upgrade broke XP workstation logins, variably
Help please, a file server was upgraded from:
  Mandriva 2007.1, Samba 3.0.24-2.7mdv2007.1
to
  Mandriva 2008.1, Samba 3.0.28a-2.1mdv2008.1
and it broke something badly.
After the upgrade logins from all XP workstations broke - some of the
time. For an existing account (one with a profile already in the home
directory) sometimes it will login normally. Well, almost normally, it
never seems

Maruson power net 1500 support?
I recently took over maintenance of a linux computer which is drawing
power from a "Maruson Power Net 1500" UPS. However, there is currently
no monitoring or control of the UPS by this (or any other) computer.
Can nut control this device? There are serial, usb, and EPO connectors
on the back of the unit. (There may be a manual but I'm going to have
to hunt for it.)
Thanks,

mdadm --readonly which device in halt?
Setting up nut on a system where an LVM volume holds the root
filesystem.. What is the appropriate device form to use with "mdadm
--readonly" in halt? This is on a CentOS 5 system. So far I have found
three possibilities, but I do not know which one (if any) will still be
valid that late in the halt procedure:
1. /dev/md0 (from posts on the net)
2.

parallel administration tool for PCs?
This is a bit off topic, but I'm looking for a convenient way to manage
N "identical" Windows PCs, using as much as possible 1 command to do the
same thing on all of them. The capabilities I'm looking for, preferably
in a single tool are, given a designated master machine and N clones of
that master:
1. Compare all (or to a specified depth) files below some directory on

netlogon initially fails after moving samba server to new machine.
Yesterday I migrated a Samba server from one machine running
Samba 3.0.13 (on Mandrake 10.0) to another running 3.0.20-3
(on Mandriva 2006). The contents of:
 /etc/samba/* (all the .conf files)
 /usr/local/samba/private/* (secrets.pdb, smbpasswd)
were moved intact from one machine to the other, as was all
of the user data. I even checked md5sums - no changes to any
of the samba files. Then

Re: netlogon initially fails after moving samba server to new machine.
Well this is even more interesting. Parts of the profile are
not being saved back to the server, at least for existing
users. For instance,
1. login
2. change the start menu to "classic view"
3. rearrange the desktop
4. logout
5. login again
start menu is back as it was and it isn't classic view any more.
Very strange. Wipe the test profile on the server and the copy

Slow "run as ...", firewall issues.
After doing some system work, including upgrading the Samba server to
3.0.28a from 3.0.24, upgrading the kernel to 2.6.24, and changing the
firewall rulesk, the XP workstations which belong to that domain, the
right click "run as ..." option is slow to bring up a dialog. The
phenotype is this:
right click some program (for instance, a shortcut to the
  "command prompt")

Machines randomly kicks out of the domain
Hello
Sorry to ask here, but all googeling doesn't helped. We have several samba domains (samba 3.5.6) with ldap backed and windows 7 clients, which worked fine so far. Know we begin to see that random machines begin to kick out of the domain with the error:
_netr_ServerAuthenticate3: netlogon_creds_server_check failed. Rejecting auth request from client MBBUCHHALTUNG04 machine account

Windows Vista keeps on deleting cached roaming profile
I have a couple of Windows Vista Computers that i freshly (re)installed,
updated to SP2 + all updates, and joined to my domain...
i also got an empty profile on the server (the storage folder is there, but
there are no files inside)
When i log into the domain Windows creates all files and folders just fine
and stores a cache of that profile in c:\users\username (like it should),
And when i log

upgraded 3.0.28a-2 to 3.4.7-0.2, profile desktop configuration no longer saved
Upgraded a Samba server from 3.0.28a-2 to 3.4.7-0.2. Initially the XP
workstations could not log on (not finding machine account) then
discovered a new "passdb" variable, so added to smb.conf:
 passdb backend = smbpasswd
and also changed all browseable -> browsable. Restarted the server.
Domain logins worked. Test files saved to desktop are retained between
logins (are stored in

Samba 3.0.9 not authenticating completely
I'm relatively new to samba I have been experimenting for a week or so,
though I have setup several 2000/NT domains and have been using Linux
for a couple of years.
I'm using Red Hat 9, updated completely via apt.
Samba 3.0.9 installed from apt and i am using the stock ldap server that
installed with red hat as my back end.
I followed the samba.idealx.org guide to get to where I am

samba3.0+pdc+ldap adding machines to domain
Has anyone had any luck adding machine accounts from w2k to a samba 3.0
pdc? I posted the issue last week, as I noticed others were encountering
the same problem. The weird thing is I had it working on a box before.
But this time I'm using pam_ldap to avoid local unix accounts, and it
wont work. I copied the config over from the box that was working, made
changes for the different config

Changing password from Windows
Hello,
I have a working samba (2.0.7) server (Debian GNU/Linux 2.2)
configured with security = user, but NOT domain. The clients are
Windows 98.
I whish windows users to be able to change their password
without logging on the server (unix account on the server are
disabled). I tried from the Password applet of the Control
Panel, but I was able only to change the password stored on the

Request for added functionality - tracking and blocking attacks
Somebody please forward this, if this is not an appropiate place
to ask the OpenSSH developers for a new feature.
As many of us have seen, any sshd left open on the internet eventually
becomes the target of password guessing attacks. I am aware of
tools for scanning the security logs, and manipulating iptables to
block ongoing attacks, but I am not aware of a way to configure
sshd itself to

Debian Lenny - Samba 3.2.5 + OpenLDAP (slapd) 2.4.11
I have a serous problem.
I have for some time now tried to get an SAMBA based Domain Controller
working.
I have tried with OpenLDAP and tdbsam as backend, but I get the same
error every time.
I wood prefer to use LDAP as my backend.
I have read tons of how-to SAMBA + LDAP, but non of the seams to work
for my, is there someone that maybe can see what I have done rung in
my config.?

Who's doing what?
All,
Is there any way of telling which machine is doing what job? i.e. Domain
Controller, local master, wins server etc.
I have two machines and two workgroups but they both appear on the same
workgroup. I think it is something to do with which machine is doing what. I
think machine1 is acting as Domain Controller & Master Browser for
workgroup1 and Machine2 is loosing all the browse

Clear text authentication impossible???
We have an Exchange 5.5 server in our Samba 3 domain und want to have POP3
access with clear text authentication from clients.
But no kind of credentials is accepted.
It did a level 10 log on the Samba server and found my clear text password
in the log (in nt_chal_resp and lm_chal_resp fields) during authentication.
Is it possible that Samba can't handle the clear-text pass-through from
