Mail delivered, but lost?
Running dovecot 1.2.9 on a Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS virtual machine. Postfix receives messages and hands them over to deliver for local storage. Today two mails came in that could not be found allthough they got delivered. What catches my eye is the "?" in the msgid: Jan 5 21:10:47 mail dovecot: deliver(consulting): msgid=? <14847_1294258245_ZZh0g1h9eLfxL.00_fc2fe6e910f03.4d24de54 at

Modifying LDAP search results for user_attrs
I need to authenticate users via LDAP either by mailaddress or login name. In both cases the mailbox location is /src/mail/%d/%n. I can easily deduct that path from the mailaddress, but not so from the login name. Can I get the mail address as part of fetching user_attrs and modify it on the fly? Something along the lines of this: user_attrs =

SASL EXTERNAL docs?
The wiki says Dovecot supports SASL EXTERNAL as of version 1.2. I couldn't find any documentation telling me how I would configure SASL EXTERNAL. How many concurrent IMAP sessions?
Has anybody ever bothered to measure how many concurrent IMAP sessions dovecot can handle? I know it depends on hardware, filesystem, mailbox type etc., but what exactly controls the number and what have people on the list measured? p at rick -- state of mind Digitale Kommunikation http://www.state-of-mind.de Franziskanerstra?e 15 Telefon +49 89 3090 4664 81669 M?nchen

RFE: IMAP LIST Extension for Special-Use Mailboxes
Timo, would you consider adding support for "IMAP LIST Extension for Special-Use Mailboxes" <http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6154.txt> any time near in the future? I would really love to get rid of all those folders created by all those different mail clients just because they can't agree to use the same folder for special purpose. Obviously clients need to support it too.

Problem listing SPECIAL-USE flags
Timo, we want to implement SPECIAL-USE in Thunderbird (TB), but we've run into problems. I believe you could help change that. Here's the problem: By default TB only lists subscribed (LSUB) folders when it accesses an IMAP server. However when I do a LSUB on recent Dovecot 2.1 code from mercurial I don't get to see the SPECIAL-USE flags. Therefore TB fails to identify which folders

dovecot stats: useful data to gather
Timo, following our discussion on dovecot stats at the LinuxTag 2012 my team and I sat down and put together a list of stat items we think to be useful in daily dovecot usage. Besides pulling together all the data we also think it would be useful to have an SNMP interface to access the stats. Our offer to create and contribute a standalone web interface for dovecot stats stands. Here are the

OT: IMAP folder aliases
It seems that there is no standard for folder names that deal with typical message classes such as drafts, outbox, sent, spam etc. At least there's no common sense on a naming convention that tells how client should handle this. Worse than this, most IMAP clients auto-create folders according to their own naming convention if they don't exist. Every client introduces its own view. Users

2.1.7 TLS issues
Hi, I have an interesting problem: I am building dovecot packages for Ubuntu since 10.04. Never had bigger trouble with it. Now since 2.1.6 or 2.1.7 (I can not say more precisely), Thunderbird 10ESR and Outlook 2010 can no longer use 143/TLS correctly. Automx delvers 143/TLS and Outlook tells me that it can not create a secure connection. I changed automx to use 993/SSL and everything works.

Thunderbird supports SPECIAL-USE (Merry x-mas!)
I've waited about two years to write this mail... :) As of Dezember, 24th Mozilla Thunderbird can handle SPECIAL-USE. The patch, which adds the required functionality, has passed review and TBs nightly build was successful. The next official Thunderbird release (version 38, release date 2015-05-19) will very likely ship SPECIAL-USE included. \o/ SPECIAL USE is an IMAP extension. It means

Auto MX Email Client configuration, the right way?
Hi Friends! An opinion. I would like to facilitate the configuration of one's mail client (desktop or mobile) to my users server. Some time ago I asked the same question and you suggested me to use "Automx". So I started of good will and I looked for the Automx documentation. And here the problems started as I found several inconsistencies, even parameters (in official

IMAP-Proxy and LDAP?
I am doing some research on Dovecots IMAP-Proxy features mentioned in <http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ImapProxy> and <http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy>. The docs only mention SQL as backend to hold required data. Is it also possible to use LDAP? TIA, p at rick -- state of mind Agentur f?r Kommunikation, Design und Softwareentwicklung Patrick Koetter

Setting individual SSL/TLS settings with OpenLDAP
I am using OpenLDAP to read Dovecot User settings and want to use TLS for user_attrs and pass_attrs queries. So I set "tls = yes" and it kept failing until I told the OpenLDAP ldap client in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf where the CA certificate can be found. So far so good. Now just in case... could I tell dovecot to read the OpenLDAP client settings from a non default configuration file e.g.

Unsuccessful POP sessions on dovecot-1.0.3-13_60
A Client runs a RAS network. Users access mailboxes using Outlook Express. The server runs dovecot-1.0.3-13_60. Almost a week ago users began to report that they can't retrieve their mail. The session starts, they seem to retrieve messages, but then the client reports a problem and the session is terminated. Here's what I have in the log: May 28 08:56:46 server dovecot: pop3-login:

Calculate Index size for harddisk sizing
I need to get a hand on the 'usual size of an index' to do some hard disk sizing. Is that possible at all? I know their size depends a lot on what the clients index. Those clients will mostly be Outlook and Thunderbird and they will be doing more POP than IMAP if that helps to bring it down to some estimation. TIA, p at rick -- state of mind Agentur f?r Kommunikation, Design und

Out of the box: Thank you!
I've just enabled IMAP quota support on a LDAP userbase in about an hour. In this hour I read the Dovecot documentation on quota support, extended the customers LDAP schema, added a "mailQuota"-attribute and a value to all users, enabled the plugin in dovecot.conf, added the attribute query in dovecot-ldap.conf, reloaded the system and tested the functionality and ... everything

Howto set mail_location for system users over LDAP?
In parallel to /etc/passwd I do have my system users in LDAP. I want to store their messages in /srv/mail/state-of-mind/<username>. Dovecot has been configured to retrieve the extra field mail to override the mail_location setting. I can see in the log it retrieves the correct information as long as I run Dovecot deliver as Postfix service 'dovecot' as shown in section "Virtual

Konica Printer: Scan to File (Samba SMB share) fails
I am trying to let a Konica-Minolta Copy-Scanner-Printer store scanned stuff to a file. It works at once, if I let it send the file to a SMB share provided by a W2K workstation that is part of a (Samba) domain. It doesn't work, if I want it to store the messages on a share provided by the Samba server. So far I have verified that the user the scanner runs under is allowed to mount the share

Postfix, mailbox_command, Dovecot deliver, LDAP and mail_location
I am trying to tell Dovecot deliver to use $mail_location as the location to store mail for system users. From the docs I've read <http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation> I believe this is possible, but mail to my system users always gets delivered to their /home/<USERNAME> homedirectory. Here's what I've done so far: # Postfix main.cf mailbox_command =
