Shadow copy format for snapshots and Samba
Samba has a shadow_copy module to serve read-only snapshots to windows clients. I tried to use snapshotting in freebsd 5 (haven''t tried 6), but couldn''t get it stable. I''m really looking forward to getting it going on Solaris.
Anyway you can read about the format of the link here:

freezeing the ext3 filesystem
Hi,
I discovered that SGI XFS for Linux har a utility called xfs_freeze,
which freezes the filsystem and makes sure that the filesystem is
consistant. It is a bit like a mount -o remount,ro but it does not fail
when applications have open files.
When we take snapshots of our XFS volume, we do "xfs_freeze -f /mnt/foo;
lvcreate -s /dev/vg_foo/bar /dev/vg_foo/bar-snapshot;xfs_freeze -u

shadow_copy for homes share
I have successfully setup shadow_copy for normal shares on our samba
test server. However, I cannot get it working for the homes share
because of its uniqueness.
Here is the homes share:

script for VFS module shadow_copy
hello,
is someone interested in a script to manage snapshots for the VFS module
shadow_copy. I recently wrote something and maybe other people might
have some use for it. Is there any kind of script collection for samba
where I can send it?
Greetings, Christian

Apparent conflict between shadow_copy and virusfilter modules??
Hello
I'm having a problem using the virusfilter and shadow_copy2 modules which,
unless I'm mistaken, seems like a conflict between these modules. If I use
the virusfilter, acl_xattr, recycle, shadow_copy2 and full_audit modules
together, everything works perfectly, if I use the NOTHING, RENAME or
DELETE actions of the virusfilter module. If I choose to use the QUARANTINE
action for the

shadow_copy and glusterfs not working
Hello,
we are trying to configure a CTDB-Cluster with Glusterfs. We are using
Samba 4.5 together with gluster 3.9. We set up a lvm2 thin-provisioned
volume to use gluster-snapshots.
Then we configured the first share without using shadow_copy2 and
everything was working fine.
Then we added the shadow_copy2 parameters, when we did a "smbclient" we
got the following message:

Hello!
I have already reported on this behaviour at [1] and now I have checked
the same example on r-devel and the problem is still there. Thomas

RFC for new zfs replication tool
Please note: this is a "cross posting" of sorts, from a post I made;
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.unix.solaris/browse_thread/thread/a8bd4aab3918b7a0/528dacb05c970748
It was suggested that I mention it here. so I am doing so.
For convenience, here is mostly a duplicate of what I posted, with a
couple of minor updates.
Please note: I''m not asking for technical help on

getting dovecot unwedged
I'm having a problem with the dovecot server. I've upgraded to 1.0rc7
to no avail. My naive view is that a cache file is corrupt, or a lock
file cannot be unset.
Certain mailboxes cannot be accessed to read or write. Checking the
process, the server looks stuck in an infinite poll/wait loop.
telnetting directly to the
server shows that things are definately amiss, though the original

FreeBSD 4.9 RC1 (more bad news)
A few hours ago I downloaded .../i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.9-RC1-i386-disc1.iso
and made kern/mfsroot floppies from it. If I enable my ICH5R SATA
controller in "native" mode, the 4.9-RC1 GENERIC kernel hangs solidly
(only the system reset button can unwedge it) during device configuration.
The last line of bootstrap monologue written by the kernel is:

warning: NFS hangs with dovecot 2.3.8 on Debian buster
A warning to those considering to upgrade to Debian 10 (buster): we have seen occasional NFS hangs with dovecot when using the stock debian buster kernel (4.19.67-2+deb10u1).
When we downgrade to the debian stretch kernel (4.9.189-3+deb9u1), the issue does not occur. Note that we *only* downgraded the kernel, the rest of the OS is still debian buster. Dovecot 2.3.8.
A little more info: we have a
