ANNOUNCE: 0.23.0 release
Hi all,
I''ve finally released 0.23.0 (only two days late!). You can get it
from the usual locations (although the packagers will take a little
while to package it up, I assume):
https://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/InstallationGuide
You can read the full changelog[1], which is pretty long, but here''s
a summary of the things you either want or should look out for:

Subversion tags are now available in git
Hi all,
As anyone on the commits list now knows, I''ve added all of the tags
from svn to git. You can fetch all of the tags with this command:
git fetch --tags
Then you can compare the tagged releases like any other commit:
git diff 0.23.1 0.23.2
I''ve also updated the PuppetSource wiki page with this info.

Aptitude vs. apt
Hi all,
I need to write an aptitude provider for Debian. How should it differ
from apt? Can I just s/apt/aptitude/g, or do I need to do something
else? Any other weird behaviours I should look for or whatever?
I''ll make it a subclass of apt (and since Deb seems to specify aptitude
as the default now, maybe apt should subclass aptitude), so any dpkg
answerfile work should work on

0.24.2 release candidate
Hi all,
I''ve done as much bug-fixing as I''m going to be able to do in 0.24.2,
I think, so please test the current code if you can.
I made some unfortunately significant changes today, in order to try
to remove any shared objects in the file server, which will hopefully
solve the file corruption issues, plus some very strange issues
resulting from renaming

SVN Release Candidate: Please test
Hi all,
I''m getting very close to the next release of Puppet, and I need help
making sure it''s as bug-free as possible. The major changes in this
version relate to Rails (and thus resource collect/export) and
transaction internals. If you are currently using Puppet''s rails
support, you''re going to have to migrate manually, unfortunately (or

File corruption while serving
Can anyone who''s having this problem please send details? I''m trying
to reproduce it -- I''ve got 5 clients concurrently retrieving 200 10k
files made of random binary, and I can''t get any corruption or memory
growth at all.
Is everyone experiencing the problem using Mongrel? Webrick? What
versions of ruby? Are only big files affected? Small files?

Patch : Fix includes
Hi all,
Below is a patch that fixes a couple of instances where a function
is used before it has been prototyped.
There was a little subtlty involved here because the file
include/test_libs_common/metadata_utils.h had the #include guard
the same as that of /src/test_libFLAC/metadata.h meaning that
only the first one included would actually do anthing.
Patch below.
Cheers,
Erik

[PATCH] : Add -Wdeclaration-after-statement
Hi all,
It seems that with commit number 13652 I inadvertantly broken the
build.
The problem is that I'm using the default version of gcc on Ubuntu
which is gcc-4.1.2. It seems that this version is actually a C99
compiler and C99 explicitly allows declarations after statements.
However, declarations after statements raise an error in earlier
versions of gcc. In short this is an error that

Issue with ralsh and Puppet installed as gem
Hi,
I finally found why ralsh was failing on my systems; Puppet was
installed as a gem and ralsh couldn''t find it. I added the preamble from
puppetd and it seems to work fine now:

Could not describe errors
Hello community,
We are running puppetmaster 0.22.3 with 45 servers attached and we are
seeing a lot of messages that say:
(err): Could not describe /ssh/sshd_config.RedHat: End of file reached:
We were seeing a lot of this with 0.22.1 as well. Interestingly, during
the stretch where we were running 0.22.2 (most of April until 2 days ago)
we didn''t see this error at all or very

0.22.4 release candidate
Hi all,
I''m hoping to release 0.22.4 on Monday, so please test now. As
always, if possible please actually run this somewhere in your
infrastructure, in addition to running the unit tests, since there
are always areas that aren''t quite covered with the unit tests.
Hopefully this will be the last point release before the next major
release (elmo).

You disappear for five weeks...
And someone goes and redesigns the look and operation of the Trac. Quite
noice, but a couple of comments:
* The main toolbar ("Wiki", "Documentation", "Timeline") ends up under the
puppet logo on the left hand side, which is a pest.
* I can''t click on any link, text box, or button in the main part of the
page. All of the navigation links work fine, and I

RFC: Multiple small releases, or one big roll-up?
Hi all,
In looking at the current bug list for elmo[1], it''s pretty clear
that this is a lot of work, and some of it is kind of segmented into
related chunks. Additionally, a good bit of it has an impact on
backward compatibility, although in nearly all cases I expect to be
able to remain entirely or almost entirely backwards compatible.
Given that, would people prefer that I

generating ordered, random decimal fractions
Greetings
How do I do this in R? Checking the Cran site produces a bewildering array
of packages that I can't seem to find to load. Surely the main program has
this function?
Cheers

Impending release: Please test
Hi all,
I''ve just finished the last major work before a new release
(0.23.0). I''ve got my next work planned out, and I want to get this
code, with its bug-fixes et al, released.
There have been significant internal changes, so I would really
appreciate it if people could test it against their systems,
especially those who are using non-{Debian,OS X} platforms, like

substituting level for NA in factor column
Greetings
I have a bunch of NAs in a column of categorical variables designating
the size classes (e.g., smallest to largest: 1,2,3,4) of cave crickets.
I'd like to substitute "U" (for unknown) for the NAs. Can anyone give me
an idea how to do this? Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Kurt

OT: Reducing pdf file size
Greetings
Does anyone have any suggestions for reducing pdf file size,
particularly pdfs containing photos, without sacrificing quality? Thanks
for any tips in advance.

Confusing error statement
Greetings
Using the following command I've been trying to subset a dataframe of
counts of an organism to compute the sizes of groups for use as a
predictor:
Hs.patches <- as.data.frame(with(Hs.long,
table(Cave,Year,Month,Region,Plot,)))
I am getting the following error message that I do not understand:
ERROR: argument is missing, with no default
Can anyone shed light on this
