Deadtime parameter questsion
Hello samba gurus !
I'm using samba 3.0.21c on AIX 5.3 box .
I've specified deadtime=15 in my smb.conf file and I'm expecting that
inactive sessions ( has no open files ) will be
closed after 15 minutes . I'm connecting to samba from my PC
( win2000 ) , minimizing the window and waiting
15 minutes ... but nothing happens - smbd opened by my connection is
still running , window

The case of the disconnecting network shares
Hi Jeremy,
No, I don't mean "deadtime". I mean auto disconnect. Specifically, the
command "net config server /autodisconnect:-1" was run on each client
machine. If deadtime is a server configuration item perhaps you could
point me in the direction of some documentation where that is covered.
The documentation for smb.conf is, to put it very mildly, incomplete.

Automatic & Permanent Disconnect of WinXP Clients
Hello,
I'd like to enable my Samba server, either by the correct choice of standard configuration parameters or by custom script, to permanently log off and disconnect WinXP clients that have been "inactive" for a specified period of time.

connection problem to W2k DC
Hi,
we are using Samba 2.2.5 in a somewhat larger configuration: a big NFS file
server and a separate box acting as a NFS/SMB gateway. Usually there are
about 200-250 connected clients. The box is a Sun Netra T1 AC200 with
Solaris 8.
Sometimes we get the following (loglevel 1):

mac os 10.5.5 and symbolic link to www
We have a new server running Red Hat 5.2EL.
Windows machines can samba to the linux server with no problems, including symbolic links to the www directory.
Our Mac OS 10.5.5 machines have a problem with symbolic links to the www directory.
On the Mac computers, the symbolic links show up as an alias that cannot be followed.
These same MAC computers can samba to the www directory via a symbolic

How does Samba handle unexpected disconnects?
Greetings,
I have been looking for infomation on how Samba handle rude
disconnects. Here is the test....
#1 - Login to Samba hosted Domain
#2 - Turn off the computer; Turn the computer back on
#3 - goto to step #1 and repeat
Now at some point my login should fail...right?
If I try the above steps, after the 5-6th power off I get 'XXXX'
Domain not found!
Questions....

Win2k disconnects mapped samba shares
Hello,
I stepped through the archives of this list, but could not find a
thread dealing with exactly this problem we are experiencing here.
Server HP-UX 10.20 Samba 2.0.6
security = domain
deadtime = 500 ... that should be enough
The win2k clients map a drive and everything is working fine.
after a period of inactivity (about half an hour) win2k somehow disconnects
the mapped drive

disconnect users after a timeout period?
We have an application that has a filed based database and we are having
a problem
with users leaving their machines running.
Instead of going and looking at like 40 some machines, is there any way
to drop them off?
or.. close the files they have open?
We need at least one machine logged in because it does processing on
this database at night,
so we cannot have all machines logged out.

XP keeps disconnecting
Maybe this has been asked many times, but I could
not find it in the list archive (in this case could
someone please address me to the right thread?)
I've an XP professional client (SP1) connected to a 2.2.7a samba
server running on a redhat 6.2 box (kernel 2.2.22).
I can log on and access samba shares, but the XP box keeps
losing these connections. Log file just tell me that:

The case of the disconnecting network shares
Hi Jeremy,
Using Samba without Windows seems rather pointless, as no other OS needs
it, nor can test it to any truly useful extent.
Thanks for point out the man page, which I've always taken as be
referring to Samba 3, not Samba 4. I can only wonder why there's a site
dedicated to Samba 4 documentation and this information isn't there.
If the default deadtime = 0 and we

deadtime/keepalive not working as expected
My expectations are probably wrong, but I had to manually kill a process
to unlock a file when I think it should have killed itself.
I have deadtime set to 15 and keepalive at default (300). I opened a file on
my server in Excel, then shut down the machine. Hours later someone
tells me the file is locked.
Shouldn't keepalive have detected that the machine was off in 5 minutes?

ZFS, iSCSI + Mac OS X Tiger (globalSAN iSCSI)
I have set up an iSCSI ZFS target that seems to connect properly from the
Microsoft Windows initiator in that I can see the volume in MMC Disk
Management.
When I shift over to Mac OS X Tiger with globalSAN iSCSI, I am able to set
up the Targets with the target name shown by `iscsitadm list target` and
when I actually connect or "Log On" I see that one connection exists on the

user accounts
I am confused on the various account creation methods in samba. I am
running Fedora Core 8 and Samba 3.0.26a-6.

I can create a user with pdbedit -a
I can create a user with smbpasswd -a
I can list the users with the pdbedit -L command
Where is the file with the users that the above commands create and
pdbedit -L lists?

no access to share after long timeout
We've got file server with samba 3.6.6 (debian 7 package) set as AD
member server. Users usually connect to it and leave their sessions
open. On the next day when they try to open any file or directory on
shares they receive message that access is denied. If I kill their
session on server they reconnect and work without problems.
As a workaround I've set parameter deadtime in smb.conf.

'deadtime' in Samba 3.0.13
Hi,
I currently have deadtime = 15 in my smb.conf. This featured worked good to
disconnect clients that have been idle for > 15 minutes in the past. With
the 3.0.13 version, it seems to do nothing. As in, it just keeps the user
connected indefinitely.
Here is what I see when no one is currently at the office and everyone is
logged off their computer.
Thanks

The case of the disconnecting network shares
We recently completed our Samba 3 to Samba 4 transition without too many
serious problems but one rather annoying issue has cropped up since the
migration. Network shares on our file server become disconnected
overnight, whether idle or not. This was never a problem with Samba 3
but since upgrading Samba on the server to version 4 and joining it to
the Samba 4 AD domain this problem is

Disconnect IMAP session after certain time?
Is it possible to have Dovecot cleanly terminate an IMAP
session after a certain time? I have a number of users
who leave their MUA (Mozilla Thunderbird) on all night,
and I'd like to have them (cleanly) disconnect in order
to free up resources after a certain "inactivity" time
(e.g. 2 hours).
Can that be done?

Samba shares becoming inactive after a while
When a user is not using a samba share, after a while they become
"inactive". When a user wants to access the share again, it takes an
irritating long time before they get access again. The (windows)
application that does the accessing is not responding during that
time. There are no drive letters assigned to the shares in a logon
script. When I do assign a drive letter to the share (in

Icecast clients disconnect at exactly 10 minutes
I am running icecast2.4.4 on a Debian VM with a python script as the source
on macOS on the same computer.
I am using a tunneling service (ngrok) to expose my localhost and listen to
the stream anywhere. I've tried other tunnels like localtunnel, but still
get disconnected at 10 minutes exactly.
When listening to my own stream on the tunnel, the client (Chrome, Firefox,
mpv) gets
