acts_as_ferret and searching word docs
I was wondering if it is possible to search word documents using ferret.
The actual text in a word document isn''t in a binary format - only the
formatting. Surely it would be possible to parse that?

antiword
Hi guys,
I've been noticing more and more that antiword has trouble with many
word documents.
It may look like it's converted a document but leaves out headings and
bits of text.
I've been looking into getting openoffice to do it in headless mode but
still have a way to go before it's stable.
I was wondering if anyone else had any luck on this front?
One quick fix I have found

Convert RTF to ANSI color codes
Anyone have a script or utility to convert an RTF file to ANSI? The
main idea here is to preserve the color codes that are specified in
the RTF file, so they can be displayed easily in a terminal window.

Abiword as test of Wine
One problem with Wine has been that there were few
serious open source win32 applications out there to
test Wine with (ok, maybe my opinions are from 1997 :-)
In any case, we have some great open source Win32 applications
to test with. AbiWord is one.
I just tried installing AbiWord 0.9 under the latest
Codeweavers preview. The install worked -- but generated
about a billion warnings of the

Centos 6.3 - which repos to use?
I've just installed v6.3 as a desktop (from
Centos-6.3-i386-LiveCD.iso) and to get the hang of the Centos approach
and then hope to move on to a server. I've been using linux *buntu for
5 years.
Hope i don't sound like a nit but i've got a little confused with the
repos. Hoping someone would be kind enough just to clarify. This
installation is for stability whilst installing the

Indexing Elements of a Dataframe
Hello List-Members,
Let's say that I have the following code:

SHA256 password patch
Hi,
I made a patch against branch-1.0 for SHA256 password hashing support
for Dovecot.
Courier Authlib supports this hashing scheme and in order to migrate
from Courier to Dovecot, I've added SHA256 support to Dovecot.
The attached patch is based on BSD licensed code from Olivier Gay
(http://www.ouah.org/ogay/sha2/).
Changes made by me in Olivier's sha2{.h,.c} code:

Open Office install
The latest version of Open Office in the db is 3.0.1 and it says to

The version I am downloading to install is 3.1.0, does anyone know if I
still need to install cabextract first for that version?

Three-dimensional contingency table
Hi,
I am trying to assemble a three-way contingency table examining the presence/absence of mussels, water depth (Depth1 and Depth 2) and water velocity (Flow vs. No Flow). I have written the following code listed below; however, when run the glm I get the following message, "Error in model.frame.default(formula = Count ~ MP + wd + wv, drop.unused.levels = TRUE) : variable lengths differ

plotting two variables with a third used for color
I have a problem where I have two columns of data that I can simply plot using:
plot(wV[0:15,3],wY[0:15,3]).
This produces my desired plot.
Now, say I have a third variable that I would like to introduce and use that variable to set different colors in the plot
In this case, say I wanted values greater than 0 to be "blue" and values less than 0 to be "red"
Basically, my

Newb needs help with Lotus Ami Pro
Hi, folks.
I'm new to both Ubuntu Linux and Wine.
I've been running Lotus Ami Pro for years under Windows 98 and have about 70MB of Ami Pro files. Nowadays, though, printers are not made to support Windows 98 anymore.
I had heard about WINE, and rather than buy another Microsoft product, I decided to see if I could run Ami Pro under another OS. My new printer works perfectly under

Psych can't load LaTeX entities file
Hi there,
I wanted to use RedCloth with my RubyOnRails 3 application, but it seems
that RoR uses 1.9.2''s Psych by default as the YAML parser if available,
and Psych fails to load the LaTeX entities file:

[slightly off topic] Sweave with markdown
DeaR list,
Has anyone tried to mix the Sweave paradigm with the Markdown[*] (and
co.) syntax? Would this be hard to implement? My tiny understanding
of Sweave is that one can define new drivers for the text part, while
some functions that deal with the R code would not require any
modification. Here's the reason I'm interested in Mardown for a driver.

JDataFrame API
Hi Folks,
If you need to send data from Java to R you may consider using the
JDataFrame API -- which is used to convert data into JSON which then
can be converted into a data frame in R.
Here's the project page:
https://coherentlogic.com/middleware-development/jdataframe/
and here's a partial example which demonstrates what the API looks like:
String result = new JDataFrameBuilder()

In the expresso function, which combination of these methods for data pre-processing (when using affymetrix oligo arrays) is the best:

pmcorrect.method = pmonly subtractmm mas
summary.method = liwong avgdiff medianpolish mas
There are many options within each method. I would appreciate a hint on the best
