nested mixed-effect model: variance components
Dear listers,
I am trying to assess variance components for a nested, mixed-effects
model. I think I got an answer that make sense from R, but I have a
warning message and I wanted to check that what I am looking at is
actually what I need:
my data are organized as transects within stations, stations within
habitats, habitats within lagoons.
lagoons: random, habitats: fixed

system reboots after shutdown
Hi all,
When i want to shutdown my laptop (the result is the
same from command line as from gdm), screen gets
blank, but computer restarts.
APM is disabled (this laptop doesn't support it),
and disabling ACPI is no solution, because it controls
the fan.
Kernel version is 2.6.9-11.EL and CPU is Pentium
Centrino. Laptop is an AIRIS 840.
I use different distros (ubuntu, debian and

[OT] "Dispersion" in French
Greetings,
I'm posting this OT query here because of out very international
membership!
In the French sentence
"Les taux de tirage sont calcul??s de mani??re ?? ce que la
dispersion soit inf??rieure ?? 5 % dans chaque strate."
it would seem intended that the "dispersion" is to be calculated
in a specific way (unstated) -- otherwise, how to ensure that it

Call Queues
Hi everyone:
I've searching for a while and haven't found what i
need.
The thing is that i have a tdm422p with the two fxo
ports connected to the pstn. I want my sip users to be
able to call other numbers(any number) in the pstn
through my zap fxo channels. I have a big number of
sip users so as you can imagine there will be
congestion when some of them(more than two!!) want to

The 'test.terms' argument in 'regTermTest' in package 'survey'
This is a question regarding the 'regTermTest' function in the 'survey' package. Imagine Z as a three level factor variable, and code ZB and ZC as the two corresponding dummy variables. X is a continuous variable. In a 'glm' of Y on Z and X, say, how do the two test specifications
test.terms = c("ZB:X","ZC:X") # and
test.terms = ~ ZB:X + ZC:X

question about cloud() in lattice package
Hi all,
I have been previously been using scatterplot3d package to create some graphs but unfortunately it does not allow me to rotate the
plot on all three axis. The cloud() function in the lattice package does allow me to do so. When I was using scatterplot3d I was
using a script (Shown Below) to calculate the mean, quartiles and range limits for all three axis and I was representing that on the

polychoric correlation with multiple imputations, a Strate and a Weight
Hi there,
I'm generally more a Stata user than a R user, but I need to computed
something, and I am not able to do it with Stata 13. So, here I am!
I have a database that has multiple imputations (imputations are already
done) with a complex sample design (Strate and Weight).
Is it possible, in R, to run polychoric correlation with multiple
imputation, a Strate and a Weight ?

Users are sometimes surprised by the value returned, for example why
(-8)^(1/3) is NaN. For double inputs, R makes use of IEC 60559

Random number generator used in 'runif'
Dear list,
For the implementation of a particular optimization algorithm it is
very important the random number generator.
I would like to know if somebody could tell me what is the random
number generator used by default in the 'runif' function.

default algorithm is 'Mersenne-Twister', but I

limitations to random number generator in 64-bits machines
Dear List,
Recently I got the comment that the implementation of the random number
generator used by default in R (Mersenne-Twister) could not be "safe"
for 64-bits machines, so I decided to put the question here because I do
not have expertise in that topic, and because this question could be
"too technical for R-help's audience". I apologise if this is not the case.

Changing a value in a particular row and column within a text file
Dear list,
I need to change a value within a particular line of a plain text file
with characters and numbers, and I haven't found any way of doing this
by using R.
What I have a is a file that doesn't have tabular data (so, I think
that 'read.table' or 'read.delim' are not the right tools for this),
but some text, and I now exactly the row that has to be modified and
