AD DNS scavenging and winbind:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)
Samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1
I have run into an issue where the DNS records added by a net ads join seem to be being scavenged. From what I understand, Windows servers/workstations check in (update their host record) on the AD DNS server on a regular basis. So the question is, how can I have samba/winbind do the same?
I could just setup a cron

Samba permissions problem, winbind auth, ldap nss
Greetings list,
I'm having a problem setting file permissions for users connecting to my
samba file server. CentOS 5.4, samba-3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1.
I have authentication configured to use winbind, and name services
configured to use LDAP.
I've configured valid users in smb.conf to contain DOMAIN\username for the
users I want to be able to connect.
They can browse the share just fine,

access times samba server via UNC access from XP
Hi,
I am experiencing performance issues when using samba as an application
server for starting exe files from my Windows XP machine.
I have a shortcut on my desktop that links to an executable via UNC path.
Startin the link takes up to 15 seconds, the second time it's a lot faster.
After starting the application and I wait for some time it seems like my
session needs to reconnect or

FW: tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
Hi Dominic,
I wanted to wait for the original mail to pop up on the list.
But somehow it did not appear yet.
So while the problem seems to be solved meanwhile, I wanted to
comment on the relevant log portion below (see inline):

NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
Hi i'm trying to list the shares on my Brother HL-5250DN printer with the
smbtree command on linux but i keep getting the NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
error message. I can however print to one of the shared printing services with
cups through the Device URI: smb://BRN_E1BEFA/BINARY_P1. Does anyone know what
the problem could be?

Samba & (anonymous) LDAP Authentication
I am trying to things up to allow a *few* select users on a small
number of MS-Windows boxes to write to a couple of directories on a
Linux server. Most of the users on the MS-Windows boxes will only have
anonymous (guest) read-only access to one directory and anonymous
(guest) access to the printers.
The Linux server primarily is a PXEBoot and NFS server for a group of

diagnosing cause of NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME error
I'm trying to find out why I am unable to access public shares on host
mythbe (from host mythbe) due to a NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME error.
I am able to access home shares. I've checked all of the host setup
issues I know about (smb.conf, directory permissions, iptables,
selinux) but I don't see any problems. Can anyone spot a problem or
suggest where I could investigate? Below is

Let me start off by apologizing for this rambling post. I have been working on this problem all day and have not gotten anywhere.
This is my first time working with samba and I have been tasked to set up a share that does not require a password for access. I have been tinkering with the configuration file but I cannot get it to work. Here is my current smb.conf file that I have:
