Another failed attempt to install an R package in Ubuntu
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 through Wubi on a HP Pavilion dv4000 (my home computer) and I recently installed R 2.7.1. I attempted to install the randomForest package from within the R environment and from the Linux terminal. Both attempts failed. I've tried several mirrors but with no luck. Below is an example of the series of error messages I got when R told me that the installation

Installing RandomForest on SuSe Linux - warnings
I installed RF on Linux OpenSuSe 11.1 and while it did install and did run a model I had created on Windows correctly, it gave me a lot of "uninitialized" warnings. I don't know if these are significant and so am a little concerned even though my model ran. Any thoughts? The same error appeared with SparseM and lme4. --------------------------------- R CMD INSTALL randomForest_4.5-19.tar.gz * Installing to library

Heads up: panics should be fixed!
As others have noted, Tor's patch appears to be a total solution to the recent instability the PAE patch introduced. So, if you're experiencing panics with a recent kernel, or are in a position to stress a machine, please cvsup and give it a test! Bug#805508: [PATCH] tools: allow configure time choice of libexec subdirectory.
Currently we hardcode various paths such as $libexec/xen/{bin,boot}, however some downstreams (notably Debian) would like instead to install things into $libexec/xen-X.Y/{bin,boot} as part of allowing multiple versions of the tools packages to be installed. Since this currently involves patching configure its a bit fiddly, provide a configure option for the leaf dir instead, name it

RMagick load problems?
I have a page (model: daily_progress_chart) that uses RMagick and ImageMagick to create a chart using RVG. A few days ago (after some updates to Rails), this chart stopped working on both my development machine (MacBook Pro) and the production server (Gentoo Linux). I get the following error messages. I am totally lost, but I assume that there is a problem with RMagick. Any ideas anyone? On

Suggestion: rsync and direct IO
We have some cases when copying indexes that we'd like rsync to avoid the system cache when copying a chunk of data from some other machine. I am probably going to modify our own copy of rsync to do this, but if we could write directly to the disk using direct-io (or from for that matter) we could avoid polluting the operating system's buffer cache before we're ready to use the new

Scaling Puppet 0.22.1 to hunderdes of nodes.
Hi, My environment is composed of ~250 workstations hitting a single puppetmaster server, which has been working fairly well up until now. The most recent change has been a migration of a lot of remote file copy objects which were previously handled with cfengine. client side puppetd calls to the puppetmaster.getconfig method are taking unreasonably long, on the order of 2-3 minutes. It
