. Please check if your favourite bugs have been fixed (but notice that since we try hard to keep the patch versions stable, some items may have to wait for the 2.1 release.) Also, please help us with platform testing.

R-beta: New version available
A new version is available from ftp.stat.auckland.ac.nz:/pub/R/R-0.61.tgz and soon from CRAN mirrors everywhere. As usual, there is at least one unfixed bug in the release, but this time, we hope that we have set things up so that future bugfixes can be released more or less immediately. Merry Christmas! The R core team. **********************************************************************

R-beta: Bug tracking system
I'm happy to announce that there is now a real bug tracking system for R. Hopefully, this will make it easier for us to keep track of unresolved bugs, which has been difficult because of the massive amount of email that we receive. The system, which is of the JitterBug variety is available through the web at http://r-bugs.biostat.ku.dk or via email to r-bugs at biostat.ku.dk (which is

R-beta: R-0.62.1
Due to a glitch with the CVS version management software (quite likely my own fault), R-0.62.0 got shipped without the "tests" directory. Apart from preventing "make tests" from working, it also has untoward consequences for "make clean" and the like. So there's an updated version in R-0.62.1.tgz in the usual places. For good measure, there's also a patch

R-beta: R-0.61.2 released
R-0.61.2.tgz is now available from the Auckland FTP site, from where it should spread to the CRAN sites during the next day or two. Unless you're in a big hurry or actually living in New Zealand, please don't get it from Auckland. There is also an R-0.61.1-0.61.2.diff.gz which can be used to patch an existing R-0.61.1. Instructions for patching are in the VERSION file in same directory.
