something missing in summary()
I just noticed that two key pieces of information are not given by
the summary() command: N and SD. we are given the N missing, but
not the converse. I know these summary value can be obtained easy,
but can't understand why these two pieces of information are not
provided with the other info.
Thanks,

product of vector elements
All,
I would like to find a simper method that I now have to find the
product of all elements in a vector:
#get product of vector elements: (1,2,3,4,5)
vec.product <- exp(sum(log(c(1,2,3,4,5))))
I have not found a vector product function, if one has been written.
Thanks,
Gerard

special symbols into a text string
All,
I am trying to put a few special symbols into a string to place on a graph (e.g., >= and superscript 2).
This clearly works, but does not look good: text<-c("x2", "A>=B")
I tried pasting in the >= symbol, but just comes out as an =.
I have tried expression() with no luck: text<-c("x2", expression(x^2))
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,

Customize axis labels in xyplot
Hello,
I'm plotting an xyplot where a continuous var recorded every min is plotted
on y, and time expressed as HH:MM:SS on x, as follows :
xaxis=list(tick.number=12,rot=90)
lst=list(x=xaxis)
xyplot(upt$LOAD_1 ~ upt$TIME, data=upt, type=c('g','p', 'r'), scales=lst)
On the x-axis, every time label is drawn and the label quickly become
unreadable as they overlap on each

problem with abline
Hi All,
I am running a scatter plot and trying to add a best fit line. I use an abline function, but get no line drawn over the points. I also get no error. I arm using V 2.10.0 on Windows 7.
Here is my code, including the SAS transport file import:
require (foreign)
require (chron)
require (Hmisc)
require (lattice)
clin <- sasxport.get("y:\\temp\\subset.xpt")

if statement problem
Hi All,
I have a small dataset named das (43 cases) in which I am trying to
create a binary outcome (1/0) based on the following code:
if (das$age>65 && das$bmi>30) {das$danger<-1} else das$danger<-0
I am setting a flag called 'danger' to 1 of the subject is over 65
and has a BMI > 30.
I find that my statement evaluates the first record in the data.frame

Creating appropriate time axis for data
Hello,
I am dealing with data stored in a database as a 'time' object. I
export the data from the database to a text file and utilize the
'time_to_sec()' function of the database to convert the human readable
time (HH:MM:SS) to seconds so that I can use R to do analysis and
create charts of the data. I do not need or use days or dates in the
data, and the data range is from

[HH] extending ancova function for 2 factors
Hi,
what would be a good way of enhancing the ancova function from the HH
package when using a 2 factor ANCOVA?
The current behaviour for the "ancova" function from package HH is:
----------------------------------------------
| P1 || P1 || P3 || P4 | | PS | <- the lattice strip
----------------------------------------------
| x|| x ||x ||x | |

Need a more efficient way to implement this type of logic in R
I have cobbled together the following logic. It works but is very
slow. I'm sure that there must be a better r-specific way to implement
this kind of thing, but have been unable to find/understand one. Any
help would be appreciated.
hh.sub <- households[c("HOUSEID","HHFAMINC")]
for (indx in 1:length(hh.sub$HOUSEID)) {
if ((hh.sub$HHFAMINC[indx] == '01')

Dovecot IMAPS : Thunderbird SSL cert issue / Evolution OK
Recently thunderbird and Dovecot IMAPS cannot agree on SSL however
Evolution, on the exact same system, is working fine with the same
accounts. Tried recreating the Dovecot cert and also the thunderbird
accounts from scratch. The OpenSSL raw client works fine as well.
Would someone also confirm the openssl commands to create a selfsigned
cert for dovecot imaps. They cert created does work

How to retrieve a vector of a data.frame's variable attributes?
Hi,
I have a data.frame with 100 variables and I have assigned a "label",
"units" and "category" attribute to each variable. I would like to reorder
the variables in the data.frame by the "category" attributes but can't find
a way.
For example, the first variable is:
> attributes(hh$aez)
$levels
[1] "coastal" "forest"

Dovecot IMAPS : Thunderbird SSL cert issue / Evolution OK
Hello,
This is a selfsigned cert. Both of the below methods were used.
May I ask for 1. pointer to info setting up "intermediate certs" and
where the certfile goes?
The objective is to generate a self-signed cert and use it for just
internal use with IMAPS dovecot.
Separately, what are your thoughts as to why evolution works and
thunderbird does not?
Thank you,

Dovecot IMAPS : Thunderbird SSL cert issue / Evolution OK
I would expect the public cert to be imported as a "server" not an "auth"
The attached image shows that TBird wants an httpS url for a webserver,
for the source.
Ages ago, I think it prompted for "do you want to trust this new cert"
and YES added it (assuming that is the public key) to the server list.?
A bit confused by this.

Recodificar datos faltantes
Hola a todos
La cuestión es una tontería, me gustaría recodificar los NA (valores
faltantes) por el valor 0
He probado varias cosas del estilo:
> hh<-c(2,3,4,NA,4)
> replace(hh,which(hh==NA),0)->hh
> hh
[1] 2 3 4 NA 4
Conocéis alguna forma.

How to eliminate for next loops in this script
I needed to compute a complicated cross tabulation to show weighted means
and standard deviations and the only method I could get that worked uses a
series of nested for next loops. I know that there must be a better way to
do so, but could use some assistance pointing the way.
Here is my working, but inefficient script:

rm(list=ls())
load('NHTS.Rdata')

HH.EXE location
This is related to my post about .chm where vitamin set me on the right path.
http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=1026
Since then I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 and wine.
While perusing the virgin registry I noticed the chm.file ...command key was: C:\windows\system32\hh.exe %1
There is no hh.exe located in that directory. The hh.exe file is located in the C:\windows\ directory.

use zoo package with multiple column data sets
Readers,
I am trying to use the zoo package with an array of data:
file1:
hh:mm:ss 1
hh:mm:ss 2
hh:mm:ss 3
hh:mm:ss 4
file2:
hh:mm:ss 11 55
hh:mm:ss 22 66
hh:mm:ss 33 77
hh:mm:ss 44 88
I wanted to merge these data set so I tried the following commands:
library(chron)
library(zoo)
z1<-read.zoo("path/to/file1.csv",header=TRUE,sep=",",FUN=times)
