wxruby + GTK2.0
I have a newly-installed Ubuntu linux box that I''m planning to use for
wxruby development (thanks for the advice on remote desktops from this
group). However, turns out that Ubuntu comes with GTK2.0, annd
wxwidgets 2.6 is reportedly better and easier to build than 2.4.2
against this.
Before I set off on a potentially fruitless compiling journey, I was
wondering if anyone had had

Re: Unicode support
How about this: we expose the known conversions of wxMBConv to wxruby
global methods. Then we create a $WXSTRING_TO_RUBY and $RUBY_TO_WXSTRING
globals that has a reference to those procs. In the ruby-string to
wxString typemap, we use ruby to invoke $WXSTRING_TO_RUBY and
$RUBY_TO_WXSTRING. That way, if people want a different method, they can
write one (even a pure-ruby one) that changes the

wxRuby build problems
I''ve just tried to build wxRuby on a debian/unstable (i386) platform.
I went to rubyforge.org and downloaded wxruby-0.5-src.tar.gz.
<http://rubyforge.org/frs/download.php/1254/wxruby-0.5-src.tar.gz>
I have ruby 1.8.2 installed on my system. I needed to install the
debian package ruby1.8-dev in order to get mkmf.rb. That solved my
first problem. So then i ran "ruby

Wx::StaticText
Salut alex.
J''ai une question a propos de wx::statictext(wxruby2)
est-il possible de mettre les accents pour la langue française?, car pour l''instant je ne peut pas mettre l''accentuation alors que ça marche bien avec "wxruby".
merci

As a member (and former leader) of the wxruby team, I thought I would
share the state of the wxruby world.
The current release is 0.6, and it has

installing from src on OS X
Hi
I''ve built WxWidgets (2.5.4) and wxruby-swig (CVS) from source on OS X
(.3). I''ve got something called wx.bundle in lib/ that looks the right
sort of size - 2.5MB - but I don''t know what to do with it to install it
- no rake install or make install?
btw - wx on OS X looks fantastic, esp after seeing a Tk interface inside
Aqua this am ...
cheers

CentOS 6 + nux-dextop: GIMP vs. GIMP 2.8 ?
Hi,
I just setup a CentOS 6 desktop with the nux-dextop repository activated.
When installing GIMP (yum install gimp), I get a gimp package as well as
a gimp28 package. I understand this is the Nux-Dextop GIMP 2.8 package.
Unfortunately this doesn't work so well with my system. It's not
localized (menus appear in english, though the system is in French), the
main GTK theme (Murrina

Unicode support in FXRuby 1.6
All,
As some of you know, Jeroen has added support for Unicode strings in
the unstable development version of FOX (version 1.5). I''m trying to
plan ahead to decide how best to support this for FXRuby 1.6, but I
don''t really know anything about Ruby''s support for Unicode or i18n in
general. If you''re familiar with this topic (how/if Ruby deals with

wxruby.so error with weft-qda
Dear wxruby users
I''ve been trying to get wxruby-based weft-qda 0.9.6 running on a linux from
scratch 6.1 system (this list had a discussion about weft-qda last year and
alex fenton''s also been trying to help me out - no luck so far).
I get stuck with wxruby 0.60 (I think). I compiled wxruby against wxGTK 2.4.2
(without gtk2, without unicode - gtk+ version is 1.2.10) - after

rspec runner setting $KCODE considered harmful?
I ran across a problem today in which some code ran fine in regular
operation but failed in a test case. I scratched my head and thought "why
would running from within the test harness change the behavior of my code?"
Clearly it was the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in action! :)
I discovered the root cause was that the rspec runner is setting the magical
ruby global, $KCODE, to

unicode hacks - fixes for webrick and Safari
Hello!
First, thank you Julian for the useful plugin ''unicode_hacks'' <
http://julik.textdriven.com/svn/tools/rails_plugins/unicode_hacks/>.
I have found some problems running my app in development on Webrick
and looking at it with Safari (MacOS X 10.4.3, Safari 2.0.2). Some
files are sent with different sizes (e.g. default css example, or
controls.js ), and it

win32-dir, unicode
Hi,
I''ve got a preliminary version of the pure Ruby version of win32-dir in
CVS. However, I was hoping to work out the Unicode issue. Run this:
from = "C:\\test"
to = "?????"
Dir.mkdir(from) unless File.exists?(from)
Dir.create_junction(to, from)
It works, but my explorer (and dos) window shows the name garbled. I
don''t think it''s a font

Increased memory requirements on 1.2
I just recently upgraded a rails app of mine to run on edge (and the
1-2-pre-release branch) and I noticed my fcgis required roughly 6-8MBs
more memory after just a couple requests.
For example, each fcgi on edge would start around 40MB and rise to
~46MBs after a couple requests.
I downgraded my app back to 1.1.6 and each fcgi would start at around
33MBs and rise to ~38MB.
As a result of the

Grid.GetTextExtent
Wow. Look what SWIG does to GetTextExtent in Grid.cpp:
void SwigDirector_wxGrid::GetTextExtent(wxString const &string, int *x,
int *y, int *descent, int *externalLeading, wxFont const *font) const {
...
if (swig_get_up()) {
wxWindow::GetTextExtent(string,x,y,descent,externalLeading,font);
return;
}
obj0 = rb_str_new2((const char *)(&string)->mb_str());
