mount -u -r drops nosuid ?
Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but it seems like potential security risk: I have a ufs fs mounted rw+nosuid, then I needed to downgrade it to ro, so I executed mount -u -r on it - imagine my surpise when I found that nosuid flag was removed as well. I know I could have used mount -u -r -o nosuid, but the present behavior seems to be non-obvious (update one flag, orthogonal flags dropped

different ways to disable https in apache...
Hello, I built apache+openssl+mod_ssl. It is working fine, and I have been starting the server with: apachectl startssl Recently, however, I have decided that I will not be doing anything over https (for a while, at least) with this web server, so for security reasons, I want to only run on port 80. So now I start the server with: apachectl start And it runs without SSL. My question is, is

sshd_config question
Hi.? I have configured sshd in OpenBSD to require publickey authentication. I've tried configuring FreeBSD to do the same, but I can still login via keyboard authentication. Here are the options I have in my sshd_config: PasswordAuthentication no ChallengeResponseAuthentication no UsePAM no After setting those options I kill -HUP the sshd? process. Is there something simple I am missing?

ports/55928: vmware2 broken on -STABLE, presumably by PAE import

Your patch makes VmWare2 build, but it doesn't make it work: - VmWare fails to allocate memory (see http://anders.fix.no/test/vmware/1.png and http://anders.fix.no/test/vmware/2.png). - There seems to be something wrong with

s/key authentication for Apache on FreeBSD?
I'm constructing a Web server which may require restricted areas of the site to be used from public places where a password might be sniffed. The damage that could be done by taking snapshots of the content from one session with a spy program is minimal. What the owner of the server does NOT want, though, is to allow unauthorized parties to gain unfettered access by stealing the password via

AC-97 problem between RELENG_4_8 and RELENG_4
Sorry if this is a known problem... I've been tracking RELENG_4 on my Toshiba laptop for a while now; a couple of months ago (not sure when) my sound stopped working. More specifically, when it gets to the pcm probe, the boot hangs. I dual-boot with WinXP and figured that somehow XP had hosed the hardware, so I wrote it off. Today, I made world with RELENG_4_8, and voila, my sound's

Tools to modify shared libraries
Has anyone ever come across general-purpose tools for modifying shared libraries? What I want to do is to edit the list of "needed" shared libraries to correct the common mistakes that developers make in creating shared objects with large lists of shared libraries. Specifically, I want to modify linux-flashplugin6/libflashplayer.so to remove all of the idiotic references to shared

whining about tinderbox messages
On the one hand, yes, they're about things most readers can't do anything about. On the other hand, they do let you know (once the tinderbox has stabilized, this being a new setup with the bugs being worked out of it) whether recent -STABLE will build or not, which can be quite useful even for ordinary users of -STABLE. (You know to hold off on updating if it's failing for your

utf-8 support in libc?
Reading thru one of the postgres mailing lists regarding which character encoding to use for a database, someone chimed in and claimed this: Umm, you should choose an encoding supported by your platform and the locales you use. For example, UTF-8 is a bad choice on *BSD because there is no collation support for UTF-8 on those platforms. On Linux/Glibc UTF-8 is well supported but you

/bin/login problem
I would be surprised if someone hasn''t encountered this already, but I haven''t found any discussion of the nature of this problem. I run RehHat 5.0. If a user makes a mistake in the login process such as the following: login: mistake password: xxx Login incorrect! login: username password xxxx bash$ a ps will show, among other things, 2333 /bin/login --mistake. shutdown -r / shutdown -h / reboot all hang and don't cleanly dismount
Hello -STABLE@, So I've seen this situation seemingly randomly on a number of both physical 9.1 boxes as well as VMs for I would say 6-9 months at least. I finally have a physical box here that reproduces it consistently that I can reboot easily (ie; not a production/client server). No matter what I do: reboot shutdown -p shutdown -r This specific server will stop at "All buffers
