Separate access to different "folders" of the same mailbox?
Hello Timo and everyone, I think on such an idea that may save me a bit of space and time: in my company we have a mailbox that holds a copy of every message that our SMTP processed. While it eats a lot of space, it saved us several times when, you may imaging, user "suddenly" deleted the most important message in his life and call our IT guys for help. The mailbox contains

Proxy secured incoming POP3/IMAP4 to unsecure backend?
The port is determined with port=nnn setting. You can't return per-protocol port like that, you need to look at the protocol requested by user and return port based on that, or you can omit port to default into "standard port". not using ssl/starttls is default. > On 17 September 2018 at 16:35 Alexander Chekalin <alexander.chekalin at gmail.com> wrote: > > >

Proxy secured incoming POP3/IMAP4 to unsecure backend?
Hi, I try to set up dovecot as a proxy server, to proxy requests to several dovecot-based backend servers. I wand external clients who connects to this proxy Dovecot to use TLS (this is easy to set up) while want to have unsecured (plain IMAP/POP) connections to backends. You see, links to backends are over LAN so no TLS needed, and these backends are poor old machines (with old Docecots like

Proxy secured incoming POP3/IMAP4 to unsecure backend?
auth process receives the protocol requested when performing authentication as variable %s (see https://wiki2.dovecot.org/Variables) You can use this to choose the value you return for port. MBOX to MAILDIR conversion
Thinking about going from mbox to maildir. Started with mbox way back when but thinking about making the conversion. The main reason is that I use rsync for backups and when these huge mailboxes are touched I have to copy the whole thing. With maildir I only copy the files that change. So - my questions is - what's the easiest way to make this happan. I assume there are conversion

Alternate mail_location prefix for homedir
Hi, I'm switching from UW-imap to dovecot 2.0.1 and was wondering about the mail_location config: mail_location = mbox:~/.:INBOX=/var/mail/%u Notice '.' in '~/.' above. This seems to resolve the ~/mail problem when switching from UW-imap (ie, no 'mail' prefix). doc/wiki/Migration.UW.txt doesn't mention using '~/.', so I was wondering whether there are

Please advise on very fast search
Hello, I try to create some kind of mail backup system. What I need is system that will store mail for the whole domain, and allow me to restore messages from/to specified email at that domain. The scheme is pretty simple: on our main mail server the SMTP server itself has a rule to send a copy of every message to 'backup at backupserver.host', and the backupserver.host domain is

Homedir for sieve/LDAP
I'm somewhat confused regarding Home Directories needed by sieve and setting them for an LDAP userdb. We have system users, passdb ldap, userdb ldap, but home directories are not mounted on the mail server. Now apparently, sieve needs the home directory for .dovecot.lda-dupes. Is there an easier way to give lda/sieve a home directory than setting something along the lines of

Error in IMAP command GETACL: Unknown command..
Hi all, I have just installed dovecot on my Fedora Core 2 box. I would like to use it only for reading archived email from within my Mozilla 1.7.3. I syminked my old opera-files (*.mbs whoch seems to be same as mbox) into ~/mail. Seems to work fine, mostly I can open the mailfiles - sometimes it hangs with the following error: The current command did not succeed. The mailserver responded:

Rsync speed over network.

I am moving mail servers so I must copy /var/spool/mail/ over to the other machine. I understand and have used locally the copy methods(manpage is good) but I need to ask what will be the fstest possible

No duplicates on imap copy?
Hello, when from my script I try to copy messages from one imap folder into another own (within the same imap mailbox). That works perfectly, but... If I copy the same message N times from one folder into another one, in the destination folder I see N copies of the same message, each with its own UID. I wonder if there any way to deduplicate folder content (so in the destination folder

Unique message IDs?
Hello, I'm working with indexing my mail box. What I need is to have index in which mailing specified header string is located. I work with the messages via IMAP. I know that sounds like FTS can help me but no, I don't want to index whole message nor I want to patch FTS source to make it to index headers only. I need a way to identify message across my mail box. The idea is that I

Strange behaviour when add new mailbox to IMAP (v 1.2.13)
Hi, I think I need to ask you for advice. Personally I face that for the first time and hardly imagine this could be possible at all, but... My setup is simple: I have one mail server where all of my mail accounts are stored, and another one to store backup of all mailings. The scheme is simple, SMTP on first server forwards a copy of each message to address catchall at

Upgrade Question about mail_location
Hi, I plan on upgrading from 1.1.13 to 1.2.4 using an RPM. I have read the wiki [1] and have a question about the mail_location variable. Currently, in 1.1.13, I use: mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes/%h with virtual mailboxes. However, I am planning to change it to use: home=/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes mail_location = maildir:%h as part of the new configuration. Is

Question about mail_location
In using mysql, in the configuration file we need to specify, in the user query, '/path/ as home, yet but in dovecot.conf, we also are setting mail_location, the same thing is it not, so unless I've missed something, do we still need to use the path as home in the user query? Do we only need set that if it differs from mail_location? Thanks

Cyrus mailbox (plain files) to Dovecot
Hi, I'm migrating from a Cyrus to a Dovecot installation right now. As part of it I've got plain Cyrus mailboxes (w/o real metadata; so to say I've got the /var/spool/imap/user part but not the /var/lib/imap/user one)). Those former mailboxes I want to provide under a public namespace via ACLs. The question I cannot answer right now is: How can I convert these plain mailboxes on a FS

Transitioning away from mail_location = maildir:~
Hi, I have been using this setup for years: mail_home = /var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n mail_location = maildir:~ I have since learned that mail_home and mail_location should be different. I plan to use this: mail_home = /var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n mail_location = maildir:~/mail I would like the transition to be transparent for my email clients. I don't want mail/directories/sieve_scripts to
