Old machine -
Hi guys
Can anyone give me any reason why BX should fail - tryig to
install FreeBSD 4.7 on an old machine from CDROM. The
machine loads a very old version of FreeBSD from hard drive
(password long forgotten) so it seems to be running OK - it
auto loads X windows - so the nachine seems to be running
fine.
Here is the output that I do not understand ;-( :
int=00000000 err=00000000 efl=00030287

NAT proxy concepts
Hi Guys
I have been taking a close look at some networking
opportunities which are being frustrated by the limits which
are imposed by NAT. In particular the constraints impose by

conceptually describe as a reverse NAT proxy?

Win2K cannot retrieve print driver, XP is okay
Hi all,
I'm having trouble persuading Windows 2000 to find the print driver on
a CUPS/Samba 3.0.20 server. The whole system has been working
perfectly with Windows XP clients for the last couple of months, but we
have a few Windows 2000 PCs/servers that need to have the printers
installed, and when double-clicking on a shared printer the Win2K
machines are saying that the print server

image axes
I'm plotting matrices with image() and would like the axes to reflect
the conventional view that the upper left corner of the plot is (1,1).
But image seems to think that the lower left corner is (1,1). Can
someone suggest a way of persuading it to think otherwise. In effect,
I just want the y axis to run from from 1 to n downwards, not upwards.
I thought that something like axes=FALSE in

R for education research tutoral?
I have a couple of colleagues doing research in Computer Science
Education. I've talked one of them into using R (he is also interested
in data mining) and am about half-way to persuading the other (who agrees
that he ought to know more about analysing his data). Neither of them
has a strong statistic background, but both are fairly able and willing
to learn new tools and techniques.

One thing to do first might be to make sure that flac is suitable to
run on lost cost hardware. For example the amount of buffering required
in the decoder.
If I understand the flac format correctly, all decoders must support
block sizes upto 65535 samples (ie 256k of decoded stereo

R-1.3.0-1.3.1.diff does not patch correctly
Subj. says it. The patch contains several lines complaining about "No newline".
After removing these the patch was applicable.

UK install
Well I'm slowly learning my way around asterisk although as yet I
haven't had the chance to actually hook the system up to an ISDN line.
I am going to migrate from an Argent Office setup. My only problem is
keeping costs down on the phones.
The Argent system is running about 30 POTS phones. Can someone suggest
the cheapest option? Should I get some kind of large scale FXS box or

Should Speex VBR Introduce Distortion?
Hi All,
I've run into a small hiccup in encoding my audios with Speex. When I
encode audience laughter and applause with 'speexenc' (version 1.0.1),
the result is quite acceptable... until I enable VBR. Then it distorts
horribly.
My understanding of VBR is that it frees the encoder to vary the number
of bits emitted to better maintain the quality requested, and so I would

optim()
I was having some problems persuading optim() to give me the answers I
wanted,

I accept this is a hammer to crack a nut, but was still expecting the
answer -1.
I got:

Installed Doctor Who Game =P, but get bug error
I went though a good amount of trouble to install the game, because you need to be in the UK to install it, but I'm in the USA. So I get it installed through a proxy and everything is good until I click it to start.
It tells me it can't run it because of some bug. I don't know if you can help me or not.
Thanks.

SSSD and cache persistence
I have a large number of CentOS machines (both 6 & 7) getting account
information from an LDAP database using SSSD. It all works fine and is
fairly reliable.
However, I'm having problems with persuading the caching system to
forget about users when they are deleted from LDAP.
I know about sss_cache with either -E or -U options, but that doesn't
delete anything, just invalidates the

Problem running BBC Doctor Who game in Linux Mint Debian
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 Laptop running 64bit Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109.
The laptop has ATI Radeon M92 (HD 4500 / 5000) graphics.
This is based on Debian testing and because at present there is no WINE in the testing repositories, I have installed 1.3.30 from:
http://frickelplatz.de/debian/
This seems to work fine: I can run LTspiceIV perfectly.
However ...
I have tried
