Puppet uses too much RAM memory
Hello,
I have two Vmware images, with 256MB of RAM memory each one, running
puppetmasterd for the server and puppetd for the client. It''s normal
that my puppetmasterd and puppetd occupies almost 10% of RAM memory
each one? They aren''t doing anything especial, just listening on the
ports.
Thanks.

Writing definitions to support changing defaults
What is the right way to write definition so that defaults can be overriden?
$puppetdir = "puppet://$server/files"

0644, $backup = false, $recurse = false) {
file { $name:

Scaling Puppet 0.22.1 to hunderdes of nodes.
Hi,
My environment is composed of ~250 workstations hitting a single
puppetmaster server, which has been working fairly well up until now.
The most recent change has been a migration of a lot of remote file copy
objects which were previously handled with cfengine.
client side puppetd calls to the puppetmaster.getconfig method are
taking unreasonably long, on the order of 2-3 minutes. It

End of file and other errors: solution
For anyone that has experienced the odd End of file or Cannot describe
errors, we''ve found that switching to Mongrel has fixed this problem for
us. We''re currently running 5 instance of puppetmaster under mongrel (with
the apache proxy in front) and things are going great.

Puppet/webrick benchmark
We haven''t been able to use mongrel for testing yet, but in order not to
waste time, we did some performance testing with 1, 2 and 4
puppetmasterd/webrick processes.
Attached is an HTML page (ripped from our wiki - not pretty, but
reasonably readable) which describes the method and results.
If someone feels like making some nice graphs, that would be great. If
not, I''ll try to

puppet reports
Hi all,
we activated puppet mail reports but we are receiving a lot of mails
when yum fails to update the repos, like this one:

latest version: Execution of ''/usr/bin/yum -d 0 -e 0 list available
munin-node'' returned 1: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository:

File corruption while serving
Can anyone who''s having this problem please send details? I''m trying
to reproduce it -- I''ve got 5 clients concurrently retrieving 200 10k
files made of random binary, and I can''t get any corruption or memory
growth at all.
Is everyone experiencing the problem using Mongrel? Webrick? What
versions of ruby? Are only big files affected? Small files?

parsing manifests in a pre-commit hook
Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to parse individual manifest files as
part of a pre-commit hook in subversion. I am looking for something like
puppetmasterd --parseonly, but that will work on individual files. This
way I can reject a commit if it does not pass.
Any ideas?
TIA

upgrading puppet?
How are people upgrading puppet itself on their hosts that run puppetd?
Can puppet be used to upgrade to a new puppet package via gem, rpm or
some other package provider? How do you handle restarting?
Just hoping theres a better way than "ssh and a for loop" or having to
have another configuration management system installed.

Definition specialization
There was a discussion a while ago about adding inheritance to
definitions. There is a need for a way to specialize parameters while
allowing passing other options. This comes up with remotefile where
it would be nice to have a default server location but not specify all
the parameters (and their defaults) in the definition.
Was there a change to the syntax? Is there a way to accomplish this?

"not authorized" when testing mongrel support
Hi,
We''re trying to follow the instructions at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/UsingMongrel
(Just using a single puppetmaster/mongrel instance and plain mod_proxy for now,
instead of balancer one)
We got past the "Server is not a class" error by modifying mongrel.rb
We also kind-of got past the:
/opt/bin/puppetmasterd:293: undefined method `daemonize'' for

Switching to mongrel
I made an attempt to switch to mongrel today and I''m running into a strange
error message I can''t seem to track down:
debug: puppetmaster: Setting servertype to ''mongrel''

Tracing through with the debugger shows:

puppetmaster through HTTP proxy
I have a test area network that is not routed to the production network
because of IP address space re-use between the two networks. I would
like the puppetmaster to serve both the production and test area
networks. The puppetmaster is on the production network. I understand
the puppet to puppetmaster connect to be HTTP using SSL.
Can I somehow setup the puppet clients to use an HTTP

puppet (Timeout::Error) HELP???
Can anyone help me with this error I am having. I am using puppet on
Debian Etch, version 0.20.1-1 from apt works OK, but due to one or two
problems we want to use the version from testing, 0.23.2-10, but the
puppetd just fails upon startup spitting this out:

error "Stack level too deep" on ''exec[ "perl Makefile.PL" ] ?
Hi,
I''m testing puppet from the subversion trunk. I have a rather
hacked-together system to install a CRM into one of my nodes, which
worked (more or less) with version 0.19.3. When I tried to do a puppet
run on a completely clean node it seemed to stall on the ''compilation''
part (I do an exec of ''perl Makefile.PL'' in the appropriate dir). When

Starting out with lots of problems.
So I am beginning the long process of learning puppet... and it seems
that I am missing some vital things.
My systems are RHEL-4, and i have installed the
puppet/facter/puppetmasterd from dlutter@redhat.com''s archive.
[root@canopus puppet]# rpm -qa | egrep ''puppet|facter'' | sort

Last call for fixes: Releasing tomorrow
I think I''ve got every fix except one in that''s going to make it into
grover, which I''ll hopefully be releasing tomorrow. I plan on adding
Tim Stoop''s patches for home directory management (#432), but
everything else is getting pushed to the next release at this point.
I''ve fixed all of the major bugs, or at least I think I have. If

Intermittent failure in file server
Hi, I''ve just turned email reporting on for my Puppet installation, and
discovered that I''m receiving intermittent failures on files being copied
from the file server. Puppet is running every 30 seconds, but I''m getting
these errors maybe 12 times in 24 hours. Any thoughts on the significance
of this? The error message is a bit opaque for me.

Resource dependencies
For example, I have a bunch of package resources defined for packages
which are contained in the yum repositories defined by the yumrepo
resources. If the package is installed first, then it will fail
because the repository is not available. I know about "require". But
I would prefer not to add a direct dependency on the source
repository. Is there an easier way to do this? What
