get_client_data
As a first stab at understanding swig''s mem mgmt features, I tried to
fix get_client_data, using Wx::Choice as a testbed.
The attached patch resolves the immediate crasher with this function
(which was b/c the typemap for void* isn''t right for this method). It
also uses the %markfunc feature to prevent objects that are set as
client data from being GC''d. The

TreeCtrl item_data
The attached fixes set_item_data, get_item_data and some other methods
for the TreeCtrl so they work nicely with Ruby objects and GC.
In C++ Wx TreeCtrl item_data works differently from client_data in
classes derived from ControlWithItems (eg Choice, ListCtrl). A
one-to-one mapping of the way TreeCtrl works would mean that you would
have to derive a class from TreeItemData, and instantiate

ControlsWithItems get_client_data
This patch rolls out the support for get_client_data to ComboBox and
ListBox. It also moves a bit more stuff into shared code.
One slightly interesting bit is a unit test to go with it. Gets round
the slightly tricky problem that all GUI code needs to run within an
App#on_init loop, but that entering that loop blocks and prevents a unit
test running normally. So TestApp runs a unit test from

memory leaks
Have tracked down a fairly serious cause of memory leakage in wxRuby2.
swig/fixdeleting.rb adds a hash mapping from pointer address to ruby
VALUE in every director initialiser using GcMapPtrToValue.
The problem is that being a value in this global hash means that every
Wx::Bitmap (for example, and others) are always marked in ruby''s GC mark
phase, so they are never collected until

0.0.36 tagged and released
Hi
I''m pleased to let you know that wxruby2-preview 0.0.36 is now available
on Rubyforge. Binary gems to follow...
To check out a clean copy from SVN and build from source:
svn co svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/wxruby/tags/wxruby2/0.0.36
cd 0.0.36
rake gem WXRUBY_VERSION=0.0.36
From my reading of SVN docs it''s probably wise for developers to
checkout anonymously as a bit of

Wxruby2 gemspec
Hi
A gemspec for installation of wxuby-swig via rubygems. It assumes the
end-users will compile the pre-swigged .cpp files & that that the main
require file will be wx.rb (as per Kevin''s suggestion). runrake.rb is
just a helper script that runs rake correctly within the rubygems
installation process.

gem build wxruby2.gemspec

Wx::Window#get_text_extent patch
Here''s a patch to fix Wx::Window#get_text_extent - it requires that the
patches from teh last message are applied, to enable *INPUT etc typemaps.
Roy - though the function works correctly when called from Ruby, it
still causes a crash when called internally when clicking on a Wx::Grid
cell. Saw your message on SWIG mailing list, hopefully someone there can
help out.

doc generator now in CVS
Hi
Just a quick note to let you know that the Textile doc generation stuff
is now in CVS. There is a moderate amount of documentation in
rake/rakedoc.rb in case you feel like generating your own local copy.
The only prerequisite is the Ruby ''redcloth'' library.
There''s also some info in doc/lib which might be some help if you want
to tweak the output.
cheers

announcement
Hi
Now we''ve got the download problems nailed, shall we do an announcement
on comp.lang.ruby? I can do it if you''re really busy, but Kevin I think
you have first refusal as you''re owed the biggest chunk of kudos for
getting us this far.
re patch backlog: no worries - just clearing the decks before having
another go at integrating wxScintilla - but I can''t

next steps - public alpha?
Seems the gems and tarball have been downloaded a bit with no reported
problems. I suggest we do an alpha release incorporating Roy''s useful
recent fixes and announce it more publicly e.g. on the mailing list.
It''s not perfect, but again we have made a lot of progress since late
July and we should build on it; it was our dev goal. I now personally
have to put some effort

new crasher on bigdemo
Hi
Seems that the last round of commits makes bigdemo crash fairly quickly.
Guessing it''s something to do with either the Window or fixmodule change.
Program received signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS, Could not access memory.

tagged 0.0.37; release plans
Hi
I just tagged 0.0.37 in Subversion. I also added a note on the Wiki on
how to do this, and how to checkout a clean version:
http://wxruby.rubyforge.org/wiki/wiki.pl?Release_HowTo
For the build, I''m just about to upload a tarball, and will add a
powerpc gem once the compiler''s chugged away. Please upload for your
platform as you''re ready.
I suggest we announce

wxruby.so error with weft-qda
Dear wxruby users
I''ve been trying to get wxruby-based weft-qda 0.9.6 running on a linux from
scratch 6.1 system (this list had a discussion about weft-qda last year and
alex fenton''s also been trying to help me out - no luck so far).
I get stuck with wxruby 0.60 (I think). I compiled wxruby against wxGTK 2.4.2
(without gtk2, without unicode - gtk+ version is 1.2.10) - after

Installation success, execution failed
Hello, after I wasn''t able to install wxruby via gem (404) I
downloaded the file from rubyforge and installed it on my intel mac.
No failure the so I tried to start the minimal.rb with ruby -r/r?/
ubegems <path>...
This didn''t work so I tried to do it in irb but the same error occured:
