You could, like the rest of us, simply skim past a post not interesting to you. Oh, but then you wouldn't get to show off how clever you are with your use of "crAppStore"!

Mac markdown editor that saves as .txt (John Laudun)
John, you've hit the nail on the head here. I finally know I can manually
change my files to the .txt extension (thanks to helpful suggestions here),
but it would be excellent if MMD Composer:
a) had an option in the drop-down to save with the .txt extension, and
b) had a preference the user could set to choose the default file extension
for all files.
It would increase ease of

Markdown, SmartyPants and Wordpress?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I'm redesigning my site and considering moving from Movable Type to
WP, but many of my entries are in Markdown. I really, really like
Markdown and SmartyPants. I've not used Textile much, but Markdown
feels more natural to me; also, I love SmartyPants because I'm a
stickler for curly quotes.
I understand there's a Markdown

Any switchers from mod_perl
Good afternoon,
I have been developing in mod_perl for many years, and my livelihood is based on
being productive with it. I''ve spent the past week reading and testing RoR and
it does look good. But before I take the plunge for my next project, I was
hoping to hear from other mod_perl switchers.
One of the main reasons I like mod_perl is code flexibility. I like being able

Markdown for Wordpress?
Does anyone know which version of Markdown is best for Wordpress? I
see online that there are a few and was wondering which one people
prefer. Also, is there any chance John Gruber will write an official
Markdown plugin for Wordpress, given how popular it's becoming?

BBEdit Ruby & Rails Syntax Module available
I''ve made a Ruby & Rails syntax coloring module for BBEdit. This is a
"Codeless Language Module", so it will only work with BBEdit 8+. It''s
basically a giant list of Ruby and Rails keywords, method names, and
so on. It''s both Ruby and Rails because BBedit only lets you
associate a file type with one language module.
The file is available here:

Convince me to buy TextMate!
I got a Powerbook recently and am debating buying TextMate. I installed
the trial and have checked it out, but don''t see what''s so great about
it. AFAICS it''s the Ruby and Rails macros for expansion and other stuff
that might be it. Other than that, TextMate seems like a pretty basic
editor. I currently use PSPad and Editplus, and I could probably
get/make macros

[patch] Headers, unresolved footnotes, and fractions
Hi folks, thanks for the useful code!
I've added some functionality to PHP Markdown Extra and PHP
SmartyPants. Diffs attached.
For PHP Markdown Extra:
*A new config option, MARKDOWN_HEADER_BASE, which sets the largest
header level that Markdown can generate and defaults to 1; useful if
you use <h1> for site-wide elements and want Markdown-generated
headers to start at

replacing " with "
Python-markdown currently replaces all straight quotes (`"`) with the
html entity (`"`). Someone recently complained about this in a
[bug report][]. As it turns out the quote was the symptom that brought
the real problem to light[^1]. In any event, the reporter pointed out
that markdown.pl does not replace straight quotes with the html
entity. I know John Gruber has mentioned before

PHP SmartyPants Typographer 1.0b2
As I stated before, I had in the work a utility to control spaces
around punctuation and at some other places. Now, I've integrated it,
with a few extra quote goodies, within PHP SmartyPants, as an
extension just like PHP Markdown Extra extends PHP Markdown.
And so appeared SmartyPants Typographer (announcement on my weblog)

Spaced text (from Digest)
On the suggestion for double-spaces, I share the general 'oh
no'. I see an explosion of people with iPads etc trying out
Markdown in education because formatting sucks on iPads. They
struggle with needing new lines (see recent post for an
example). In short, they struggle with white-space (invisible) mark-up.
Added to that, frequently cut and paste leaves double spaces (eg

needs must make MD ignore my PHP
I need to exclude arbitrary chunks of my documents from Markdown
parsing, because my documents are littered with <?php blah blah ?>,
and a few other oddities. These blocks get gifted with unwanted
markup by Markdown:
<?php blah blah ?> becomes <p><?php blah blah ?></p>
If I can't make it stop that, it's a dealbreaker for me in an

When is a site too small for Rails?
Hey, folks.
Mainly, I''m looking for some guidance here. A couple months ago the
buzz around Rails become too much for me, and I finally decided to
give in and learn the framework. This was all very new to me -- most
of my focus in the past couple years has been solely in design with
static XHTML + CSS. I dabbled in PHP, but nothing significant.
Well, I love Rails, and it

PDF output
Markdown speaks to a project I've engaged for nearly a decade. Ever
since I cobbled up an Apple Newton keyboard to connect to my Pilot
5000, I wanted to type plain text with formatting for later printing.
Class notes and such. Once I wrote a complex WordPerfect script using
custom markup. For a while I wrote raw TeX, relying on a macro file to
simplify things only a little.

Menu using Scriptaculous Effects = OnMouseOver bug
I am trying to achieve a Flash-like menu with OnMouseOver effects on
3 divs below. Unfortunately, the javascript resets when the mouse is
rolled over the text and if you go mouse crazy on the divs, the
script seems to remember where it cut off, and doesn''t roll down
completely afterwards.
Is it a good place to ask for help? I couldn''t find any Scriptaculous
