tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
Hi,
I can't get access to any shares when running "smbclient //DUCK/test -U
Dominic". I'm getting the message:
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
I'm pretty sure it's authenticating properly as it says "session setup ok"
in the debug output. If I enter the wrong password I get:
"session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE"

groupadd failure
The munin rpms from EPEL failed to install correctly on a particular
machine. This is why
# /usr/sbin/groupadd -r munin
groupadd: Can't get unique system GID (no more available GIDs)
#
but I don't understand why this happens. Even after checking the man pages
for groupadd and login.defs, I have been unable to determine what the
settings for SYS_GID_MIN/SYS_GID_MAX on RHEL/CentOS are.

LDAP useradd command?
Hi,
Is there an equivalent of a useradd for systems that are using LDAP user
management? I know I can build an LDIF file and import it, but it is a bit
of a pain to do it manually all the time.
Is there not an easier / faster way?
Thanks,
Eric

groupadd failure
Sorry, I didn't read what you said carefully enough -- it's trying to
create a system group. Still, looking inside of /etc/group to see what
system groups already exist is probably a good idea.

blocked ports 445 and 139 make printer-shares very slow
Hi,
do ports 445 and 139 (incoming) have to be open for the samba server's
IP on WinXP client side (all WinXP clients are using netbios over
TCP/IP)? F-Secure 7.10 blocks all incoming microsoft-ds (445) and
netbios-ssn (139) by default, which ends up in very slow printer-shares
behaviour (for example opening the properties or the spool window of a
samba-printer takes up to 30 seconds).

NT domain migration to LDAP/SAMBA
Hi,
I'm attempting to migrate an NT4 domain to Samba3, and getting quite
frustrated with stuff that seems not to work as advertised. I'd
appreciate any help.
I've set up an OpenLDAP server, and Samba 3, configured it as a BDC, and
tried running "net rpc vampire". This all works, and Samba does the
appropriate stuff to try and populate the LDAP database. The scripts

Files missing (not hidden)
Hi there,
I have a samba install on centos 5 with the latest version of samba (samba-3.0.33-3.28). There were two files that just disappeared. The users description is as below:
I had worked on them ? both were excel files that linked to each other. I saved it as a different name than the original I worked from (which I found to be very ?buggy?) ? the originals are still in their respective

Access to administrative shares on Windows
Hi people:
I'm running Samba 3.0.33 and 3.3.5 (both just for testing at different
installations) under CentOS Linux 5.5. My Samba server is configured
as PDC with an LDAP backend based on OpenLDAP+smbldaptools+gosa.
I understand this:
1. Every Windows machine has a local Administrators group.
2. When a Windows machine joins my Samba domain (named MYDOM), the

AD DNS scavenging and winbind:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)
Samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1
I have run into an issue where the DNS records added by a net ads join seem to be being scavenged. From what I understand, Windows servers/workstations check in (update their host record) on the AD DNS server on a regular basis. So the question is, how can I have samba/winbind do the same?
I could just setup a cron

Samba permissions problem, winbind auth, ldap nss
Greetings list,
I'm having a problem setting file permissions for users connecting to my
samba file server. CentOS 5.4, samba-3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1.
I have authentication configured to use winbind, and name services
configured to use LDAP.
I've configured valid users in smb.conf to contain DOMAIN\username for the
users I want to be able to connect.
They can browse the share just fine,

access times samba server via UNC access from XP
Hi,
I am experiencing performance issues when using samba as an application
server for starting exe files from my Windows XP machine.
I have a shortcut on my desktop that links to an executable via UNC path.
Startin the link takes up to 15 seconds, the second time it's a lot faster.
After starting the application and I wait for some time it seems like my
session needs to reconnect or

samba credentials file - hit and miss?
Greetings,
I'm using a CentOS 5.4 Virtual Machine and Samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4 to access a
file share from a Windows XP host. I also tried the same using a
Fedora 10 VM with
the same negative results. Please read on.
I've browsed the web and read the mount.cifs man page. And the conclusion
is the same: you connect to a share using a username and password and you're
good to to. Or,

Why are dots in username & groupname no longer allowed?
For some strange reason I am no longer able to create groupnames or
usernames (with useradd and groupadd) that contain a dot.
Uptill now it was possible to create user&groupnames like c.smith but now
I get these errors:
[root at server etc]# useradd c.smith
useradd: invalid user name 'c.smith'
[root at server1 etc]# groupadd c.smith
groupadd: c.smith is a not a valid group name

Slow browsing from Win2k and WinXP
Hi,
I have Samba 3.0.14a + OpenLDAP 2.2.24 installed on Solaris 8 as a PDC for
serving files only (no profiles, no printing). Performance of network
browsing is slow in Windows 2000 and XP, taking 10-15 seconds to open and
display the contents of a folder. The same browsing activity from a Mac
works fine with no unacceptable delays. I'm trying to sell Samba here, but
these delays are
