Performance problem with utime() on Solaris 8
To all:
While updating our Samba installation from 2.2.5 to 3.0.25b, I found that
Samba's performance was severely degraded. A 1 gig test file with random text
in it would take about 2:15 to copy using the old 2.2.5 smbd, but the same file
would take 5-6 minutes to copy with a freshly compiled version.
I ran truss on smbd while the file copy was taking place, and found that the

chmod(2) and utime(2) Problems
I am having a problem with my samba config on my web server related to
file permissions.
The problem seems quite subtle!
The samba config file contains (Samba 2.0.7):

workgroup = UKC
server string = University Web Server
security = domain
encrypt passwords = Yes
password server = KNOLE CORFE
log file = /var/adm/log/samba.log

utime and backing up files
I read in the Samba docs that there is a problem with "utime()" when
a user updates another users file the modified time cannot be updated.
According to the docs, even if it the file has write permissions set
for the non-owner.
When I attempt to do a test on a files that is mode 777, I create
the file as one user, wait a minute, edit it again as another user,
and it changes the modified

problem executing windows application in samba
Hi,
I've come across a rather strange problem while trying to execute a
windows application in samba.
I'm running Samba Version 3.0.10-Ubuntu on Linux Ubuntu, kernel
2.6.10-5-386, my full smb.conf is at the end of this message.
We have AIMS v3.0.0.3, a database application which accesses data in
.mdb files and we've stuck it on a samba share called AIMS.
The problem is, when I

Attempting to checksum a non-TCP/UDP packet, dropping a protocol 1 packet
Pasi,
in http://readlist.com/lists/lists.xensource.com/xen-users/10/50495.html
you mention a netback fix without identifying which one. In going
over the changes as well as looking at the code, I can''t spot
anything related, or see how non-TCP, non-UDP packets could
pass checksum_setup(), and hence I don''t really understand how
this problem can be considered fixed (for, in the

how many people still use NIS?
Hello listmates,
I have discovered a very strange SFTP problem which I can not connect to
anything but NIS thus far. See here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-server-73/sftp-seems-to-fail-for-nis-accounts-under-openssh-5-x-816020/
http://readlist.com/lists/suse.com/suse-linux-e/38/193419.html
Hence the question: is NIS (YP) still in use much anywhere for
authentication?
Thanks.

Problems with Excel & MS Word files (still)
Problem is apparently with locking issues, disabled oplocks in the [general]
section, and the problem actually got worse...
Here's what happens:
User-A part of group1, opens Excel file off of share, saves, exits...
User-B (or even User-A for that matter) tries to re-open same file, get
error stating it's locked and can only open for read-only access...
Both users in the same group, and

NFS performance - default rsize
Hi list,
We've had an interesting NFS performance issue with the following setup.
Clients : CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5
Server : Solaris 10 kernel Generic_142901-08
Reading a file (not cached) with dd : dd if=file1 of=/dev/null
bs=1024k count=100
performance is around.. 700 kB/s !
/proc/mounts shows rsize has been negotiated to 1mB
If we force rsize to a smaller value, 32kB, the

Xen migration fails
Hi,
I have been getting the following error (logged in /var/log/xen/xend.log)
when I try to migrate a VM from one particular host to the other (the
reverse migration works fine). My system was working fine for a long time (i
did several migrations in both the directions). I am using Xen-3.4.3
(installed from source code) with CentOS 5.4. I am using drbd to replicate
the disks.

./configure perfparse -> "configure: error: required library libgd unusable"
I recently had a problem with the configure script from perfparse running
properly so that I could 'make install' it to work with Nagios 2.10 on
latest CentOS 4.x + RPMForge (see
http://readlist.com/lists/centos.org/centos/5/28966.html). Thinking it was a
problem that was a result of "yum remove gd", I formatted the box and
reinstalled everything.
Now, oddly, I still have the

permission/acl troubles
Hi list,
Since I've upgraded from samba 3.0.23c to 3.0.25c my ACL's don't work as
expected anymore. I'm not sure where the problem is, however. The symptoms
are simple: with 3.0.23c, I could grant and revoke user, group and world
write access to and from files in a share. With 3.0.25c, I can't do that
anymore. When I deselect group or world read access and apply the
