Monitoring puppet
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi *!
How do you monitor when the last puppet transaction was successful on a node?
I''m searching for something easy like a timestamp, so I can put a nagios watch
on this.

chicken/egg problem with custom types
Hi
while usings DavidS mysql module with its custom mysql types I hit some
kind of a chicken/egg problem:
While deploying mysql, I also like to define some mysql munin user, to
enable munin monitoring for mysql things. I choosed to use the
mysql_user type from DavidS and it works perfectly. However I start
using the custom types on a host where mysql have already been installed.
Now I should

You folks were so helpful with my last problem I thought I''d try again.
I''m attempting to use the services filetype to ensure that ntpd is
running on all my hosts. Unfortunately this does not seem to be
working on my Gentoo test system. I get the following output on the
client log:

Puppet uses too much RAM memory
Hello,
I have two Vmware images, with 256MB of RAM memory each one, running
puppetmasterd for the server and puppetd for the client. It''s normal
that my puppetmasterd and puppetd occupies almost 10% of RAM memory
each one? They aren''t doing anything especial, just listening on the
ports.
Thanks.

Issues with Puppet on FreeBSD / Creating a Recipe
Hi,
I am running an environment with 15 FreeBSD servers on which I want to
maintain ports, rc.conf settings, and assorted configuration in
/usr/local/etc/. Looked around the existing Puppet docs, I got a
puppetmaster and a test client to work and install a package as
specified in the site manifest. This is very basic but awesome!
I want to create a puppet FreeBSD HowTo that addresses a

rsyslog as default syslog daemon?
Hi all!
Is anybody here using rsyslog? I am looking for the right solution how
to use rsyslog in CentOS 5 as the default logging daemon. We use it
because of filtering using regular expressions.
I switched from sysklogd to rsyslog simply using
chkconfig --del syslog
chkconfig --add rsyslog
chkconfig rsyslog on
service syslog stop
service rsyslog start
but this seems not to be

Forw: RedHat sysklogd vulnerability
Another from Bugtraq. I've also forwarded this one on to our contact at Red
Hat (Stephen Smoogen) and he tells me it's in their QA currently.

Sysklogd''s -r option
sysklogd in RH4.2 always opens a UDP listen socket, even when -r
is not specified on the command line. It doesn''t check the file descriptor
when -r is off though, but the behaviour still irritates the
system administrator greatly (see also the recent bugtraq messages
about this).
Here is a patch to fix this:

CentOS 5.1 install via PXE Failure
Hi All,
This has to be something simple....but it's really busting my chops. We have
a PXE boot server that is used for initial installation of a number of
operating systems and it works well. However the CentOS 5.1 x86_64 install
is seriously broken.
We've made the PXE boot images available from
"centos/5/os/x86_64/images/pxeboot/" in the tftp boot etc. We've rsynced

simlinks and options
Greetings.
I wrote a script that make remote backups with rsync. I have 2 main
problems with it
1) I want that the destination directory (on the repository machine)
recreate the backed up file path and it permission (I use -R here )
2) Is there a way to "follow" all the links using -R and -a parameters..??
Currently I am using something like this.

Bug#290511: logcheck: syslogd restart in cron.daily/sysklogd causes a log message
Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.32
Severity: wishlist
/etc/cron.daily/sysklogd restarts syslogd at the end of the script.
This causes a daily log message, currently missed by logcheck:
Jan 14 06:55:22 pyloric syslogd 1.4.1#16: restart (remote reception).
I'm currently using this regex in ignore.server.d/local-syslogd:

Hi,
When you have a HVM domain running, if you try to boot a regular
paravirtualized domain, dom0 (or maybe the hypervisor) crashes immediately (reboot). The opposite
(trying to boot a HVM domain while a regular paravirtualized domain is
running) crashes the system as well.
