Samba -> WinXP: slow transfers, partial solution
Hello All,
I'm running Samba 3.0.24 as PDC and file server on Gentoo Linux,
AMD64, 2.6.19 kernel, 100MBit/s network, and experience quite slow
file transfers from Samba to WinXP SP2 clients: the speed is varying,
but is about 1-2Mb/s at best.
I spent quite some time investigating the issue, here are the
intermediate results:
1) This happens only when transferring _from_ _Samba_ to

My goal it to shape the traffic coming from one machine (pc1) to another machine (pc2) throught the "eth0" interface. My test configuration is as follows:

String overflow with random characters
Hi, I've got a problem with a 2.2.2 samba server. It has, a number of times,
recorded the following lines for a short period of time of 10 seconds, and
then not again for days. Has anyone seen these before? It all appears to be
random characters. It has only happened from 2 machines out of 30 or so.

newbie's question : xyplot legend with a white background
Hello,
Sorry in advance for adding a silly question on this forum but I haven't
found the right keywords to find a solution to this basic problem.
I'm just looking a way to have a white background behind the legend to hide
the grid.
Thanks in advance.
The silly example for my silly question:
xyplot(1~1,
panel = function(x,y, ...) {
panel.xyplot(x,y)

Thanks Rowland - adding --cross-ncs worked and I can now see the schema
extensions using ldbedit.
I can confirm that my schema extensions are definitely present, including
as mentioned in the record below, which I

Files exist, but sometimes are not seen by the clients: "No such file or directory"
Hello all,
We're having problems with files that suddenly stop being seen on the fuse clients.
I couldn't yet find a way to reproduce this. It happens every once in a while.
Sometimes you try to ls some file and it can't be found.
When you run ls on the parent directory, it is shown on the output, and, after that, you can access it.
I'm mentioning ls, but the problem also

Observing nasty crashes
Hi,
This weekend I changed to faster machines, some very old Ethernet card
and re-tried
Tinc... I stumbled into some nasty bugs.
Packets that are held in the receive queue become corrupted. I observed
lengths (ie, the
len field in the packet structure) that are ok when add_queue() inserts
them in the queue, and way to large lengths or even negative when the
queues get flushed.

Can simulation involving random number generation be segm ented?
I don't see why you need to shut R down between runs. Can you just replace
each time you generate a new 200 samples? You might also find "gc()" helpful
if you generate a lot of intermediate objects in a single run. Delete
objects you no longer need (unless you're going to replace them and can
afford to keep them around), then an explicit request gc() might help keep
you under the

Counting dates in arbitrary ranges
Dear Colleagues,
I have a data set that looks as below. I'd like to count the number of dates in a series of arbitrary ranges (breaks) i.e. not pre-defined breaks such as months, quarters or years. table(format()) produces ideally formatted output, but table() does not appear to accept arbitrary ranges.
I also tried converting the dates to numeric and using histogram to try to get the data,
