Gaining performance by disabling functionality?
As most Wine users probably know, running applications using Wine won't (in most cases) give you the same performance as running the application in native Windows. From my experience this is especially true when it comes to applications that make use of Direct3D, and I suppose the performance drop is (at least in part) due to the translation of Direct3D to OpenGL in Wine. Now, this got me

Using memdisk to remotely flash BIOS
I am using memdisk to remotely flash the BIOS and other firmware. It works well for most flash programs. After the flash I need to initialize the NIC to send a signal to my management server that the flash is complete. I am curious as to how others have solved this problem. Thanks.

Windows TAP driver issues
While I'm aware that tinc is known to have problems with the latest Windows TAP driver (NDIS 6), we want to run tinc on Windows server 2016 which doesn't support NDIS 5 drivers. Since using the old version of the TAP driver is not an option, I'd like to better understand the issues with tinc and the NDIS 6 TAP driver. Can anyone point me to a discussion of the known issues? wireless card for CentOS
Hi, I'll need to buy a new wireless card. I need a recommendation for PCMCIA wireless card that simply works with CentOS out of the box. By "works out of the box", I mean that it doesn't need ndis wrapper (or whatever it is called), kernel hacks, or whatever. Thanks

Error running Guild Wars with .9.3
Hello all, I gave this a stab a few months ago but gave up and just set up a dual boot. I'm running low on disk space now and tired of messing with the muliple partitions, so I'm giving it another go to get Guild Wars running in Linux. I'm runing Wine 0.9.3 on Kubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake). I'm able to go through the instillation without issue, but when it actually tries to

Linux TCP Checksum offload limitations
Some version of Windows appear to give the network adapter driver a packet broken up into fairly small pieces, eg Page 0: 14 bytes of Ethernet Header Page 1: 20 bytes of IP Header Page 2: 20 bytes of TCP Header Page 3: 1460 bytes of TCP Data When this happens, Linux appears to not pass the packets beyond the vifX.Y interface - a tcpdump on (say) vif455.0 shows packets but a tcpdump on eth0 does

error in NVidia driver
Hello! I'm trying to run Sacred Underworld game in Wine, it works almost fine (especially with latest Wine 0.9.17 where DX7 was fixed), until it crash in libGL.so. According to attached log file, process crashes in glTexImage2D() function. I think this is problem in proprietary NVidia driver and post the report on NVidia Linux forum and NVidia Linux support. Unfortunately, there was no

MSCDEX over NDIS ethernet
I would like to implement a replacement MSCDEX driver (based on the replacement in FreeDOS SHSUCDX http://johnson.tmfc.net/freedos/shsucdx.html and SYSLINUX) however instead of talking to disk BIOS calls or PATA chipset I would like it to talk to the NDIS driver and act as a TFTP client simply forfulling application get block requests through TFTP. Its not clear where the ISO9660 CD
