package.skeleton() in R-2.4.1
Hi
R version 2.4.0 alpha (2006-09-06 r39158)
MacOSX 10.4.7
There was a thread some time ago as to whether the structure created by
package.skeleton() would pass R CMD check.
I have an example where package.skeleton() gives an R file that gives an
error when sourced.
If I type
setClass("brob",
representation = representation

How to reduce key strokes when defining S4 classes?
I feel tedious when I define a S4 class and the methods. For each
method, I have to call both setMethod and setGeneric (or both
setReplaceMethod and setGeneric). I would like a more compact grammar
so that I can reduce the key strokes. I'm wondering if there is a
better way available.

Class='A',
representation=representation(
x='numeric'

Hi the list,
I am writing a function in which I need to affect a variable on a higher
level. My fnction could be:

fooBis <- function(x){
nameObject <- deparse(substitute(x))
print(nameObject)
assign(nameObject,4,envir=parent.frame())
}
> fooBis(e)

Problems with definitions of S4-generics
Hello all,
I'd like to report a problem related to S4 classes.
Platform:
Mac G4/400 PCI (PPC-architecture)
Mac OS 10.4.8
R 2.4.1 for Mac OS X (CRAN binary, 2006-12-19) w/ R.app 1.18
Last December, Simon Urbanek confirmed that the issue is not platform
related, and that it is most likely a bug. He suggested to post my report
to "the appropriate mailing list" -- I choose r-devel.

Tidiest way of modifying S4 classes?
I wish to make modifications to the plot.pedigree function in the
kinship package. My attempts to contact the maintainer have been
unsuccessful, but my question is general, so specifics of the kinship
package might not be an issue.
My first attempt was to make a new function Plot.pedigree in the
.GlobalEnv which mostly achieved what I wanted to. However, I'm sure
that's not the tidiest

default arguments in generics and methods
i believe the following is true but would appreciate confirmation
that it is intended behavior and will continue:
if a default argument is employed in the definition of a generic
function, and the generic is called with the argument in question
(call it 'ARG') missing, then the method for signature (..., ARG =
"missing", ...) will be called by 'standardGeneric'

dots methods: dispatch issues
There seems to be a bug arising when using multiple S4 generics with "..."
as the signature.
The following code works as expected:

standardGeneric("rbind"),
+ signature = "...")

R.oo data members / inheritance
If someone is able, can you tell me if there is a better way to do this?
More specifically, do I have to rewrite all of the data members stuff and
extend stuff of parent class in the child class? See below. Thanks in
advance!
Example 1:
setConstructorS3("ClassA", function(A,x) {
if(missing(A))A=15;
if(missing(x))x=NA;
extend(Object(), "ClassA",
.size = A,
.x=x

S4 methods for rbind()
Hello.
I am trying to write an S4 method for rbind(). I have a class of objects
called 'mdm', and I want to be able to rbind() them to one another.
I do not want the method for rbind() to coerce anything to an mdm object.
I want rbind(x1,x2,x1,x2) to work as expected [ie rbind() should take any
number of arguments].
This is what I have so far:
setGeneric(".rbind_pair",

trouble with S4 methods for group "Summary"
Hello. This question concerns the Methods package. I have created a
new class and am trying to set a method for it for S4 group generic
"Summary". I have run into some signature problems. An example:
> setClass("track", representation(x="numeric", y="character"))
[1] "track"
> setGeneric("max", group="Summary")

S4 package warning
Hello everyone. R-2.12.0, suse linux 11.3.
I am debugging a package that uses S4 methods
and R CMD check gives the following warning:

> non-generic function 'mdm' given to findMethods()

dispatching on group generics with more than one formal
please see the code below. foo2 fails to dispatch correctly, but foo
does fine. i have tried 'cacheMetaData(1)' and a number of different
variants of 'cacheGenericsMetaData', on the possibility there is a
caching issue. but i still can't sort it out.
also one general question: does it really matter what's in the body

Default arguments for setMethod() (PR#8021)
Full_Name: Bert Gunter
Version: 2.1.1
OS: Windows 2000
Submission from: (NULL) (192.12.78.250)
There appears to be either a bug or documentation problem in
setMethod/setGeneric with how default arguments are handled. The setMethod Help
says:
******
Method definitions can have default expressions for arguments. If those
arguments are then missing in the call to the generic function, the default

S4 classes and methods with optional arguments
Hi,
i have used S4 classes to implement a unified access to random number generators
(package rstream on CRAN).
I have used a construct to allow optional arguments:
if(!isGeneric("rstream.sample"))
setGeneric("rstream.sample", function(stream,...) standardGeneric("rstream.sample"))
setMethod("rstream.sample",

S4 Method Signatures
Hello,
If the signature of a method defines which generic it implements then I'm confused about why this minimal example I invented won't work :

setGeneric("myFun", function(cs, ...){standardGeneric("myFun")})
setMethod("myFun", "numeric", function(rs, colour =

S4 and head() problems
Hi
I am having difficulty defining an S4 method for head() and tail().
I can't quite provide minimal self-contained code
because the problem appears to require the whole corpus
of my package; and there also appears to be a difference
between sourcing the lines directly, and having them
installed in a package.
The lines in question (I think) are:

Problem with generic methods
Hi
I want to create a new generic method, but I end up with an error
(evaluation nested too deeply). see the transcript below.
The function beginYear.Fun() works, but not beginYear.
I have no idea why.
Any ideas welcome,

S4 problems
Hello everybody
[R-2.12.1]
I am having difficulty dealing with Oarray objects.
I have a generic function, call it foo(), and I wish
to define a method for Oarray objects.
I do not have or want a method for regular arrays [actually,
I want to coerce to an Oarray, and give a warning].
But setMethod() does not behave as desired, giving
an error message when I try to define a method for
Oarray

S4 group "Math", "getGroupMembers", "genericForPrimitive"
Hi,
I found the following on Windows 2000/NT
R Version 1.9.1 (2004-06-21) (also Version 1.9.0):
The S4 group "Math" doesn't work as documented; i.e., "log", "log10",
"gamma" and "lgamma" are included
in the documentation but don't work. See example code below.
Moreover, what about 'genericForPrimitive' which is used
in
