freeBSD User provider
Hello,
from the doc it seems that the User type has a provider of ''pw'' for
FreeBSD. It seems the provider does not allow dupelicate, does not
allow to manage the homedir and to manage password.
in the code the duplicate uid is set so it seems the doc is out of
date on this :)
- manage home directory, i don''t really understand what is that
parameter. The

Useradd & NIS issue if the user exist
Hi,
I have a class to add users to all the host servers. We are in
the process to have a coexisting user which belongs in NIS & as well as
/etc/passwd.
We have NIS clients (yp running) on all host servers.
So when running puppet is fails to add or modify user, bcos the user
already exists in NIS.
Eg: A user pcruise is an existing NIS user.
When using useradd or

Using multiple values for source, for platform/arch/host configs
Hi, in an attempt to simplify my configuration, and from a suggestion
on IRC, I was thinking of using multiple values for file { source =>
[] }. Was just currious if anyone had any comments on this.
Basically, I setup my file-server to use:
<snip>
[private]
path /var/lib/puppet/files/private/%H
allow *
[shared]
path /var/lib/puppet/files/shared
allow *

Using variables in virtual resources
Hi.
I''ve defined a virtual user "kenneth", and depending on a variable in the
node definiton I''d like to add the users to different groups. Consider this
example:
###### Code start
node "server.example.com" {
$server_type = "typeA"
realize User[kenneth]
}
@user {"kenneth":
ensure => present,
uid => 1000,

fqdn & templates
So, looks like the latest facter has fqdn... cool. but for some
reason templates can''t access it. I was defining $fqdn in my
site.pp, but had to remove it after the last yum update, which
brought in a new facter package. But now my templates can use fqdn.
Why would this happen?

Facter operatingsystemrelease on Fedora
Currently, facter returns the kernel version as both the kernel and
operatingsystemrelease facts. I would like to change that so that on
Fedora, operatingsystemrelease is the release number (5,6,7 etc.) or
''Rawhide'' ... are there any objections to making that change ?

Recommendations for organizing hosts into groups?
I have a few different groupings of hosts, and I am wondering what is
the best way to organize the node configuration for them.
I have a few machines that are VMware hosts, a bunch of VMware
guests, and the main admin server which runs a bunch of stuff like
puppetmasterd.
I''ve got a bunch of classes/*.pp which define configuration for sudo,
yum, java, etc. Right now I just have

Command line vs config file override for configuration params
Hi all
I''m working on my modular recursive Makefile & svn-backed home for my
Puppet manifests, custom functions, types, etc. So I''m trying to put
together individual modules, test targets and so on.
I have noticed that the $libdir (and probably the other configuration
options too) sources from puppet.conf are not overridden by specifying
--libdir=blah on the commmand line

"Could not find a default provider" for user/group
Hi, I''ve recently started seeing a bunch of err messages when running
puppet about "Could not find a default provider" for user/group.
Not sure what is going on, these are all FC5 hosts, with /usr/sbin/
useradd
Any idea why puppet isn''t detecting this and setting it as the
default provider?
Using puppet 0.22.1 (from FC5 rpms)... which BTW still have lockdir

Another ''found a bug'' problem - This time with user purging.
Ok, given the statement on the web page about unlesssystemuser under
Resources (
http://reductivelabs.com/projects/puppet/documentation/typedocs.html#resources),
I assume that users can be purged.
However, when I attempt to do this with resources { user: purge => true,
noop => true } and what I get is:
err: Found a bug: private method ''split'' called for nil:NilClass.

The user type: restrict login
Hi there,
If I create a user, there seems to be no way to restrict it from being
able to log in. Is there a simple way in which I can extend it to do
that, or will I have to build my own define?
It would also be useful to specify the user''s ssh keys and authorized
keys, for example.
I am also wondering how much effort it would be to add another provider
for user (such as

Virtual resource not found
Hi All,
I asked on IRC but didn''t have everything organized and most people
seemed busy. Hoping someone can see what I''m missing here.
I''m trying to create a network module, used similar to the ''users''
configuration described in the Best Practices document. I have a users
module which has that and it works with similar syntax to below. If I
