R-alpha: Can we "require" 1) GNU make, 2) Perl -- for help "compiling"?
Another request for comments (the last one on file extensions had not too many 'voters' ...) Both questions have to do with improving the 'man' file format, conventions, .. AND building the 'help', 'latex' and 'html' files from the man sources. Before you read on.. Kurt Hornik has suggested that in any case, the compiled 'help', 'html'

1.2 R CMD check
I've taken a quick look at the 1.2 snapshot to see what is coming. Is it my imagination or is it quite a bit faster? I noticed that "R CMD check" now seems to do much more: install, check examples, check dvi (&pdf?). I think it is great to have this kind of comprehensive check of a package, especially once everything in the package is suppose to be working. But when I am still

bash help please
I'd like to make MikTeX the default TeX package in 2.2.0, but we still need to let people use other packages. The problem is that MikTeX wants a command line option --include-directory $R_HOME/share/texmf, while other packages specify includes via environment variables, and barf when they see the unexpected option. The choice should be controlled by the user's settings in the MkRules

R-beta: updating the library index / overriding compile options
Would it be possible to include a new command in the ${RHOME}/etc path, which updates the Library index (Rd and html) via "R LIBINDEX". I need it because I use RPM to manage three different R installations (at home, at the institute and in the seminar rooms). I put all libraries into several packages, so it is easy for me to update a single library at all these different places. But

Problems with "help(topic,offline=T)"
Hello everybody, since I installed R-0.90.0 (Linux 2.0.25) I have problems with generating printable output with 'help()'. Default output to the terminal ('echo $PAGER' gives 'less') works o.k.. When invoking 'help(topic, offline=T)' all the usual procedures seem to start: 'top' reports invocation of latex as well as of dvips. But after finishing there is

Possible R CMD check problem (PR#3070)
Using R 1.7.0 I get * checking parcv-manual.tex ... ERROR Could not create DVI version. Although there is no apparent error. The dvi file exists. Possibly there is some problem with my TeX setup, but the following messages don't suggest that either. Here's the full log, which does show some documentation issues: sheep:~$R CMD check --library=.R/library/ src/parcv * checking for working

Sweave, R and complex latex projects
Hello all, I've been able to use R very successfully to run simple statistics and generate the plots I require. I've been evaluating Sweave, and have hit upon a small problem that I don't seem to be able to workaround. Sweave runs very well for single file latex documents, but I have a complex thesis made up of several parts and chapters. These are arranged with a master latex file

Using R (version 0.63.3) for MS windows, I try the following command > shell(paste("cd ",getenv("RHOME"),sep="")) which replies with an error message Too many parameters - FILES\RW0633 which appears to suggest that the space if the path name is causing difficulties to the cd command. getenv returns > getenv("RHOME") RHOME

building a package
Dear R-helpers, I'm learning how to compile R packages with fortran routines and use the acepack source as an example. After some hiccups (Guido told me about the need to set make_mode=UNIX) I got to the following: `make pkg-acepack' runs without error (see below), but it does not * compile any .f file in acepack/src * (hence) try to create any dll file or libs (I'm

R-alpha: R-0.49: 2 problems
I found the following 2 problems (no debugging, sorry). * qt(0.975, 3) never returns. Can someone please check that? Happens for me on Debian GNU/Linux/ix86 compiled with CFLAGS="-O2 -g". * Yet another stupid way to cause a segfault: R> x Error: Object "x" not found R> debug(t.test) R> t.test(rnorm(10)) debug: choices <- c("two.sided",

building rpy against lenny-cran
Hi. On all of my machines, except for a netbook cursed with the GMA500 chipset, the R packages are synced to lenny-cran. I have been using rpy in a chroot using the official lenny R packages (2.7.1) given that i have not been able to find compatible rpy deb packages to work with lenny-cran. I am able to build the rpy deb package from source in a 32-bit lenny chroot (with the stock R packages)

R-alpha: data in contributed packages
I know, we've discussed this several times in the good old days days of the R-testers list :-), but the problem is still unsolved. I want to include Tibshirani's data in my port of the bootstrap package, but we still have no way of including data in a clean way. IMHO we should have a subdirectory of $RHOME/data for each library, e.g. $RHOME/data/base $RHOME/data/bootstrap Actually

R-alpha: a question on terminology
Whereas we typically refer to the add-on `modules' as `libraries' (viz also the way these are represented in the search list, and the variable .Libraries), S speaks about `sections'. Shall we stay with our terminology? Or instead, speak of `sections', `packages', `modules', ...? -k =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- r-devel

R-alpha: generic write()
Attached is a first shot at a generic write with my `old' write.table as write.data.frame, suitably modified. There is also a stupid generic latex function, which is just there because it illustrates that the extra arguments sep and eol are useful. In playing with it, I noticed a few `problems'. * The documentation for factor() says, If exclude is set to a zero length vector, then any

R-alpha: Rprofiles
The x11() window can be a nuisance to have popping up at startup (esp. on small screens) when you're not working with graphics. However, currently you can't get rid of it without modifying the systemwide Rprofile. Current logic is: Run $RHOME/library/Rprofile if ./.Rprofile exists run it else if $HOME/.Rprofile exists run that endif I think it should be Run $RHOME/library/Rsetup if
