UNIX Server Not Seen In Network Nieghborhood
AIX 5.1 / Samba 2.2.5 / Active Directory DNS & WINS servers
The Samba server is only a client and is not configured to be a WINS / DNS / PASSWORD server to PCs. It passes all these requests to W2K AD.
Problem: The Samba server cannot be seen in Network Neighborhood / My Network Places when browsing.
Debug: Samba server has a valid name / IP address entry(s) in DNS and WINS. Can get to

Problems with password authentication on Samba as an AD-Member
Hello,
I've got some problems with a Samba Server. The Samba Server is member
in an Active-Directory Domain (Win2000), it is NOT the domaincontroller.
Authentication is kerberos-based (smb.conf: securty=ADS, winbind). The
Sambaserver is accessed by Windows-Clients, that are domainmembers and
by some Windows-Client, that are not. Originally Users, who were logged
on the domain could access

profiles and home directories
Howdy All,
I have read with interest the problems that some people have with profiles
and XP ( service pack 2 included ) in getting them to work.
I, however, have not had any such trauma's ( thank goodness) and the
smb.conf file listed below works a treat.
The problem I have is people using profiles over several vpn connections (
just to slow ).
So now I am in the situation of wanting to turn

Samba and ESX 3.2 update 4
Hi there,
Currently Samba 3.20.b (SLES 9.3) is running in a standalone server in AMD64 platform. Users from Windows platform can create/delete NFS files without logging into the Samba server, username exist in the sambaserver but no password is required to map a share e.g. \\sambaserver\sharename. We would like to move to VMware ESX 3.2 update 4 platform running in x86-64 platform.

Problem with [homes] under 3.0.23x
Hello,
I found another strange problem while migrating from 3.0.22 to 3.0.23x
(with 'x' eq 'd' now):
I can't access my [homes]-share anymore - if i try, the samba-server
prompts me for a password. What *is* working is accessing the same
directory as [<username>]...
E.g.: \\Sambaserver\matthias works whereas
\\Sambaserver\homes works *not*

winxp roaming profiles and samba group access rights
Howdy People,
I have a problem with roaming profiles in samba 3.0.5 on redhat9 (
installed from the rpm with rpm -Uv samba.3.0.5.rpm
I am not using LDAP ( dont know how and as I am a Netware person on a very
steep learning curve with Samba, didn't want to complicate the
installation after seeing every second posting on this list as a ldap
problem).
The smb.conf file is listed below.

[SOLVED] Samba 4: 'Access denied' error when accessing user profile during logon
Hello Louis,
In fact, the shares mentioned in my original messages are used in
Windows-only.
The accounts, however, are used in both Windows and Unix-type
environments (we have quite a zoo of OSes in active use); so we actually
use the Posix part of accounts for attributes and Kerberos component to
authenticate in all non-Windows use.
So my primary intent is to make the homes/profiles shares

Dear all,
___Setup:

worked on 2.x-stable)
- Samba PDC (CVS 3.0.0rc2) (machine accounts added aswell as users in
unix & samba)
- OpenLDAP (2.1.12) <-- (Not really relevant since I tried without ldap
too, so no info about that from this point)

[SOLVED] Samba 4: 'Access denied' error when accessing user profile during logon
Hai,
Sorry to say but..
> The solution (following the default how-to directories structure):
No, the solution is to setup correctly.
Just do a a small test here to see if its all correct.
With a windows computer, browse to \\server
Right klik the profiles share, check security.
If this is set correct, the user should not be able to see the rights.
Repaet, now as Adminsitrator.

WG: Create user home directory or user-own folder on sambaserver on first login to samba
Hello
In the [homes] section at first with root preexec=/path/to/script
Ex:
[homes]
Root preexec=/scripts/./firstlogon
In the firstlogon this could be:
#!/bin/bash
#probe if $1=user exist and his home share
If test -d /users/$1
Then
#write only to log file
Echo "$1 User and Share exist" >> /somewhere/logfile
#if not exist make it
Else
Mkdir /users/$1
Chmod -R 700 /users/S1

local admin rights for roaming profiles
Hi.
I have a samba server designed to PDC on my network. The roaming
profiles is enabled and work fine. But some apps used from the samba
server share, apparently need to the user in the station have admin
privileges. Im enabling in the station (XP or Win7) the admin
privileges to the station asigned user (DOMAIN\user) but in that case,
the roaming profile is not a complete solution, because

Can connect directly, but not browse samba server from Windows Workgroup network
Dear Samba gurus,
I have a Fedora 8 linux server, running samba 3.0.28a-0.fc8. I am
doing the simplest thing of all - exposing a public read-only share
within MS Workgroup environment. My server has a fixed local IP
address (192.168.1.200) and it's on the same subnet as the rest of the
machines. The server and machines are connected to a 24 port CISCO
switch.
My problem is that I can

Problem creating root ldap user in SLES9
Hello,
I am running Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9, and I am
trying to get Samba to authenticate using LDAP. I am
using the YaST system tool to configure the LDAP server,
LDAP client, and SAMBA.
The issue I am having is that after I configure the Samba
server to use the LDAP backend it prompts me for a
password creation for the root user. This root user will
be added to the LDAP

[SOLVED] Samba 4: 'Access denied' error when accessing user profile during logon
Hai,
Now, i did not know you used the DC for the profiles here but yes it looks good.
Small comment on point 3 and 4.
3) Its good, you might notice a few more rights there compaired to what i posted,
thats because you have your profiles on the DC but the settings are good.
4) yes, the security is ok, i like the higher security setting and try to mimic the windows settings as much as

mounting as cifs not working in Debian, works in Windows though
I have a Debian machine running Unstable acting as a samba server. The
server was installed a few days ago after a reinstall of the OS. The
older installation's samba configs were backed up and restored after
installation.
The Samba shares are accessible if I access them from a Windows 7
client. The shares, however, cannot be accessed from a Debian client
(newly installed amd64 Testing).

Glitches adding homedir profiles to a samba share with AD MMC?
Hi all,
We have a mixed network environment with Samba servers providing file
storage for windows, Linux and MAC 0SX users. Authentication is
handled by Active Directory on Win2K SP. On our campus we allow
computer lab teachers to add users via the Active Directory MMC.
However we have a couple of issues which make this far from seamless:
After users are added to AD, the lab admin will add a
