pass by reference -- how to do it
Hello,
Pass by reference appears to be a topic which comes up
from time to time, but I wasn't able to find something in
the R-help archives which tells how to accomplish it.
I have a problem that you may have seen before -- R runs
out of memory when processing large matrices. Part of the
problem for me is that I am using some large matrices as
function arguments, and these are modified,

Spurious data in file retrieved from Windows share via Samba
Hello,
I am using Samba to read a file on a Windows share from Linux.
Linux version is Ubuntu 9.04 (I think). Not sure about the Samba
version (sorry, can't check it now); it's whatever was packaged with
Ubuntu. Windows version is Windows Server 2003 SP 2.
Sometimes the file contains obviously spurious data such as
random bytes, and excerpts of programs or log files.
I'm not sure if

Can't find asterisk.ctl under CentOS installation
Hi Everyone,
I recently upgraded to Asterisk 1.4 using the RPMS at ATrpms.net on
CentOS 4.4, Asterisk starts up but when I start the console it reports
this error and drops out.
"Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does
/var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl exist)?"
I have checked to see that the file asterisk.ctl actually exists. Any
suggestions?

how to get /var/run/asteris/asterisk.ctl
Hello there everyone,
Well I have set up Asteriks 6.0 and almost have Freepbx working too.
However, freepbx is showing me that /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl is
not found. I confirmed that by going to the directory. How do I
get /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl put in correctly? I am using a
Ubuntu 8.10 system. Thanks much.

Zap 1.4 error line 0: Unable to open master device '/dev/zap/ctl'
I've looked over EVERY resource I can find, but have run short of a
solution. I'm running CentOS 4.4. Just installed Asterisk 1.4 and Zaptel
1.4 and libpri, but when I run ztcfg I get this error: line 0: Unable to
open master device '/dev/zap/ctl'
I realize this is a udev error (or from what I've read), but I cannot find
out how to resolve this. I've reinstalled zaptel

Hello,
I have a problem shutting down a domU with xen-4.1.2, which doesn''t terminate
the corresponding blktap2 process, since one (other) VM uses a image file,
which contains spaces in its file name.

DAHDI trouble (again) Unable to open master device '/dev/zap/ctl'
Because of a kernel upgrade i needed to recompile DAHDI. Dahdi 2.0.0 with
2.0.1 was working ok, after the reboot and compile it doesn't start
anymore.
Firstly it tells me it is using /etc/zaptel.conf which is deprecated, if i
remove that file it complains that this file is missing.....
Secondly i get an error about a missing dev file which refers to zap
(which seems strange to me because

Unable to open master device '/dev/zap/ctl'
I installed TDM400P and X100P pci cards in a system running mandrake 10.1

Today's git mis-reads CTL-S
When running Notepad2 with today's git wine, the keystrokes CTL-S no longer works. Instead, it displays CTL-S on the page in a funny little black box.
I have Karmic Koala and the new 2.6.20 kernel, 'tis true, but CTL-S worked this morning.

/var/run/asterisk.ctl configuration
People who use "asterisk -r" already know that if you don't try it
as root (for example webservers), you don't get access. Of course
you can chmod it aech time you start asterisk, but that gets annoying
after two times.
I have made a patch (against HEAD and 1.0.5) which makes it possible
for you (=asterisk admin) to configure the ownership and permissions

Ctl+Alt+F12
I am migrating from Mandriva to Centos (currently running dual boot). One
thing I miss on Centos is being able to switch to Console 12 and see system
messages in real time. My IPCop firewall has this turned on as well. Is
this a setting I can change, or a program I can add, or is it not available?

asterisk.ctl limitations
Hi
I wrote a small patch to netcat to work with unix domain sockets to
enable me to communicate with an asterisk daemon through the
unix-domain socket /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl .
Only then I noticed that reading the code is done very differently than
a typical network protocol: it expects every command in a separate read.
Basically I used the following filter to pipe commands from the

possibility of R/Maxima linking
Hello,
I'm aware that recently there has been discussion of R joining forces with
an algebra system in some way. Here is my $0.02.
I suggest linking R with Maxima (http://maxima.sf.net).
Maxima is written in Lisp. Maxima objects are pretty simple.
Maxima works on expressions, and almost every expression
is a Lisp list of the form ((op) arg1 arg2 arg3 ...) which
associates an operator and

how to constrast with factorial experiment
Hello, R users,
I have two factors (treat, section) anova design experiment where
there are 3 replicates. The objective of the experiment is to test if
there is significant difference of yield between top (section 9 to 11)
and bottom (section 9 to 11) of the fruit tree under treatment. I
found that there are interaction between two factors. I wonder if I
can contrast means from levels of
