[perf-discuss] help diagnosing system hang
Interresting... I wonder what differs between your system and mine. With my dirt-simple stress-test:
server1# zpool create X25E c1t15d0
server1# zfs set sharenfs=rw X25E
server1# chmod a+w /X25E
server2# cd /net/server1/X25E
server2# gtar zxf /var/tmp/emacs-22.3.tar.gz
and a fully patched X42420 running Solaris 10 U7 I still see these errors:

Diagnosing Permanent Errors
I would like to get some help diagnosing permanent errors on my files. The machine in question has 12 1TB disks connected to an Areca raid card. I installed OpenSolaris build 134 and according to zpool history, created a pool with

I then backed up 806G of files to the machine, and had

Matrix multiplication
Hi,
I have a transition matrix T for which I want to find the steady state matrix for. This could be approximated by taking T^n , for large n.
T= [ 0.8797 0.0382 0.0527 0.0008
0.0212 0.8002 0.0041 0.0143
0.0981 0.0273 0.8802 0.0527
0.0010 0.1343 0.0630 0.9322]
According to a text book I have T^200 should have reached the steady state L

diagnosing download.file() problems
I'm accessing around 95 tar files on an FTP server ranging in size between
10 and 40MB a piece.
while certainly can click on them and download them outside of R, I'd like
to have my script do it.
Retrieving the ftp directory with RCurl works fine (about 90% of the time)
but downloading the files by looping through all the files is a random
process.
I may get 1-8 files download and then

SMB throughput inquiry, Jeremy, and James' bow tie
I went to the site to subscribe again and ended up watching some of
Jeremy's Google interviews. I particularly enjoyed the interview with
James and the bow tie lesson at the end. :)
So anyway, I recently upgraded my home network to end-to-end GbE. My
clients are Windows XP SP3 w/hot fixes, and my Samba server is 3.5.6
atop vanilla kernel.org Linux 3.2.6 and Debian 6.0.6.

[LLVMdev] Proposal for a Google summer of code project for the Java frontend.

That's more or less true: generating shared libraries will improve
startup time, not steady-state time. It will decrease steady-state
performance (both for

[LLVMdev] Proposal for a Google summer of code project for the Java frontend.
I would prefer to see actual code to make safe schedules. With code I can see
what changes one must make. I can also show in detail these changes,
which would give security to the LLVM project that the proposal is
viable. By contrast,
without code, neither me nor LLVM project can ensure that the project will
be successfully performed behind schedule. Since this is a difficult
project (we

Erratic behavior on 24T zpool
Well, I''ve searched my brains out and I can''t seem to find a reason for this.
I''m getting bad to medium performance with my new test storage device. I''ve got 24 1.5T disks with 2 SSDs configured as a zil log device. I''m using the Areca raid controller, the driver being arcmsr. Quad core AMD with 16 gig of RAM OpenSolaris upgraded to snv_134.

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has used the msm package to compute the steady

Problems with TDBs on CTDB-managed Samba instance
Hi Jeremy,
Thanks so much for your reply! As a matter of fact, we did just that around 3:45p yesterday when our CTDB cluster was unable to self-heal from the latest in this series of failover events. Here's how the situation went down:
1) We saw flapping identical to that described in my original post
2) After about 30 minutes of waiting, CTDB was just spinning with `smbd` repeatedly

Is there any software that can be run in windows to monitor icecast mounts, ie, user count etc..
I swear I seen one before but I can't remember where.

Noise Cancellation of Server Noise
Has anyone come across a device that could cancel out the noise from servers, ie. the fan noise? I have a server rack near my office and would like to see if i can decrease the noise level. It would seem to me that the steady drone of the fans could be cancelled out to a large extent.

40 second delay on automounts with 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 kernel
after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on
automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to
autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel.
i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has
jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm

ZFS works in waves
A little back story: I have a Norco DS-1220, a 12 bay SATA box, it is
connected to eSATA (SiI3124) via PCI-X two drives are straight
connections, then the other two ports go to 5x multipliers within the
box. My needs/hopes for this was using 12 500GB drives and ZFS make a
very large & simple data dump spot on my network for other servers to
rsync to daily & use zfs snapshots for

[llvm-mca] What's the difference between Rthroughput and "total cycles" in llvm-mca
What is the difference between the two? I thought "Rthroughput" is
basically the number of cycles required to execute a single iteration at
steady state, but this does not seem to match with the schedule/timeline
generated by llvm-mca.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

slow usb hard disk performance.
Dear All,
I tried a USB2 Maxtor One touch II external hard disk on a couple of my
Centos 4.2 boxes and found it initiallised the SCSI subsystem ok and
added device "sda". But the performance is miserable, yet the same
hardware running XP the performance is satisfactory.
HDPARM gives results varying from 120k/sec to , at its peak 4.75M/s on a
USB 2 machine, still very poor by any

Physical or Statistical Explanation for the "Funnel" Plot?
The R code below produces (after running for a few minutes on a decent computer) the plot shown at the following location:
http://n2.nabble.com/Is-there-a-physical-and-quantitative-explanation-for-this-plot--td2542321.html
I'm just taking the mean of a given set of random variables, where the set size is increased. There appears to be a quick convergence and then a pretty steady variance
