It would be wonderful if the CRAN mirror had an easy way to set a "default CRAN
mirror".
Current behavior is to have to choose a CRAN mirror the first time a package is
installed in a session. The closest mirror site is always the same for me, and
I wouldn't wish to change it unless it

Output from examples in help files
I have a large number of troff help files which are automatically converted to .Rd files. Many of these have examples which contain the printed output of the examples. This makes example(functionname) not work. Is there a way to avoid removing all this output by delimiting it in some way such that the output will not appear in R-ex? Secondly, it would be nice if there was a place where output

GUI's for R
Hello,
I am not currently using R but I have been using S+ for sevaral years. I
think that I fit in the category of power users, never using the GUI
prefering the flexibility of a command line interface (CLI). In a short
while I will try to move to R, that is if we can convince our IT people
that installing a freeware package on a Unix server will not damaged the
companie's network! The

vcov and survival
Dear Terry,
Even the behaviour of lm() and glm() isn't entirely consistent. In both cases, singularity results in NA coefficients by default, and these are reported in the model summary and coefficient vector, but not in the coefficient covariance matrix:

+ data=longley)

Function some()
Dear R-devel list members,
Probably not an opportune time for this, given the immanent release of
2.0.0, but I was just reminded (while preparing a lecture) of a function
that I find useful and that I though might be a candidate for the utils
package: The function, which I call some(), behaves like head() and tail(),
from which it is adapted, except that it samples from an object (e.g., rows

plot, spineplot, boxplot in R 2.2.0
I noticed, what seened to me, to be odd. These produce
a boxplot in the first case and a spineplot in the second
case in R .2.2.0:
plot(Sepal.Length ~ Species, iris)
plot(Species ~ Sepal.Length, iris)
What if one wants to exchange axes? Does the fact that
this seemingly innocuous change result in completely
different graphics make sense? Is it desirable?

globalVariables()
Dear r-devel list members,
By placing a call to the new (with R 2.15.1) globalVariables() in the development version of the Rcmdr package, I've succeeded in reducing the "notes" produced by R CMD check from dozens to two. But I still get the following notes, even though '.commander.done' is in the call to globalVariables():

obtained with lapply). I want to sum those matrices. Is there a

Directory-like data organisation w/ environments?
Dear r-users!
I wonder if there is a way of designing a directory like structure for
holding my data using environments?
It would be nice if I could implement a kind of 'cd' command to change
to a differend environment etc.
Can anybody give me a hint?

Documentation examples for lm and glm
FWIW, before all the examples are changed to data frame variants, I think there's fairly good reason to have at least _one_ example that does _not_ place variables in a data frame.
The data argument in lm() is optional. And there is more than one way to manage data in a project. I personally don't much like lots of stray variables lurking about, but if those are the only variables out

car/MANOVA question
Dear colleagues,
I had a question wrt the car package. How do I evaluate whether a
simpler multivariate regression model is adequate?
For instance, I do the following:

TCITex and R
Several times my packages have fallen foul of the latex check at the
uploading-to-CRAN stage, creating extra work for Kurt Hornik. I've never
bothered trying to get latex working on my own packages (happy with
vanilla help) but am told that "latex is the closest thing to a syntax
checker for Rd files" and that I should set it up. Now, there is already
a latex on my (Windows XP)

documentation for survival5?
Dear R-Helpers:
What other references are there on the capabilities of the survival5
package other than the help files and the chapter on survival analysis
in every edition of Modern Applied Statistics with S? I'm thinking of
something like "An Introduction to Survival Analysis in R" with worked
examples that might complement or extend the chapter in MASS.
Thanks,
Spencer
