can you recommend a good manual for R that starts with a data set and gives
demonstrations on what can be done using R? I downloadedR Langauage
definition and An introduction to R but haven't found them overly useful.
I'd really like to be able to follow some tutorials using a dataset or many
datasets. The datasets I have available on R are

Dear all,
The 'make check' step fails for the pacakge mva on IBM AIX.
The tail of the Rout log file looks like:

R datasets ownership(copyright) and license
Dear R Developers,
Recently filed (and dismissed ;) ) law suit by Astrolabe against tz
database developers caused a lot of media-press and discussions and
created some kind of precedence in the USA [3]. But also it imho showed
that similar attacks might happen in the future, and possibly against
data sets which are not that obviously "factual" thus after all might
fall under copyright

problems with share permissions
Hi
I had a few test shares created and they were working fine. Users could
read or write depending on the windows group that was defined on the
share. I have since removed the test shares and created the file
structure needed and setup the smb.conf file with the share names. I
have also setup the groups and assigned them to the respective
directories. Problem is the users can connect to

R-beta: autoloading a required library
I wanted to use the dist() function from the mva library in my own
library, so I put require(mva) in my files. When my library loads, a
message about "Autoloading ... mva" appears. But when I call dist() now
within my functions the message
Error in .C("dist", as.double(x), nrow(x), ncol(x), double(len),
as.integer(method)) : C/Fortran function not in load table
appears.

R-beta 2004-04-07 build failed on AIX
I thought I'd give this another shot before the official release. I tried
building R-beta_2004-04-07 on the AIX system that I have access to, and it
seemed to failed at lazy-loading survival. I'd very much appreciate any
pointer on what to try or look for next.
1. I set OBJECT_MODE to 64 for building 64-bit binary.
2. I edited config.site with the following:

Labels in ICLUST
Dear all,
I can't get the labels slot in ICLUST to accept a character vector.
library(psych)
test.data <- Harman74.cor$cov
ic.out <- ICLUST(test.data,nclusters
=4,labels=letters[1:ncol(test.data)]) ##?Error in !labels : invalid
argument type
ic.out <- ICLUST(test.data,nclusters =4,labels=1:ncol(test.data)) ## OK
Any ideas?

Problem with rc10
I just upgraded our test server from rc6 to rc10...
ISSUE #1
I noticed that we no longer are getting two "From_" lines. However, the
one that was good (had the original sender e-mail address) is now gone.
The one with "dovecot.deliver" remains.
I attempted to add "-d test" to the mailbox_command line in main.cf as follows:

R-beta: building libraries on Win95
I am using rw0613b with djtools on Win95.
No problem with makefiles building fortran and C dll's, plus can build
R.exe with the supplied libraries (including mva).
Why then do I get the following error when I try to building an existing
library separately, eg...
(/R-0.61.3/src/gnuwin32)$ make -f MakePkg -C ../library/mva PKG=mva
make.exe: Entering directory `c:/R-0.61.3/src/library/mva'

Samba + Quickbooks Idle Crash
I have a samba server running on ubuntu 9.10 with windows (both Xp and
vista) clients running quickbooks (accounting software).
Quickbooks can connect to the samba server and get access to the data
files with no problems, if the secretary uses quickbooks continuously
there is never a problem the system works for hours on end. However if the
secretary leaves the software running but doing nothing

Suggestion for the reproducibility of R home page figure
Dear R-devel,
googling for the single letter R yields R-home page as the firt hit,
which is extremly nice.
By clicking on the figure you get the code of the "Winner of the R
Homepage graphics competition 2004."
By copy/pasting in your R console it doesn't work because it is impossible
to install the mva package.
This is my point.
As documented in ONEWS the reason is simple:

Skype for SIP
By the way, I am currently testing this product from Skype. I would
like to be able to receive calls ona Skype name on our pbx.
1) It works beautifully and you don't have to do anything in particular.
2) It's disproportionally expensive which is why I want Skype for
Asterisk to work.
SfS costs $5 per month per channel just to test the beta! I find that
insane, but I wanted to test it.
