FreeBSD 4.4-REL to FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE upgrade problem.
I sent this to freebsd-questions earlier via the newsgroup, but I just found out today that the list-to-news gateway has been down for half a month now. Any idea when it's going back up? Who was hosting that service anyway? And now for the question.. I have a test server that is being used to test a 4.4-REL to 4.8-STABLE upgrade, and I've found the system will no longer boot unless I

FreeBSD 10 Beta 2: make installkernel failure with installer provided ZFS configuration.
Hi, I was trying to rebuild world on a FreeBSD 10 test system, that I had just installed. ZFS root was setup. I let the installation program do all the ZFS setup and configuration. I put root on a 5 disk encrypted raidz array. Besides the installer configuring 5 times the amount of swap space I asked for (asked for 8gb, installer put 8gb on each drive, for 40gb in total.) everything was working

Can't boot with a new install
Hi everyone, I just finished installing FreeBSD 6 RELEASE on my Toshiba Tecra A4 laptop and the installation was fine, however, when I rebooted the machine, I don't get the boot loader screen as if the machine can not see my drive! I tried the reinstalling and ensured that I set the slice to be bootable but that didn't change anything. Not sure if this is a common issue with FreeBSD 6 on

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
Hi, (mixing statements from various mails) Ronald F. Guilmette wrote: > To repeat, I already do know exactly how to set or unset the bootable > flag. Sorry for not getting this right on the first reading. I currently understand that a set active/bootable flag prevents the USB stick from showing up in BIOS, and that without that flag it begins to boot but fails with files not found.

help ith burncd (Input/output error, 6.1-RC, plextor PX-740a)
I have a new system which includes a Plextor PX-740a DVD+-R/RW CD-R/RW drive attached to an Asus A8V-MX motherboard. When I try to use burncd to burn a cd, it writes all of the data, says "fixating CD, please wait.." and then reports burncd: ioctl(CDRIOCFIXATE): Input/output error Oddly enough, the CD seems to be usable. I can successfully burn the same file if I use cdrecord. The

FreeBSD 9 "gptboot: invalid backup GPT header" error (boots fine though)
I've been deploying FreeBSD 9 without issue on a number of near-identical servers for a client, but have run into an interesting annoyance when I hit the two DB servers. These DB servers have an LSI 3ware 9750-8i (running a 6 disk RAID 10 in a single 3TB virtual volume) which puts them apart from the other two servers in this cluster (which don't show either issue I am about to

libguestfs fails on FreeBSD9.3, MINIX3 qcow2 images
Hello Richard and all, (continuing from https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2014-September/msg00112.html ). I'm experimenting with libguestfs on non-linux VMs, encountered errors on FreeBSD9.3 and MINIX3 (and few others, but these ones are easy to share), with host Ubuntu 14.04.01 LTS x86-64. Attached are logs from "virt-inspector -v -x" for each VM. The images are here:

4.8-RELEASE not identifying scsi drives
A problem with 4.8 reported by myself and Aaron D. Gifford. Anyone in -stable who knows more? ******** I'm assembling a Compaq 1850R with attached storage system. For the built in scsi controller (sym), there are three drives internally on channel 1 + 5 drives externally on channel 2. During boot, I can see all disks being identified first by the machine itself and then in the early part

XHCI umass support breaks between r248085 and r252560 on 9-STABLE
Three different external hard drives (Seagate, Western Digital and noname USB 3.0 enclosure) refused to be recognized as the umass devices. Reverting /usr/src/sys/dev/bsd/controller to r248085, building and loading just xhci module makes drives appear again. Below are snippets from the log in both cases: Non working: Jul 4 14:35:17 twinhead kernel: xhci0: <XHCI (generic) USB 3.0

mismatching vinum configurations
Hi, I had a power failure, and the on-disk configuration for vinum went bizarre. The logs read from disks are at http://biaix.org/pk/debug/ (log.$DEVICE files). The logs in da0 (barracuda) are the ones obviously wrong, I'm pretty sure the others are ok. Is this a 'virtually' dead drive? Can I force vinum to use the other's drive configuration? What's the less traumatic

make_dev_physpath_alias
Hello all. I have a supermicro 16 bay box with a LSI 9211-8i card. We use it for temp data storage, and we wanted to try the l4z compression. After updating the source tree to r247839: and doing a make buildworld cycle all works fine. But at boot time we get some warnings. make_dev_physpath_alias: WARNING - Unable to alias gptid/281951f4-a996-11e1-83eb-00259061b51a to enc at

FreeBSD 8.3-R sysinstall does not "see" disks that are recognized during boot
I've got a new supermicro server I'm trying to get FreeBSD on. It uses the Intel c602 chipset, and it's my understanding that support for that chipset (c60X) was recently added via the isci driver. Ok, great, that explains why 8.2-R and 9.0-R didn't see the drives. So, I grabbed the memstick image of 8.3-RELEASE that is on the ftp server, booted it up, and sure enough, as the
