coxph models with frailty
Dear R users:
I'm generating the following survival data:
set.seed(123)
n=200 #sample size
x=rbinom(n,size=1,prob=.5) #binomial treatment
v=rgamma(n,shape=1,scale=1) #gamma frailty
w=rweibull(n,shape=1,scale=1) #Weibull deviates
b=-log(2) #treatment's slope
t=exp( -x*b -log(v) + log(w) ) #failure times
c=rep(1,n) #uncensored indicator

Help with migrations and create
After creating a table in a create table migration, I''m then attempting
to populate a couple of rows of data in the table using the create
method. The first row gets inserted into the database, but any further
calls generate a select against the database, but no insert.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it inappropriate to create more than a
single row of data in a table using

What version is sh?
I'm trying to write an automatic check of the toolset installation for
R. It'll get all the tools to print their version numbers, and
complain if they aren't acceptable ones.
However, I can't see how to get sh to print version information. Is
there some way to do it?
The sh I'm worried about is the one that comes with Cygwin, if there
isn't a standard approach.

upload file in a database or a server?
Hi,
I would like some suggestions. I''m wondering if it''s better to upload a
file directly into a database or to put the file into the server and
keep the path in the database?
Thanks,
Eric

Friday at 1PM: SIPVicious has a new tool: svcrash
Hi,
Got some great news a few days ago from Sandro Gauci (@SandroGauci)
and we'll be talking about this with him this Friday at 1PM.
SIPVicious, the free security tools for SIP scanning, now include a
new tool: svcrash. It is aimed at helping system administrators stop
bandwidth consuming scans making
use of svwar and svcrack. Here is the announcement on SIPViscious blog:

ActiveRecord / PostgreSQL Performance Issue
I''m currently using ruby-postgres (the compiled interface to
PostgreSQL), and I''m seeing a huge performance hit with larger :binary
fields in ActiveRecord subclasses owing, it appears, to the use of the
bytea field type and the fact that using that datatype necessitates an
in-memory "unescape" conversion. The best I can tell from looking at the

One of the messages must be wrong, but I need a native English speaker
to tell me which one.

Multiple "has" in ActiveRecord
Please excuse a newbie question, but I couldn''t find anything by
searching the archives.
What I want to know is how to have multiple references to the same
class/table within a class. For example, let''s say I have a table called
People:
create table people (
id serial8 primary key
,name);
which just holds a list of the people in the database. Then I have

mongrel goes out to lunch for about 5 - 10 minutes
Not sure if this is the list for posting questions like this but please let
me know. We are using Mongrel 0.13.4, Mongrel Cluster 0.2.1 with Rails
1.2.2 with 3 different mongrel processes running in the cluster. All
appears to be well for hours and then one of the mongrel processes appears
to hang and all incoming requests to that process timeout. The requests are
not logged in the rails log,

zfs going out to lunch
I''ve been writing via tar to a pool some stuff from backup, around
500GB. Its taken quite a while as the tar is being read from NFS. My
ZFS partition in this case is a RAIDZ 3-disk job using 3 400GB SATA
drives (sil3124 card)
Ever once in a while, a "df" stalls and during that time my io''s go

[LLVMdev] Toronto area LLVM lunch
It seems that it would be more convenient for some of the folks
working on the Toronto area to meet for lunch instead of an after work
social.
As an experiment, lets try to host the fist one:
* Where: Tone Sushi (414 Queen W). They do have some vegetation or
non-fish options.
* When: Next Tuesday (17th) at 12:00.
It is a similar idea to the socials, just less drinks (at this one at
least :-) ).

TDM400 - channel out to lunch?
Today I had channel 1 on my TDM400 go to sleep, verified by pluggin in
known good telco lines in various combinations on channel 1 through 4 -
problem is channel 1, not anything external. So after seeing lots of
stuff on the list re: TDM400's I power cycled, removed board and let
linux say nothing's home, replaced board, told linux to ignore it etc.

WWDC Puppeteer lunch
Reminder for Mac Puppeteers going to WWDC
How about we meet for lunch at noon on Tuesday. Let''s try to get the
table closet to the Odwalla refrigerator, just for reference. We can
get more specific on this list on the 8th after we verify the set up.
I might even get there a little earlier and put down "reserved" tags.

La_library() always returns "" on R-devel?
Seems like this in 83986 [1] needs a fix in Lapack.c:
if (dladdr((void *) F77_NAME(ilaver), &dl_info)) {
char buf[PATH_MAX+1];
char *res = realpath(dl_info.dli_fname, buf);
if (res) {
SEXP nfo = R_NilValue;
if (strstr(res, "flexiblas"))
nfo = R_flexiblas_info();

Dovecot auto vacation with sieve doesn't work
Guys, I'm running out of hair to pull out ;).
Can anyone out there say that this does work?? To me this is looking
like a bug and I'm not sure whether it's the sieve plugin or the dovecot
deliver program. I have also had no luck the the "reject" sending any
reply back to the sender.
My setup:
OS: Solaris 10 sparc platform
postfix: 2.5.2
dovecot: 1.1.2
sieve plugin: 1.1.5
