working with texts
WinXP, R-2.9.1 LS., I have been trying to solve a (for me) tricky issue. No matter what I've tried, I just can't find a way to do this. This is the issue: I have a text file (ansi text) "titles.txt" with lines of text; here is an example of such a file: >>>>> a brief history of polio vaccines anti-vaccination movements and their interpretations early warning

question on lmer function
suppose something like probability(passing test) is driven by 1. fixed effects -- sex 2. district effects - district funding 3. school effects - neighborhood income, racial composition, % two parent families, ... 4. class effects - teacher quality measurement, 5. individual random effects - IQ. how would such a model be setup in lmer? I can't find much discussion on the

Theil decomposition
I came across the package 'ineq' that computes a variety of inequality measures (e.g. gini, theil etc). I want to compute the Theil index (racial segregation) and decompose the total into sub-components (by geog levels). I think the package doesn't report the decomposition (correct me if I'm wrong). Just wonder is that available elsewhere? K.

using latticeExtra plotting confidence intervals
I am wanting to plot a 95% confidence band using segplot, yet I am wanting to have groups. For example if I have males and females, and then I have them in different races, I want the racial groups in different panels. I have this minor code, completely made up but gets at what I am wanting, 4 random samples and 4 samples of confidence, I know how to get A & B into one panel and C&D in to

Help - linear regression
Hi, I am trying a linear regression model where the dependent variable is the size of the heart corrected for the patient's height and weight. This is labelled as LAVI. The independent variables are race (european or non-eurpoean), age, sex (male or female) of the patient and whether they have diabetes and high blood pressure. sample size 2000 patients selected from a community. when I

Conjoint in R
Hello all, I am trying to apply a conjoint analysis in order to determine the best profile that captures the most preferred combination of levels of given categorical factors. For this a set of factors is given and initially a fractional factorial design has to be produced as a subset of all possible factor levels combinations, sufficient to estimate the main effects utilities. Then the

Problems with numeric variable containing ? values
Hello, I have a problem with the values for one column in a table. The variable represented in this column is numeric (I get TRUE when I ask is.numeric(x)). However, the values are listed ordinally and with row numbers as values, not with the ones that appear in the table. Some rows have an undefined value for this column, which appears as ? in the table (this is not an error). I wonder whether

For Whom the Gaza Bell Tolls -- Part 1 and 2 -- Obama’s Mideast Jewish Wet Dream Team
For Whom the Gaza Bell Tolls -- Part 1 By Edmund Connelly for The Occidental Observer January 16, 2008 ?The Israelis can kill whomever they want whenever they want.? --Paul Craig Roberts I sometimes think that it?s pointless for Americans to talk much about recent events in Gaza because we know how it will play out ? indexing within the function "aggregate"
Hi all, I'm trying to work out the following problem, but I can't imagine how. I have the following (much reduced & oversimplified) dataset My.df <- cbind.data.frame(PPM=c(15.78, 15.81, 15.87, 15.83, 15.81, 15.84, 15.91, 15.90, 15.83, 15.81, 15.93, 15.83, 15.70, 15.92, 15.76, 15.81, 15.91, 15.75, 15.84, 15.86, 15.82, 15.79,

Disrupting UPS hardware
Some of you may remember me as a NUT contributor years back - I did a significant amount of work on documentation, and later moved the repository from Subversion to GIT. I eventually drifted away from the project in large part because I found the lossage from lazy, least-cost-is-everything product designs too annoying to deal with. I recently had a bad experience with a UPS that brought all my

random effects in logistic regression (lmer)-- identification question
Hello R users! I've been experimenting with lmer to estimate a mixed model with a dichotomous dependent variable. The goal is to fit a hierarchical model in which we compare the effect of individual and city-level variables. I've run up against a conceptual problem that I expect one of you can clear up for me. The question is about random effects in the context of a model fit with a
