java-1.4.2-gcj-compat.i386 update failure
Hmmm,
I seemed to have created a misalignmnet somewhere along the line. I
can't remember doing anything to this. But at one time I did try to test
the java open source. Posted my results to the list, got no response,
abandoned all hope and went on my merry way. I don't know if this is
related.
I have installed an rpm for a java needed by an application I run. It

JPackage, Java 1.5.0, and CentOS 5?
Hey, y'all.
I don't know how many folks here are familiar with a blogging program
called 'pebble' http://pebble.sourceforge.net, but it's *supposed* to be
an easy drop-in to a tomcat5 container. I suppose that it is, once I
figured out how to get tomcat 5 working in CentOS 5, but I'm still
having problems with the java.
CentOS comes with Java 1.4.2, but I need Java

xml-commons-jaxp-1.3-apis for Freemind?
I am working on installing Freemind
(http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) on my new
notebook. And it is not working... I downloaded all the rpms and put
them into my local repo, enabled the jpackages repos then, well here is
what is happening:
yum install freemind* jcalendar* jgoodies-forms*

Struggling with javac
I've installed jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586.rpm and Tomcat.
Working through some initial test install programs, I am finding that I
can't seem to compile .java files into classes.
For instance...
javac -classpath /usr/local/tomcat/common/lib/servlet.jar HelloWorld.java
as instructed fails with a
gij: unrecognized option -- `-classpath'
Try `gij --help' for more information.

When I try to install a package I built myself (java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.16-1jpp.x86_64.rpm - took the java-1.6.0 srpm from jpackage and bumped the version number), it complains:

rpm spec file for "fakejava"
Interestingly, i just posted to the list a similar SPEC file.
look at the thread on CGI.pm.
I've attached my spec file for "fakejava" as well.
It was a lot of trial and error to make it work. None of the
documentation I could find was for modern versions of RPM, and IIRC the
documentation i did find for older versions was incorrect somehow.
I think I had to specify a source

Installing Java 7 on a system with Java 6
My system is 5.6, with upgrades. I installed Java 6 from the Centos
repository. It doesn't seem to have Java 7. I need the development
package. How can I install Java 7 development safely? I imagine I will
first have to uninstall Java 6.
Thanks,
John

Setting up Tomcat as a service under CentOS 4?
I've found about a dozen different ways to skin this cat (no pun
intended). Everything from creating a script in /etc/init.d/ to using
jsvc. I was hoping someone out there, those of you out there who run
Tomcat in this manner, how did *you* set this up? I can't seem to get it
right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or even direction to an
authoritative document.

Java headaches
I lost my harddrive, and have had to reinstall. This time, I am being a
bit smarter on imaging, but still got to get things installed...
Installing Freemind. It needs Java JRE.
So after lots of pain, and reading past messages, I got
jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm from sun and installed it.
Then I tried to follow Jim Perrin's recommendation to install from

CentOS 5 and Java
Hi,
I just installed CentOS 5 on a few machines, to experiment with it. I
have some trouble installing a Java plugin for Firefox. I've searched
through the forum and read the various info at jpackage.org, and I'm a
bit confused.
1) Can you point me to some reliable bit of information, even if it's
laconic?
2) If I understand the info on http://jpackage.org/yum.php correctly,

tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp
Is anyone running tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2-
sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp ?
I'm getting weird dependencies which don't make sense, notably:
Error: Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_02-fcs is needed by package
java-1.5.0-sun-compat
I want to use 1.4.2 not 1.5 and it doesn't make sense to have jdk =
2000:1.5.0_02-fcs, unless I'm missing something? I do have

tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp
Is there any documentation telling you whether tomcat5 was compiled
against the 1.4.2 tree or the 1.5?
You could try downloading the srpm, patching it to use the 1.4.2 java
and then re-create your own rpm.
Just a thought, might be an easier way though; will wait for the experts
response.

how do I make my headset work
How do I make my headset work.
Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work
with arecord and aplay.
VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers.
though not in my headset yet.
I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset.
As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and
the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer.

mirrors down?
Just went to update a couple systems this morning, and first one machine
took nearly 15 min to find the mirrors (and it should be getting it all
from our own repo, actually), and then the next one showed about 8-10
mirrors down, including Harvard and VCU. Anyone know what's going on?
