Centos5: RAID1 on root/boot? [+lilo mkinitrd issues]
Hi,
I did a command-line upgrade of a RHL73 server to Centos 5. It was a
bit rocky road, but in the end it was successful.
There's one thing that bugged me. I'm using software RAID1 consisting
of /dev/hd{a,c}. No LVM or anything fancy, a number of /dev/mdX
partitions, including the root (+/boot).
I'd have preferred to continue using lilo as it works more easily with

CentOS5 beta installed
I have just successfully installed CentOS5 beta from CDs. No major issues
so far, but it is still too fresh to say anything. The machine I used is
peculiar. By peculiar I mean it won't boot if I use grub (this is a long
story by itself). So, I manually installed lilo to boot the system. The
only problem is that I could not use kdump. It produced an error saying

Booting CentOS with LILO?
Hello all!
I would like to know if is possible to use LILO as the boot loader
instead of the default GRUB. My question comes because I tried to run
lilo command but the message "command not found" appear. It sounds
like my only boot loader option in CentOS is GRUB ??.
I found lilo.conf.anaconda, but not the lilo command. From already

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the
advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all
together?
One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the
disks in a RAID1 bootable.

and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not
seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub.

Bug-report: Booting DOS images from USB
Hi,
I'm doing a small hobby project writing some tools to put DOS boot images
and Linux rescue images on a USB stick.
For this I have partitioned my USB stick in 2 partitions, one 192MB
partition with a VFAT filesystem (for the normal use) and a second
partition with an ext3 filesystem.
My aim was to provide a graphical menu (grub) to access the different
images using memdisk. Since

grub/raid1 on centos4
With Centos3, fedora1/2 I have been able to put /boot on a RAID1
partition and have it boot normally. Unlike earlier versions that
used lilo as the default boot loader, these did not make the 2nd drive
bootable but at least I was fairly confident that if the first drive
failed I could use the install CD in rescue mode to fix up the 2nd one
and go on. However, Centos4 won't boot at all with

booting from a +2TB disk
I have been trying to install CentOS 4.1 on a new server today. The
installation went fine but the system doesn't boot. It doesn't even
get to the Grub screen. The system has a 3ware 9500 series controller
and 12 250GB SATA disks which are configured for RAID5 with one hot
spare. I searched on the web and noticed that this is a Grub (and
Lilo) limitation. Is there any way around it other

how to change distro live?
hi,
we've got many mandrake 8,9 and 10 system remotely. we'd like to
remotely replace these systems to centos 5. we've 4 disk in them. one is
the system drive (no need for raid) and there is free space on the
remaining 3 disk. so what we think about:
- download the new system to the data disks
- install grub (mandrake has lilo) to boot the old system and reboot
- create the old system

Dual-boot with WinXP, CentOS already installed
Hi all,
I'd like to deploy a solution with dual-booting systems where CentOS 5.3 is
already installed and WinXP will be installed to a separate disk.
I found
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_linux_and_windows_xp_linux_installed_first.htm?page=1
and it seems straight forward enough, although the description is for Ubuntu.
The problem as I see it, is that the how-to differs from how

etherboot & multiboot
I''ve now given up trying to get grub working with my particular e1000
adapter, I''ve tried all the patches and all I can get is something that
works a little bit but never past the grub menu.
I''m sure I read something somewhere about a tool which would combine a
multiboot image + modules into a single bootable item which could be
loaded by lilo, and am hoping that the

Problem with data=journal on root file system.
I am using RedHat 7.2 w/ kernel 2.4.7-10. My / filesystem is configured
as ext3. I want to change it to use data=journaled instead of ordered.
If I mount it from a boot floppy, it mounts fine. (mount /dev/hda2 /mnt
-t ext3 -o data=journal). I have attempted to find the correct
procedure to start it up as journaled from grub to no avail. I have

Booting from an external USB drive?
Is it possible?
Booting the installer from the CD works, finds the USB drive, and
allows me to put the root filesystem on it. I put the /boot partition
on the internal hard drive and installed GRUB in the boot record of
that partition.
GRUB shows the menu and begins booting, but eventually fails with the
error that /dev/sda5 (the external partition) does not exist.
I was hoping (perhaps in

Using syslinux to boot from .... hard disk?
Hi all,
Sorry if this question seems odd. Is it possible to use syslinux to boot
from a regular hard disk? I know that's exactly what grub, lilo etc. are
doing, but I would really like to utilize the comboot option of
syslinux. Are there LBA limitations to such a setup?

Edit Access to TipsAndTricks/Kickstart
Hey,
I was thinking of added some stuff about setting the network settings from
the lilo prompt instead of waiting for a dhcp timeout when kickstarting a
system..
Thanks.
