Problem with large numbers of bpf devices
A STABLE (not updated since 12/13/02) system shows very strange behavior for devices with a minor mode greater than 256. tcpdump does not work reliably and ls is, uh, "strange", using hex for the minor mode. crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 252 Apr 11 14:29 bpf252 crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 253 Apr 11 14:29 bpf253 crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 254 Apr 11 14:29 bpf254

6.1 responsiveness under heavy (cpu?) load + thread monitoring
Hello, I have a RELENG_6/AMD64 with an AMD64X2 cpu, 1GB of memory, 512MB swap. I remarked that when I run 2 simulation program [1], sometimes, one of them run one or several of its threads [2] very slowly, but sometimes, it doesn't occur. I remarked that is doesn't depend on SMP/UP, ULE/4BSD, i386/AMD64. It seems to occur also with the kernel stress test under the same conditions (all

Urgent FreeBSD Boot question!
Dear friends: I decided to go out and buy the latest issue of Linux Format with the FreeBSD 6 CD. I am very glad I did. FreeBSD is tough to install, but after spending several hours I finally succeeded in doing a perfect installation. ONE BIG PROBLEM: When I removed the CD and rebooted, I got into my Windows XP (I have two separate disks, one for Windows, one of FreeBSD). There was no way to get

ocfs2 can not mount for nodes. first time installation
Error: mount.ocfs2: Transport endpoint is not connected while mounting /dev/sdc1 on /u02, could not mount /dev/sdc1. Add EMC SAN as shared disk and visable for two nodes. 3. configure int-rac1 using ocfs2console, add two nodes 4. according

Multiple windows shell multiplexer...
Hi, I am currently using keyboardcast but I had to modify the sources to make it behave "properly" (light, auto-placed, auto-tiled windows, etc) and... I lost my modifications and do not want to recode it once more... :/ I wanted to use mssh (not the python one, the one from Bradley Smith) but I cannot find an rpm and cannot compile it on CentOS 5 due to a too old vte-devel library

bin/121684: : dump(8) frequently hangs
Any progress here? Does anyone know if this will be fixed in 7.1 latest, or should we start looking for different backup solution (in this case I would suggest to remove dump from the source tree - having a backup tool that doesn't work is worse than having none). After upgrading we basically cannot backup our servers. Shouldn't this issue be on

Working configuration for 5.1 and VMware 3 or 2?
Hello is there something wrong with the mail archive search scripts? I always seem to get 'list unavailable' :-( Anyway - 5_1 on Dell Latitude C640. the vmware3 port installs but the paths are a little odd - isoimages, licences are looked for in /usr/lib/vmware rather than /usr/local/lib.... I installed (w2k) a guest and it is fine but I cannot get networking host-only or bridge modes

Frequent Gnome Terminal crashes in CentOS 5.1
Ever since I upgraded all my systems to CentOS 5.1 I have been getting reports from users about "all their windows disappearing". A little digging revealed that they meant all gnome-terminal windows. Since there is only one gnome-terminal process by default for all your open terminal windows and tabs, a crash of that process means losing all your terminal windows. These

repeatable crash on RELENG7
While trying to speed up nanobsd builds, I mounted /usr/obj on a ramdisk and found my box crashing. Thinking it might be hardware, I tried a separate machine, but with the same results. I have 4G of ram (i386). Am I just running out of some kernel memory ? If so, is there anything I can adjust to prevent this, yet still use mfs in this way ? mdconfig -a -t malloc -s 1800M newfs /dev/md0

R package: Where to put code to Run Once Only?
Is there a specific place where we can place code to run once only in a package? I have code that switches based on Sys.info()[["nodename"]] - but since this just about never changes, I would like to run it only once when someone runs: require( mypackage ) or library( mypackage ) I'm tempted to have some free-floating code in global space (in one of my package's .R files), but

WLAN support
Hi folks! First post here, so please don't bother if it's not the right place to post those kind of questions. I'm currently running a 4.7-release (upgrade to 4.8 planned but not yet started) on my production box. As I would like to setup a small WLAN (major use for my notebook, other clients are possible) I need to know which cards are really supported. The handbook is IMHO not

Problems setting terminal size in termcap/xterm
Hi I'm trying to set the terminal size in /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm, but it seems that CentOS doesn't look at this file. I know this works in REHL 4.7 and Fedora 10, 11. Does anyone know a work around to this? Thanks Marcelo

Regression in stable for ThinkPad T520 with Intel GPU (Sandybridge) between June 22 and July 18
I will shortly spend a bit of time tracking down the breakage more closely, but my 9-Stable system of June 22 runs fine. After an update on about July 10, I noted that it would hang after Xorg was started, but usually worked. After an upgrade to July 18, my system could no longer start Gnome. It would start Xorg and Gnome would start normally, getting many apps started, but about 10 seconds after

problem with gdm
Hi folks, I just used cvsup to upgrade my system to 4.8 stable. Now I have problem with gdm. When I have logged in as other user, I will log in as root. That happens when I automatically start gdm after booting. But if I start gdm myself after boot, I won't have this problem. I don't know why. Does somebody have the same problem before? Thanks! Peng
