Locating the MACHINE.SID fil
Additional Info... I am beginning to think that a file called 'secrets.tdb' might be what I am looking for. Inside that file is something mentioning SID. Of course, it also mentions the name of the PDC. If that is the file I am supposed to copy over. Then it is done. However, I still need a little more input for setting up a Samba BDC. With a Samba BDC, should I leave the

Replacing Microsoft on the server side :-)
Hi all, I'm not yet a "100 % Samba Guru" and I'd very much appreciate feedback of some guru's out there regarding the following: Our team started trials with Samba 2.2.5 on Red Hat AS using OpenLDAP technologies and a LDAP backend keeping Samba's "SAM data". Ideally we want to kick out as much of Microsoft's server infrastructure as possible - means

WINDOWS Security on a share
Is it possible to use the Windows security on a Samba share which resides on a Unix server which is a MEMBER of a W2K domain ?? I am unable to make the unix server a PDC due to restrictions in the company. I have 27 users with different accesses to the same directories/files and I am trying to avoid a monster smb.conf file. I am running 2.2.5 on an HPUX 11 w/o winbind (users have unix access,

Changing expired NT password
I'm using a Linux workstation in an NT domain environment. I ran into a problem today where my NT password had expired and I could no longer use any services (e.g., Outlook). I found the domain controller host and attempted to use smbpasswd -r <host> to change the password, however it simply returned NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_EXPIRED (duh!). After trying for a couple hours to change the

Legal questions with jCIFS 0.8.2
I work for IBM and our developers have used jCIFS 0.8.2 in our product. We are now going through legal approval and have some questions. If people submit code changes to your product, do you find out if the submitter has the right to distribute the code? If so, do they need to sign any kind of statement? I couldn't find version 0.8.2 on your web site. The legal question is

Two Internet connections...
I do some occasional tech work for a cable TV/Internet service provider. They have now offered me free services, including cable Internet. I currently have a DSL service through the telephone company and, for several reasons including the fact that it is really unlimited service with no cap and it comes with newsgroup access (neither of which the cable service has), I'm not really prepared

Anyone using antivirus software?
Hello list, I was just wondering if anyone is using anti-virus software on their Samba server. I have protection on my clients, but I want to run software on the server too. I've looked at McAfee's Virus Scan, but as far as I can tell, it only uses "on-demand" scanning, meaning I have to trigger it from the command line, or run a cron job. I would like to have

Samba 3.0.25b as a domain member to a Samba PDC
I've been using Samba for about 7 years of so, but have hit a hurdle I just can't seem to figure out. I want to setup samba domain member servers to be members of a samba 3.0.25 (NT4 type) domain. No windbind, LDAP, or any other of the more complex authentication mechanism. This is the same functionality going way back to Samba 2.2, or so. In fact, I successfully did this on samba

Windows Vista password dialog keeps coming up
Hi, I have come to my wits end again (lately, it's a very short trip). I have been trying to connect to Samba 3.0.21b but Windows keeps throwing up the logon dialog. I'm using "Map network drive" to try to mount this share. It seems the problem is only on the Windows side since I have tested the connection through the Unix account. Both user id and password work fine.

Starting Samba 3.0.7 using -F -S flags
I'm attempting to start smbd and nmbd using the -F -S flags, but get the following: added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0 added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 standard input is not a socket, assuming -D option Seems that Samba is defaulting back to the -D flag. Any ideas? Thank you. Greg -- Greg J. Zartman, P.E.

Login script doesn't run
Hi, The login script has worked for our win98 computers since the dawn of time (or there abouts). Then something happened or I did something and the login script doesn't run anymore. I can run it manually. This was version 2.2.3a. I started smbd with -d10 and didn't see any call for a script. Is the login script mentioned in a working system? In an effort to fix this, I deleted and

ip phone suggestion for Asia?
Hi: i am surveying ip phones for our company. we will use them with asterisk. we have office in taiwan, hong kong, singapore and china. cisco and polycom are too expensive for us. we try several china brand ip phones. they are all cheap and some of them have good quality. but most of them won't offer future firmware support, which we think it's important for ip phones.

Login script doesn't run - Solved
I hate being stupid. Here is the answer: This won't work: [global] logon script = %U.bat # Win9x needs this This will work: [global] # Win9x needs this logon script = %U.bat The comment has to be on it's own line. Thanks to all for trying to help. Bob Crandell (bob@assuredcomp.com) wrote*: > >Hi, >The login script has worked for our win98 computers
