character vector as input to function?
I would like to have a function that inputs a file name, then reads that data file and does various stuff to it. Something like: doit<-function(filename) { x<-scan("~/rstuff/data/"filename) #for example, if filename is a0.dat, it will scan("~/rstuff/data/a0.dat") ... } Can someone please tell me how to do this? Thanks for any help! Bill Simpson

vector of NA indices
I have a vector Pes with 600 elements some of which are NA's. How can I form a vector of the indices of the NA's. for(i in 1:600) if(is.na(Pes[i])) print(i) prints the indices of the NA's but I can't figure out how to put the results in a vector. Thank you very much. Peter B. -- Peter B. Mandeville mandevip at deimos.tc.uaslp.mx Jefe del Depto. de

R-beta: patch 2
Perhaps I missed something obvious, but when I applied patch 2 and then recompiled R-0.49, I found that the objects such as glm.fit that were supposed to be updated still had their original definitions. After some hair-pulling, I remembered that patch saves a backup copy of the original files it changes. Because of the way the makefile for the system database is structured, both the new files and

R or S+ !
Hi all ! I'm sure this is a question that annoys some of you but I'm really needing help on this ! I've been using R for about 1 year now. I'm a biologist, so stats are a tool for my research not the end itself. During this time I've enjoyed working with R but the graphical part of it drives me crazy and the small possibilities in terms of reading some file formats also

margins with postscript device
I've been having a problem when printing plots to a HP DeskJet 2500C printer. This printer, like most inkjet printers, has a large minimum bottom margin. For most HP inkjet printers, the bottom 1/2" (left 1/2" inch for landscape) of the page can't be printed too. The postscript device in R has a default of 1/4" margins between the paper edge and the plotting area. This

R-beta: trouble compiling 0.62.3 on SunOS 4.1.4: lgamma conflicts
I've recently tried to get 0.62.3 up on our Suns (4.1.4, using gcc; I'm also having trouble with a Solaris 2.6 compile but I haven't given up hope on that one yet) -- the last compile I did was 0.61.1, which worked smoothly. Running ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apps/R/R-0.62.3 [--with-g77] (tried both with and without g77, eventually get to the same place), I get a conflict

Can someone please have a look at this query on stackoverflow?
Dear Olivier, Many thanks for your reply. Very cool. You know what I thought ? I thought you had modified the A4 sheet size to compute the paperheight and paperwidth ? I wonder if that's another way of proceeding. Dear Olivier, Many thanks for your reply. This works well for me. How did you come up with the pagewidth / pageheight numbers? I do understand that their ratio = 16:9, but how did you choose these numbers? R-beta: quantile
I do: x<-rnorm(1000) quantile(x,c(.025,.975)) 2% 98% -1.844753 1.931762 Since I want to find a 95% confidence interval, I take the .025 and .975 quantiles. HOWEVER R says I have the 2% (not 2.5%) and 98% (not 97.5%) points. Is it just rounding the printed 2% and 98%, or is it REALLY finding .02 and .98 points instead of .025 and .975? Thanks for any help. Bill Simpson

Dear Ashim, I don't think the aspectratio is appropriate in this context because it would imply that the beamer (LaTeX) class is used but you're actually using the article (LaTeX) class. You may use specifications of the geometry package rather than specifying options to the class: e.g. replace your current header: --- title: "Testing landscape and aspect ratio" output:

Can someone please have a look at this query on stackoverflow?
Dear Ashim, these are documented in the LaTeX 'geometry' package (see for example on CTAN: https://ctan.org/pkg/geometry). As I added in my response on Stackoverflow, several parts in the RMarkdown header actually concern information that are processed by LaTeX to actually generate the PDF, among which the 'geometry' line. For someone who is used to working with LaTeX, it is

And indeed again (I did not understand your previous question exactly at first), the 'hard-coded' definition of a landscape a4 sheet would therefore be: paperwidth=29.7cm, paperheight=21cm Olivier. In Version 0.64.1 (May 8, 1999), Solaris 2.5.1, expression(theta^{-}) and expression(theta^{+}) (and the equivalent subscripts) give syntax errors. (Superscript or subscripts of numbers, letters, or "+1" or "-1" all work.) Anyone have a workaround or a patch? Or should I just use psfrag as god intended? Ben Benjamin Bolker Dep't

xfig device
Hi, I am VERY interested in getting the xfig driver so that I can edit graphical output from R. Searching through the mail archives and reading documentation isn't helping. Is there or isn't there a working driver for this purpose. How can I get it? I tried looking at the development version of the tarballs, but I didn't find anything that looked promising in there. Also, does

R-alpha: line types
Responding to my own post, after some hacking: To fix the behavior of the following test code (the rect()s inherit the lty set by the previous abline())-- x _ (1:100)/10 plot(x,sin(x)) abline(h=0,lty=2,col="red") rect(1,0,2,0.5) abline(v=2) rect(3,0,4,0.5) Here are some diffs (now all I have to do is wade through and get lwd working properly ...) *** devX11.c.orig Tue Jul 29
