Object finalization
I see some code in R to attach finalizers to external pointer references
(Register[C]Finalizer). Anyone have an example of how to code the
finalizer? R_RegisterCFinalizer accepts a C function, but I can't see
how to get it to operate on the pointer, since the pointer is not passed
to the function when its called. RegisterFinalizer takes an R closure,
but how is it called from R (tried

name spaces?
I'm revisiting the R/S DBI package and was wondering if there is any
plan to implement package name spaces in R/S. I've taken to the habit of
prepending a few characters to function names in packages to avoid
collisions, e.g., dbConnect(). An alternative would be DBI::connect()
(s/::/preferred/) which in some ways I find more pleasing. Not having
thought about it in detail, it seems pretty

generic database access methods
I've been putting together a package that defined generic methods for
database access. The packages is called "Rdbi." It borrows as much as
possible from existing database packages / proposals. I'd like to start
a discussion about the proposed interface. Here's what I've come up
with so far:
#
# Rdbi: connectionMethods.R
#
dbConnect <- function(dbObj, ...)

Ordered factors and DBMS
Is there any way of preserving order of ordered factors when storing a
table in PostgreSQL?
I have been using PostgreSQL and the RPgSQL package to store a large
table with answers such as "Strong disagreement", "Strong agreement",
"Mild disagreement". "Mild agreement". When reading the table, such
answers are turned into factors, apparently in

Anyway help will be greatly appreciated.

Install rgdal, lazy loading error
Hi all,
I have successfully made and installed both gdal, and proj.4, but still
cannot get rgdal to be installed in R. I think i'm very close. I do not
have root access, if that matters, i've installed everything locally. I'm
using debian on a beowulf cluster.
I call:
install.packages("rgdal", .libPaths()[1], configure.args =

Help with Subtracting an effect from a Mixed Model
Hi Everyone,
I posted a similar question about a week ago, but haven't gotten any
replies -- I'm afraid that's because my previous question was too
vague. Let me try again with a more specific question, and I hope
someone can help. NOTE, I know I should be using the newer lme4
package, I just haven't had a chance to update my version of R yet, so
the question below relates

R/S and large datasets - Database access (also Re: SAS and S/R)
A consensus seems to emerge : R would excel to exploratory work on
small/middle-sized datasets, while SAS would be able to munch much
larger datasets.
However, I see the "size" problem as a red herring. The objects that
have to stay "in core" are usually much smaller than the dataset. For
example, for problems involving fixed-effects linear models, you need

[Newbie] Row-Iterator for data.frame??
hello all,
for my diploma-thesis i want to statitically analyze near-infrared-spectra.
a spectrum is given by the y-values of 1038 equi-distant x-points.
in nature, a spectrum is a continuous curve. for analysis, every x-point
is seen as a statistical variable.
now my problem:
first, i read a csv-table in a data.frame called sTable via read.table.
besides some meta-data there are 1038 variables

Freeing memory used by R.
Hello R developers,
Windows 2000
R Version 1.2.2
I am running using R.dll in a Windows application. It is loaded into memory
when needed, used as required, and then (hopefully) destroyed while the
application continues with other, unrelated activities. The problem is that
I can't find any way to free all memory used by R without terminating the
process in which R is running, which I

MCMCpack gelman.plot and gelman.diag
Hi,
A question. When I run gelman.diag and gelman.plot
with mcmc lists obtained from MCMCregress, the results are following.

+ thin = 10, verbose = FALSE, beta.start = NA, sigma2.start = NA,

GIS and R
Dear All,
Does anyone know of any GIS packages for R? I know that there are
GIS facilities for S-Plus (eg Arc Info), and am looking for freeware
equivalents.
Best wishes,

stepAIC/lme (1.6.2)
Based on the stepAIC help, I have assumed that it only was for lm, aov, and
glm models. I gather from the following correspondence that it also works
with lme models.

choosing a random element from a vector
I have a vector consisting of zeroes and ones, e.g. 101001.
I would like to pick a random element from this vector equal to one. In the
example above, that means that only elements 1, 3, or 6 can be chosen.
Is there a simple and fast way to do that? (my vector of zeroes and ones is
very large)
Thank you.

Layout of Fourier frequencies
I'm doing convolutions in the frequency domain and need to know the
layout of the Fourier modes returned by fft. (This is leading up to a
more involved question about moment generating functions, but I need to
know if I've got this part correct first.)
I think in 1D the pattern is:
0 1 2 3 -2 1 (even)
0 1 2 3 -3 2 1 (odd)
In 2D is it simply (for a square matrix):
0 1 2 -1 (horizontal)
