ANN: wxRuby 0.2.1 has been released!
This long-awaited version is available from rubyforge:
http://rubyforge.org/projects/wxruby/
The big news, of course, is that it includes binary builds for MS
Windows and Mac OS X Panther. I may add one or more Linux binaries
later, or they may have to wait for 0.3.
This is still an early beta release, so it still has a number of known
problems. If you find a problem that is not mentioned

I hate make
Does anyone else here think that it might be a good idea to shift wxruby
to use rake (http://rubyforge.org/projects/rake/) or perhaps one of the
other "modern" build systems?
One example of a task that would be trivial with rake, but seem to be
really painful with make: Define a tclean target that deletes all the .h
and .cpp files that are built from .t files.

interactive menu in scripts
Hello, I would like to make my R script more interactive. Well, I want the
script to work like this:
I run the script from R Console and it offers me some options (press 1 for
something, or press 2 for something else). After pressing 1 or 2, do
corresponding procedure.
I am not able to find out how to do this. I guess the functions menu() or
switch() are the keys, but I didn't manage to use

RE: wxRuby
STEVE: Yes, wxRuby is being used on OS X. The wxRuby-user''s ML is the best
place to go for help. I''ll cross post this and any responses if you don''t
want to subscribe.
WXRUBY-USERS: Steve is the guy who is working on the One-Click Ruby
Installer for OS X. Can anyone spot what his problem is here?
Thanks,

Re: wxRuby and Unicode
I think so (especially if you build from source), but I''m not 100% sure.
I''ll forward this to the wxRuby user''s ML -- Kevin Smith probably knows.

distance matrix
Hello, I want do get the point to point distance matrix.
Suppose, I have a data frame where the first column is X and second column
is Y coordinate of points.
I define a function dst(x1,y1,x2,y2) to claculate distance between two

and create a matrix of these distances.
Can you give me a little guidance, please? I am

extconf.rb patch
Hi!
Why not automagically delete generated header files like this?
File.open("Makefile","ab+"){|f|
f.puts
f.puts("tclean:; @$(RM) "+(Dir[''*.t''].map{|fn| fn.sub(''.t'',''.h'')}.join))
f.puts
}
Reduces user error :)

Suggestion for wxruby name change
We''ve had some discussion in the past about the wxruby vs wxruby-swig
name, and how they are a bit confusing. My big problem with
''wxruby-swig'' is that unless you know what ''swig'' is, it''s not a
terribly useful (or sexy) postfix. It''s like naming a car after it''s
manufacturing process - "the all new Acura

wxRuby Windows installer available for testing
I have a first cut of a windows installer for wxRuby available for testing.
It can be downloaded with this URL:
http://curthibbs.us/wxruby-mswin-0.2_debug.zip
This installer currently assumes that you have installed Ruby from Andy
Hunt''s one-click Ruby Installer for Windows, *and* that you have installed
it in the default directory (C:\ruby). I still need to figure out how to

News for OS X Users
Sorry things have gone silent on the release front, but I have some good
news: I''ve gotten wxruby-swig to build as a OS X framework. This has a
couple of ramifications
1) wxruby for the Mac will finally exactly like its Linux and PC
counterparts, menu bar and all.
2) Bundling wxruby applications becomes a lot easier.
3) The next binary installer should be able to support darwinports,

instantrails and oneclick
Today I return to Ruby after 12 months. I find I have several
installations, including Ruby 1.9!? Decided to rationlise things a bit
before starting to learn Ruby again from scratch. Rails is hot stuff and
I find I also had an old version of InstantRails (this is an XP
machine... calm down now, it''s all I''ve got (well not quite, but I''ll
come to that later)).

(newbie) Missing Template Error using Rolling With Rails Tutorials
Hi all,
New to the list, Ruby, & RoR. I''ve been going through the Rolling
With Rails tutorial, but am getting the following error when the
instructions tell you to add the @recipes = Recipe.find_all line to
the RecipeController:
Template is missing
Missing template ./script/../config/..//app/views//recipe/index.rhtml
The index.rhtml file is right where it''s supposed to

Another Updated - wxRuby Windows installeravailable for
Hmm everything installed fine but when I try to run the samples I get an
error dialog stating:
"rubyw.exe - unable to Locate Component
This application has failed to start because MSVCRTD.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
Which unless you are supplying the debug microsoft dll''s, re-installing
will have no effect :)

Updated - wxRuby Windows installer available for
Curt,
I just downloaded and tried your installer and the installation went fine. There are problems with the samples not finding their images files, but only when I try to run the samples from their Start menu shortcuts. When I edit the properties of a shortcut, and change the "Start in" folder to match the folder where the sample resides, then the problems go away. (As-installed,

Debug and Release builds of the wxRuby Windows Installer
Ok, I now have both debug and release build installers for wxRuby 0.2 on
windows. As I said in my earlier emails these are designed to install on top
of Andy Hunt''s one-click Ruby Installer for Windows (version 1.8.0).
In the start menu I create a wxRuby group with shortcuts to run the sample
apps and to display "wxRuby Help" (which is just a freshly updated version

RAqua with X11 TclTk
I've built a version of RAqua that uses X11 TclTk and NOT AquaTclTk.
http://www.economia.unimi.it/R/RAquaX11.dmg (15 MB disk image)
The idea is that you: launch RAqua, launch X application (the X
Server), and from inside R type
x11() # just tt set DISPLAY to :0.0. Eventually close this window
device, we don't need this.
